Assessing Motives for Consensual Sex: Development of the Sexual Motives Questionnaire

    Get PDF
The present study describes the development and preliminary validation of the Sexual Motives Questionnaire (SMQ), a measure of motives for consensual sex. The measure is informed two dispositional theories, functional theory and self-construal theories, which suggest that individuals are motivated to engage in behavior due to approach/avoidance and independent/interdependent tendencies, respectively. Items were also selected to reflect sexual scripts and fear of sexual and physical violence. A total of 81 items was administered to 920 undergraduates. Exploratory factor analysis was conducted utilizing the 821 participants with complete data. The final sample was predominately heterosexual (96%) and Caucasian (83%) with a mean age of 19.27 (SD = 3.07). About half of participants were female. A 6 factor structure was obtained consisting of 2 approach factors (Relational and Pleasure) and 4 avoidance factors (Appease-partner, Prevent-harm, Reassure-self, and Reputation). Generally, the SMQ demonstrated convergent and discriminant validity consistent with expectations. Confirmatory factor analysis is needed to further validate the SMQ. However, preliminary data suggests that this measure has the potential to examine the relation between sexual motives and sexual health and functioning, and the impact of sexual victimization on these domains

Sexual coercion, the use of manipulative tactics to have sexual contact with another person against their will, is experienced frequently by women in dating relationships. Cross sectional data suggests this type of experience is associated with deleterious outcomes for women’s mental health and relationship satisfaction. To date, no published studies have examined how sexual coercion relates to women’s well-being and relationship functioning on a daily basis or their satisfaction with dating relationships over time. The present study measured the frequency of 4 sexual coercion tactics (i.e., arousal, verbal, intoxication and force) and their association with women’s wellbeing and relationship functioning using daily diary and longitudinal methods. Data were collected from 137 undergraduate women who were at least 18 years of age and in a dating relationship with a man. At baseline, participants completed in-person surveys assessing demographics, sexual victimization history, sexual coercion by the current partner, and relationship satisfaction. For the next 2 weeks participants responded to daily internet surveys on sexual coercion, affect, and relationship satisfaction. One month after the last daily survey participants completed a follow-up online survey. Sixty-three percent of women reported sexual coercion at some point in their relationship. On days when women reported partner use of verbal and intoxication tactics they reported increased conflict and decreased positive affect, respectively. Arousal and force tactics were unrelated to daily measures. Frequency of verbal, intoxication and force tactics, but not arousal tactics, reported at follow-up were associated with increased relationship conflict. No coercive tactics were related to relationship support or depth over time

Chemical heterogeneities in the mantle: progress towards a general quantitative description

Abstract. Chemical equilibration between two different assemblages (peridotite type and gabbro–eclogite type) has been determined using basic thermodynamic principles and certain constraints and assumptions regarding mass and reaction exchange. When the whole system (defined by the sum of the two subsystems) is in chemical equilibrium the two assemblages will not be homogenized, but they will preserve distinctive chemical and mineralogical differences. Furthermore, the mass transfer between the two subsystems defines two petrological assemblages that separately are also in local thermodynamic equilibrium. In addition, when two assemblages previously equilibrated as a whole in a certain initial mass ratio are held together assuming a different proportion, no mass transfer occurs and the two subsystems remain unmodified. By modeling the chemical equilibration results of several systems of variable initial size and different initial composition it is possible to provide a quantitative framework to determine the chemical and petrological evolution of two assemblages from an initial state, in which the two are separately in chemical equilibrium, to a state of equilibration of the whole system. Assuming that the local Gibbs energy variation follows a simple transport model with an energy source at the interface, a complete petrological description of the two systems can be determined over time and space. Since there are no data to constrain the kinetics of the processes involved, the temporal and spatial scale is arbitrary. The evolution model should be considered only a semiempirical tool that shows how the initial assemblages evolve while preserving distinct chemical and petrological features. Nevertheless, despite the necessary simplification, a 1-D model illustrates how chemical equilibration is controlled by the size of the two subsystems. By increasing the initial size of the first assemblage (peridotite like), the compositional differences between the initial and the final equilibrated stage become smaller, while on the eclogite-type side the differences tend to be larger. A simplified 2-D dynamic model in which one of the two subsystems is allowed to move with a prescribed velocity shows that after an initial transient state, the moving subsystem tends to preserve its original composition defined at the influx side. The composition of the static subsystem instead progressively diverges from the composition defining the starting assemblage. The observation appears to be consistent for various initial proportions of the two assemblages, which somehow simplify the development of potential tools for predicting the chemical equilibration process from real data and geodynamic applications. Four animation files and the data files of three 1-D and two 2-D numerical models are available following the instructions in the Supplement

The McGillicuddy fellowship showcase: An annual opportunity for enlightenment

Michael Socolow, director of the Clement and Linda McGillicuddy Humanities Center, and Karen Sieber, a humanities specialist at the center, were excited to introduce this year’s four McGillicuddy’s students. While their research differed in topics, students Hailey Cedor, Nola Prevost, Nolan Altvater and Katherine Reardon all had the same idea of sharing the truth in mind. The truths that these four students have spent the past year chasing range from the retelling of family history to reparations for the Holocaust from the influence of men in fairytales to the treatment of Wabanaki people — both in the past and present

The principal goal of this study is to understand which is the association between a therapeutic alliance’s evaluation from the observer’s point of view and the therapist’s own. The System for Observing Family Therapy Alliances (SOFTA - Friedlander, Escudero, & Heatherington, 2006) is used to evaluate the strength of the therapeutic alliance. The SOFTA-o is used for the observational sample and the SOFTA-s is used for the self-report sample, the 1st session being the basis for analysis. The results show that there is a low association between these two assessment methods. The therapist’s actions don’t seem to be congruent with his or her perceptions. The frequencies’ analysis of comportamental descriptors shows that therapists contribute more to the dimensions Engagement and Emotional Connection than for Safety and Shared Purpose. The specific dimensions of family and couple therapy are those to which the therapists least contribute. These results may be useful for therapists’ training and a better clinical practice, indicating the dimensions to which therapists should give more attention

Problem One million hospitalized people fall annually in the United States, and up to a third are preventable. Context Data from an acute care hospital show one medical-surgical unit reported eight patient falls in 2021, two causing major harm that reached sentinel event criteria. Interventions A Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) leveraged the unique CNL skill set and characteristics of Human-Centered Leadership to engage in horizontal leadership, injury prevention, and team coordination through authentic human connection. The team leveraged documentation for improved fall risk communication. Unavoidable disruptions hindered other planned interventions. Measures Outcome measures observe for total fall count and the rate of falls with injury. Three balancing measures monitor for patient mobility, physical restraints, and employee injuries during the effort to reduce patient falls. Results Since January 2022 (i.e., six months), the unit has had zero injury falls and achieved eighty-nine consecutive days without a patient fall. The total fall count is constant at both the unit and hospital levels; however, there is a shift in fall severity. There have been no moderate-harm, major-harm, or sentinel event patient falls since the onset of this quality improvement process. The balancing measures are all favorable. Conclusions Increased awareness and focus on fall prevention positively affected safety culture and reduced patient harm. Outcomes endorse leveraging the expertise of the CNL and Human-Centered Leader, inviting participation in change by engaged teams, and a little luck to avoid disruptions at critical times in the project lifespan. Applied interventions are generalizable to other interprofessional teams

Todos os fatores determinantes em análise apresentam um impacto diferente no processo de decisão de compra, variando de comprador para comprador.Nowadays, buyers are looking for ecological housecleaning products as an alternative to conventional options made of harsh chemicals that harm their personal health and the environment. This study aims to analyse in detail the individual relevance of different determinants that influence the purchase of ecological housecleaning products. For this purpose and to gain the adequate knowledge, a qualitative study was made to ecological housecleaning product buyers, using semi-structured in-depth interviews and consumption biographies. The results suggest that the ecological housecleaning product purchase is based on determinants that are evaluated differently by each individual buyer forming a complex decision process.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Longitudinal analysis of behavior patterns in a captive chimpanzee population

    Get PDF
Data collected over an 11 year period were analyzed for behavioral constancy, reaction to environmental change, and the differential influence of environment and genetics in a group of captive chimpanzees using the framework of the Five Factor Model of Personality. Results suggested environment was a more influential factor in behavioral production, although expected reactions of specific individuals were not evidenced. Improvements upon this research include use of a more chimpanzee-specific personality model and more detailed data collection to support more precise conclusions regarding behavioral etiology
