Attacking Poverty: Is It Globalisation?… Or Is It the Institutions?

We empirically analyze the relationship between globalisation and poverty. Deviating from the mainstream literature, we use ‘synthetic’ globalisation and poverty indicators, which combine multiple single indicators into single-valued statistics. Further, we study a sample that includes OECD countries as well as non-OECD countries, which allows us to examine the effect of structural differences between countries (summarized in a OECD dummy). Our results reveal no significant effect of globalisation on poverty when correcting for the OECD effect. We argue that this suggests institutional quality as a more fundamental determinant of a country’s poverty performance than the degree of integration with the global economy. On the methodological level, our use of synthetic indicators entails a parsimonious specification of the globalisation-poverty relationship, which increases its transparency.

Décloisonnement analogique et actualisation perceptive : « À une passante » de Baudelaire

Baudelaire est l'un des premiers écrivains français à introduire des brouillages sémantiques dans le discours poétique. Aussi l'étude du sonnet « À une passante » permetelle de mieux comprendre la complexité du sens dans la poésie moderne, liée à la transformation de l'idée de subjectivité. L'article s'intéresse aux approches psychanalytiques, phénoménologiques et linguistiques, pour dégager une série de moyens par lesquels on peut parler de la subjectivité dans le langage, et au principe de l'analogie, pour dégager une autre série de moyens par lesquels Baudelaire innove dans la modernité. La présente réflexion s'inspire du postulat de la référence de Paul Ricoeur, indissociable de la lecture, qui repose sur trois critères : 1) le texte comme unité du discours 2) la tradition dans laquelle s'insère ce discours 3) et les particularités stylistiques qui permettent de comprendre l'originalité de l'oeuvre.Baudelaire was one of the first writers in France to introduce semantic obfuscation into poetic discourse.Thus, the study of the sonnet "A une passante" allows a better understanding of the complexity of sense in modern poetry, linked to the transformation of the notion of subjectivity. Using Existing Network Simulators for Power-Aware Self-Organizing Wireless Sensor Network Protocols

In this document, we compare three existing simulation platforms (OPNET Modeler, Network Simulator 2, Georgia Tech Sensor Network Simulator). Our comparative study focuses on ease of use, scalability, ease of implementing power consumption model and physical layer modeling accuracy, mainly. Conclusions of this study are presented, and will help us decide which simulating environment to use for evaluating power-aware self-organizing sensor networks protocols

Tout comme elle : L’intime et le non-dit

Bien que Louise Dupré soit connue surtout comme poète et comme romancière, son texte pour le théâtre, Tout comme elle, mis en scène par Brigitte Haentjens en 2006, a été très apprécié par le public et par la critique. L’étude du texte porte sur les marques énonciatives chargées de rendre les rapports difficiles entre une mère et sa fille, puis entre celle-ci et sa propre fille. Dans les quarante-huit scènes tirées de la vie ordinaire des trois personnages, les échanges sont lourds de non-dits hostiles : regards perdus au loin ou obliques, sentiments haineux, colères inavouées et violences contenues… L’analyse de certaines marques, subtiles et discrètes, révèle des désirs ambivalents et des confusions identitaires, qui manifestent peu à peu l’emprise qu’une mère peut exercer sur sa fille, tant par son mutisme que par les rêves et ambitions qu’elle projette sur elle. Devenue mère à son tour, la fille passe de l’admiration et de la soumission — éducation solide, bons soins maternels, profession respectable — à une plus grande distance avec sa mère, et elle constate que la dette et la culpabilité se sont transformées en colère, en mélancolie. Cela aura des effets dévastateurs sur sa relation avec sa propre fille. L’échange de rôles et le jeu de miroirs jettent un éclairage ironique sur l’ensemble et font ressortir que, pour que cesse la douleur immémoriale de la mère comme de la fille, le détachement, le renoncement à la toute-puissance et l’acquiescement à la solitude sont nécessaires. Sans recourir de façon didactique aux bons sentiments, la pièce se présente ainsi comme une forme d’hommage à l’amour particulier qui unit une mère à sa fille.Although Louise Dupré is known primarily as a poet and novelist, her text for the theatre, Tout comme elle, staged by Brigitte Haentjens in 2006, was very well received by audiences and critics. Study of the text focuses on the utterance markers that make relations difficult first between a mother and daughter, then between the daughter and her own daughter. In forty-eight scenes from the three characters’ ordinary lives, exchanges are heavy with hostile unspoken statements: sideways looks or unfocused looking into the distance, feelings of hatred, unacknowledged anger, contained violence. Analysis of subtle and discreet markers shows ambivalent desires and confusion about identity, manifesting the ascendancy a mother can have on her daughter both through her silence and through the dreams and ambitions she projects on the daughter. When the daughter becomes a mother herself, she goes from admiration and submission—solid education, good motherly care, respectable job—to greater distance from the mother, and she realizes that debt and guilt have become anger and melancholy. The effects on her relationship with her own daughter are devastating. Role exchange and mirroring shed an ironic light on the whole, indicating that in order to end the immemorial pain of both mother and daughter, they must detach, renounce omnipotence and accept solitude. Without resorting in a didactic way to pieties about proper feelings, the play presents itself as a tribute to the particular kind of love that exists between mother and daughter.Aunque Louise Dupré sea conocida sobre todo como poetisa y novelista, su texto para el teatro, titulado Tout comme elle y dirigido por Brigitte Haentjens en 2006, fue muy apreciado, tanto por el público como por la crítica. El tema estudiado en este texto tiene por objeto las marcas enunciativas encargadas de dificultar las relaciones entre una madre y su hija, y luego entre ésta y su propia hija. En las cuarenta y ocho escenas sacadas de la vida corriente de los tres personajes, los intercambios están cargados de hostilidad callada: miradas perdidas en la lejanía u oblicuas, sentimientos de odio, iras inconfesadas y violencias contenidas... El análisis de algunas marcas, sutiles y discretas, revela deseos ambivalentes y confusiones identitarias, que manifiestan poco a poco la influencia que una madre puede ejercer sobre su hija, ya sea con su mutismo o con los sueños y ambiciones que proyecta sobre ella. Tras ser a su vez madre, la hija pasa de la admiración y la sumisión –educación sólida, buenas atenciones maternas, profesión respetable– a una mayor distancia con su madre, dándose cuenta de que la deuda y la culpabilidad se han transformado en ira y en melancolía, lo cual tendrá efectos devastadores sobre su relación con su propia hija. El intercambio de papeles y el juego de espejos echan una luz irónica sobre el conjunto y hacen resaltar que, para que cese el dolor inmemorial de la madre y de la hija, son necesarios el desapego, la renuncia a la omnipotencia y la aceptación de la soledad. Understanding the limits of LoRaWAN

The quick proliferation of LPWAN networks, being LoRaWAN one of the most adopted, raised the interest of the industry, network operators and facilitated the development of novel services based on large scale and simple network structures. LoRaWAN brings the desired ubiquitous connectivity to enable most of the outdoor IoT applications and its growth and quick adoption are real proofs of that. Yet the technology has some limitations that need to be understood in order to avoid over-use of the technology. Quand un et un ne font plus deux: calcul d'échelles d'équivalence intra-familiales au moyen d'un modèle collectif

In this paper, we present a collective model with public consumption. It is based on the more general model of Lewbel, Chiappori and Browning (2001). Rather than estimating a consumption technology, which captures all economies of scale of living in a couple, we determine a priori which goods are privately and which goods are publicly consumed. The collective model is completely identified by assuming that preferences over private and public goods are the same for singles and individuals in couples. The model allows calculating intra-household based equivalence scales, which meet the objections against traditional equivalence scales. It is applied to consumption data from a recent Belgian budget survey.collective household models; household bargaining; intrahousehold allocation; consumption; public goods
