Machine Learning for Set-Identified Linear Models

This paper provides estimation and inference methods for an identified set where the selection among a very large number of covariates is based on modern machine learning tools. I characterize the boundary of the identified set (i.e., support function) using a semiparametric moment condition. Combining Neyman-orthogonality and sample splitting ideas, I construct a root-N consistent, uniformly asymptotically Gaussian estimator of the support function and propose a weighted bootstrap procedure to conduct inference about the identified set. I provide a general method to construct a Neyman-orthogonal moment condition for the support function. Applying my method to Lee (2008)'s endogenous selection model, I provide the asymptotic theory for the sharp (i.e., the tightest possible) bounds on the Average Treatment Effect in the presence of high-dimensional covariates. Furthermore, I relax the conventional monotonicity assumption and allow the sign of the treatment effect on the selection (e.g., employment) to be determined by covariates. Using JobCorps data set with very rich baseline characteristics, I substantially tighten the bounds on the JobCorps effect on wages under weakened monotonicity assumption

80 patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) were examined. The diagnosis of GERD was based on the history of the disease, complaints of patients, the results of daily monitoring of pH in the lower third of the esophagus, data of fibroesophagogastroduodenoscopy, chromoendoscopy, 13C-octanoic breath test, gastrin-17 (G-17) concentration, pepsinogens I and II (P I and II) and cholecystokinin-pancreozymin (C-P) in serum. After 24 hours pH monitoring of the lower third of the esophagus in 40 patients with GERD, the predominance of acid was found, and the other 40 patients had mixed refluxes. In patients with predominance of acid reflux, the mean values of half-life of solid food evaluation (T1/2) according to 13C-octanoic breath test was (45.25±1.34) min. With the predominance of mixed refluxes in patients, there was a tendency towards hypokinetic motility of the stomach, indicating a slowdown in half-life of solid food evaluation from the stomach up to (139.24±11.87) min. With the predominance of acid reflux also was observed a significant reduction in the concentration of G-17 and C-P, an increase in P I and a decrease in the concentration of P II. Hypergastrinemia, high levels of C-P and P II (37.44±3.41) μg/l (p<0,05) were diagnosed with the predominance of mixed refluxes

Assessment of Risk Factors of Septic Complications of the Puerperium

Postpartum purulent-septic complications (PPSC) and their problems are most urgent for modern obstetrics due to their significant frequency. Maternal sepsis is one of the leading causes of maternal mortality around the world, accounting for about one-tenth of the global number of maternal deaths. Understanding the risk factors for the development of septic complications of puerperium is important for preventive strategies.Aim. To study the possibility of forming high-risk groups on the basis of analysis of anamnestic data and the course of puerperium in women with PPSC as part of the preventive measures for the development of such complications.Materials and methods. The first stage of the study involves a retrospective analysis for the allocation of risk factors for the development of PPSC in women, who underwent inpatient treatment for this pathology - main group (n=108); сontrol group (n=35) – parous with uncomplicated flow of the postpartum period. Prospective research enrolled 65 pregnant women with extragenital pathology and/or complicated pregnancy (group 1); 30 pregnant women without severe concomitant somatic pathology with physiological course of pregnancy (group 2). The following were taken into account: age, obstetrical and gynecological history, extragenital pathology, laboratory diagnostic data. Differences in mean values were considered significant with a probability level of at least 95 % (p<0.05).Results. To the risk factors for the development of PPSC, we classified as follows: gynecological diseases in history: menstrual dysfunction, chronic inflammatory diseases of the genital organs, bacterial vaginosis; complications of pregnancy and labor: preeclampsia, preterm labor, premature rupture of membranes, long anhydrous span, chorioamnionitis, weakness of labor, genital tract ruptures, placental attachment pathology, operative vaginal birth, bleeding; concomitant extragenital pathology: diabetes, obesity, diseases of the urinary system, diseases of the cardiovascular system, respiratory diseases, varicose disease, anemia.Conclusions. The connection between the presence of concomitant somatic pathology, the complicated course of pregnancy and labor and the subsequent development of septic complications in the postpartum period have been established. Prediction of the risk of their occurrence at the stage of pregraviditic preparation, with various complications of pregnancy and childbirth, especially in women with extragenital pathology, differential prevention will reduce the frequency of PPSC

    Get PDF
The tasks to be carried out during the three-year project period are: (1) performing extensive simulation using existing mathematical models to build a specific knowledge base of the operating characteristics of space power systems; (2) carrying out the necessary basic research on hierarchical control structures, real-time quantitative algorithms, and decision-theoretic procedures; (3) developing a two-level automation scheme for fault detection and diagnosis, maintenance and restoration scheduling, and load management; and (4) testing and demonstration. The outlines of the proposed system structure that served as a master plan for this project, work accomplished, concluding remarks, and ideas for future work are also addressed

Estimation and Inference about Heterogeneous Treatment Effects in High-Dimensional Dynamic Panels

This paper provides estimation and inference methods for a large number of heterogeneous treatment effects in a panel data setting with many potential controls. We assume that heterogeneous treatment is the result of a low-dimensional base treatment interacting with many heterogeneity-relevant controls, but only a small number of these interactions have a non-zero heterogeneous effect relative to the average. The method has two stages. First, we use modern machine learning techniques to estimate the expectation functions of the outcome and base treatment given controls and take the residuals of each variable. Second, we estimate the treatment effect by l1-regularized regression (i.e., Lasso) of the outcome residuals on the base treatment residuals interacted with the controls. We debias this estimator to conduct pointwise inference about a single coefficient of treatment effect vector and simultaneous inference about the whole vector. To account for the unobserved unit effects inherent in panel data, we use an extension of correlated random effects approach of Mundlak (1978) and Chamberlain (1982) to a high-dimensional setting. As an empirical application, we estimate a large number of heterogeneous demand elasticities based on a novel dataset from a major European food distributor

Fulfillment of Maternal Health As Part of Human Rights: A Case Study of Banyuwangi Municipality of East Java, Indonesia

    Get PDF
This article is result of research on the fulfillment of maternal health which conducted in one of city in East Java Indonesia. Approach used for this research is human rights based which also utilise 3-A and 1-Q elements (availability, accessibility, acceptability, and quality) and SPO scheme (Structure, Process, Outcome). Both of these elements and schemes are used to identify the level of fulfilment the State has achieved, because fulfilment of right to health covers not only on the availability of the service and facilities but also on the accessibility, acceptability of the local communities, and quality of the service. There are nine issues within maternal health rights which study in this research: early marriage and early pregnancy; family planning; pregnancy; childbirth; postnatal; abortion; violence against women; STIs and HIV-AIDS and knowledge on reproductive organ. All of these issues considered as basic issue for women in protecting their sexual and reproductive health rights
