Keeping the Heart: Contemporizing the Parables of Jesus

    Get PDF
One of the main teaching techniques of Jesus was his usage of stories, also known as parables. Although the power of his words never fades, the impact of the details of his stories inevitably gets lost when the stories are read in a different cultural context. This thesis provides a method that brings Jesus’s parables into a modern context. In being able to completely transform parables into a modern context, the message of the parables can reach wider audiences on a more personal level. The goal is to revive the heart of storytelling within the parables of Jesus and communicate the same truth centuries after they were originally shared

Low dielectric fluorinated poly(phenylene ether ketone) film and coating

    Get PDF
The present invention relates to film and coating materials prepared from novel fluorinated poly(phenylene ether ketones). A fluorinated poly(phenylene ether ketone) is prepared by reacting a bisphenol with 1,1,1,3,3,3 hexafluoro-2,2-bis 4-(4-halobenzoyl) phenyl propane (wherein halo is fluoro or chloro), which is a novel monomer formed as the reaction product of halobenzene (wherein halo is fluoro or chloro) and 1,1,1,3,3,3 hexafluoro-2,2-bis (p-chloro formyl phenyl) propane. Especially beneficial results of this invention are that films and coating materials prepared from the novel fluorinated poly(phenylene ether ketone) are essentially optically transparent/colorless and have a lower dielectric constant than otherwise comparable, commercially available poly(phenylene ether ketones). Moreover, unlike the otherwise comparable commercially available materials, the novel fluorinated poly(phenylene ether ketones) of the present invention can be solution cast or sprayed to produce the films and coatings. Furthermore, the long term thermal stability of the polymers of the present invention is superior to that of the commercially available materials

Implementation Failure of Truancy Statutes in the Fourth Judicial Circuit of Florida: A Case Study in Street-Level Bureaucracy

    Get PDF
This research utilizes the case study method to examine the effectiveness of truancy statutes recently implemented in Florida\u27s Fourth Judicial Circuit prior to the 1999-2000 school year. The statutes were implemented state wide, but this study concentrates on the Fourth Judicial Circuit. The Fourth Judicial Circuit in Northeast Florida consists of Duval, Clay, and Nassau Counties. The legislation examined requires individual schools to conduct an initial truancy intervention when a student has accumulated 5 unexcused absences in a calendar month or 10 unexcused absences in any 90-day period. An exploratory case study was conducted that consisted of interviews with school attendance social workers, data collection from the Truancy Arbitration Program run from the State Attorney\u27s Office in each county, and state wide attendance data. An additional Program in the Duval County State Attorney\u27s Office was also studied. Data for three school years, one before the new statutes and two after, were analyzed to see if the implementation of these statutes was successful. The study concludes that the implementation of these new statutes by the schools in the Fourth Judicial Circuit has been a failure. This research demonstrates that the schools are conducting a fraction of the required interventions to students in need and therefore other intervention programs have had a reduction in referrals since the initial intervention in not taking place. Finally, the research also discovered that there seems to be a bias in the handling of truant females, already well documented in other jurisdictions

The Relationships of Learning Style Balance and Learning Dimensions to Self-Directed Learning Propensity Among Adult Learners

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships of learning style characteristics to self-directed learning propensity among adult learners. The learning style characteristics investigated were learning style balance as measured by a scoring method developed by Mainemelis, Boyatzis, and Kolb (2002) and learning style dimensions as measured by the Kolb Learning Style Inventory (LSI). The Oddi Continuous Learning Instrument (OCLI) was used to measure self-directed learning propensity. A questionnaire was used to collect descriptive information about the participants for age, gender, years of professional work experience, and graduate degree program in the categories of business, education, health, and other. The subjects were adult graduate students enrolled in a public, comprehensive university in the southeastern United States. Pearson product moment correlations at the .05 significance level were used to analyze the data. The findings in this study indicate that learning style balance is not significantly related to self-directed learning propensity. However, self-directed learning propensity was found to be significantly related to the transformation learning dimension (activereflective) in the direction of the reflective mode. No significant relationship was found between the prehension learning dimension (abstract-concrete) and self-directed learning. An ancillary finding was that age and gender were significantly related to self-directed learning. Females and respondents in the age category 46-55 scored significantly higher on the OCLI than did males and respondents in three other age groups

The role of ERTS in the establishment and of a nationwide land cover information system

    Get PDF
The economic potential of utilizing an ERTS type satellite in the development, updating, and maintenance of a nation-wide land cover information system in the post-1977 time frame was examined. Several alternative acquisition systems were evaluated for land cover data acquisition, processing, and interpretation costs in order to determine, on a total life cycle cost basis, under which conditions of user demand (i.e., area of coverage, frequency of coverage, timeliness of information, and level of information detail) an ERTS type satellite would be cost effective, and what the annual cost savings benefits would be. It was concluded that a three satellite system with high and low altitude aircraft and ground survey team utilizing automatic interpretation and classification techniques is an economically sound proposal

Attitudes, Norms, and Behavioral Control Factors Associated with Intention to Receive Cervical Cancer Screening in Hispanic Americans

    Get PDF
Cervical cancer screening rates are significantly lower in Hispanic Americans than non-Hispanic Americans. This may lead to thousands of unnecessary deaths per year. The current study sought to understand cervical cancer screening intentions among Hispanic Americans using the Theory of Planned Behavior. 149 Hispanic American women (100 English-speaking and 49 Spanish-speaking) were recruited via Amazon Turk to complete a cross-sectional survey measuring attitudes (medical embarrassment), subjective norms (marianismo beliefs and acculturation), and perceived behavioral control (self-efficacy and health literacy). Hierarchical regression was used to determine the individual and collective influence of these variables on cervical cancer screening intentions. Results differed based on the language of the sample. Country of origin and beliefs in being a pillar for the family were significant predictors of intentions in the English-speaking sample, while beliefs in being virtuous and chaste were significant in the Spanish-speaking sample. In both samples, self-efficacy was a significant predictor of cervical cancer screening intentions Future interventions to increase screening in this population should focus on strengthening self-efficacy concerning cervical cancer screening. Additionally, differences in predictors based on spoken language should be taken into account when encouraging women to obtain screening

Linking the Undergraduate Degree to the Graduate Degree: Core Curriculum Issues

    Get PDF
There are many issues that relate to the efficacy of the undergraduate degree in the field of communicative disorders. Some have advocated for the elimination of the degree while others vigorously fight to maintain it. Some believe that there should be clinic associated with the undergraduate degree while others argue to have the degree but without clinic. Some state departments of education allow persons with an undergraduate degree in communicative disorders to practice in the schools, others do not. Colleges and universities are afraid that without an undergraduate degree program, their departments will be seen as vulnerable to elimination in the academy. Other colleges and universities want to close their undergraduate programs to concentrate on their master\u27s and doctoral degrees, especially because of the shortage of doctoral level faculty to adequately staff all their programs. All of these issues and many more play into the debate about the continuation of the undergraduate degree in the field of communicative disorders. Today you are going to hear from three members of the Council who have very different viewpoints on the issue. We hope to stimulate discussion that will be productive in helping you and your departments determine the efficacy of your undergraduate degree in the fiel
