HiPart: Hierarchical Divisive Clustering Toolbox
This paper presents the HiPart package, an open-source native python library
that provides efficient and interpret-able implementations of divisive
hierarchical clustering algorithms. HiPart supports interactive visualizations
for the manipulation of the execution steps allowing the direct intervention of
the clustering outcome. This package is highly suited for Big Data applications
as the focus has been given to the computational efficiency of the implemented
clustering methodologies. The dependencies used are either Python build-in
packages or highly maintained stable external packages. The software is
provided under the MIT license. The package's source code and documentation can
be found at https://github.com/panagiotisanagnostou/HiPart
Minimum Density Hyperplanes
Associating distinct groups of objects (clusters) with contiguous regions of
high probability density (high-density clusters), is central to many
statistical and machine learning approaches to the classification of unlabelled
data. We propose a novel hyperplane classifier for clustering and
semi-supervised classification which is motivated by this objective. The
proposed minimum density hyperplane minimises the integral of the empirical
probability density function along it, thereby avoiding intersection with high
density clusters. We show that the minimum density and the maximum margin
hyperplanes are asymptotically equivalent, thus linking this approach to
maximum margin clustering and semi-supervised support vector classifiers. We
propose a projection pursuit formulation of the associated optimisation problem
which allows us to find minimum density hyperplanes efficiently in practice,
and evaluate its performance on a range of benchmark datasets. The proposed
approach is found to be very competitive with state of the art methods for
clustering and semi-supervised classification

Backround: Carriage of XDR or PDR (extensively / multidrug-resistant drug-resistan) Gram Negatives serves as an important reservoir for horizontal dissemination in health – care facilities and as a source for subsequent clinical infection in carriers. The aim of this study was to describe the natural history of colonization by XDR or PDR in patients dischared to a rehabilitation center.
Clinical importance: future strategies, indication of antibacterial treatment
Methods: Patients were screened by rectal swabs, urine, tracheal aspirate or decubitus ulcer/wound cultures on selective plates (CHROM agar KPC) for XDR/PDR Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumannii and Klebsiella pneumonia at admission. Removed isolates were submitted to identification and susceptibility testing. Patients were assigned to one of the following groups: Group A, those colonized by any of the above, were cohorted and placed on strict contact isolation precautions; Group B, those not colonized and Group C, those hose cultures results were pending. Patients in the latter group were re-assigned to either Group A or B, depending on culture results. Patients in Surveillance culture were performed every 15 days for patients in Group B and every 2 months and 3 days before discharge in Group A. Patients who became colonized during their stay, were re-assigned to Group A and were transferred to dedicated groups. Those initially colonized who had 3 consecutive negative cultures were re-assigned to Group B and were relocated to other rooms.
Results: A total 380 patients have been included in our study and 139 of them (37%) were colonized with XDR/PDR isolate while 241 (63%) were not. From those patients that they were screened before discharge (Ν=266) 109 (41%) were colonized. 37 patients were clear of colonization after a mean duration of stay 2,5±1 months
Conclusions: A significant proportion of patients admitted to a rehabilitation center in Greece were colonized with XDR/PDR bacteria. ‘’Clearene’’ of colonization without any intervention is uncommon and it may occur after prolonged period of time. Screening and isolation precaution measures are of paramount importance for the prevention of dissemination of these pathogenes in rehabilitation centers
Real Time Sentiment Change Detection of Twitter Data Streams
In the past few years, there has been a huge growth in Twitter sentiment
analysis having already provided a fair amount of research on sentiment
detection of public opinion among Twitter users. Given the fact that Twitter
messages are generated constantly with dizzying rates, a huge volume of
streaming data is created, thus there is an imperative need for accurate
methods for knowledge discovery and mining of this information. Although there
exists a plethora of twitter sentiment analysis methods in the recent
literature, the researchers have shifted to real-time sentiment identification
on twitter streaming data, as expected. A major challenge is to deal with the
Big Data challenges arising in Twitter streaming applications concerning both
Volume and Velocity. Under this perspective, in this paper, a methodological
approach based on open source tools is provided for real-time detection of
changes in sentiment that is ultra efficient with respect to both memory
consumption and computational cost. This is achieved by iteratively collecting
tweets in real time and discarding them immediately after their process. For
this purpose, we employ the Lexicon approach for sentiment characterizations,
while change detection is achieved through appropriate control charts that do
not require historical information. We believe that the proposed methodology
provides the trigger for a potential large-scale monitoring of threads in an
attempt to discover fake news spread or propaganda efforts in their early
stages. Our experimental real-time analysis based on a recent hashtag provides
evidence that the proposed approach can detect meaningful sentiment changes
across a hashtags lifetime
