This paper discusses the concept of gender in Islam. By using the normative approach through text analysis of Qur'anic and Hadith theology, gender in Islam highly upholds the value of justice regardless of gender. In the Qur'an are found several verses that become supporters and amplifiers that imply a difference, and each has a privilege. However, no verse has been found that describes such distinctions and differences. Thus, Islam has never taught the existence of differences between men and women because it really distinguishes only the level of piety of the Creator

Dasar-dasar dan Ruang Lingkup Evaluasi Pendidikan

Evaluation must be implemented systematically and continuously in order to describe the ability of the students. The main mistakes that often occur among teachers is that evaluation is carried out at certain moments, such as at the end of the unit, middle, and end of a teaching program. As a result of that is the lack of information about the students, causing many teachers prediction is biased in determining their position in class activities. Evaluation should not only be concidered as a collection of techniques but also rather a process that is based on principles. What should be assessed always gives priority in the process of evaluation. The interesting problem that is discussed in this paper is about the basics and the scope of educational evaluation

I am privileged to have the opportunity to speak to this august audience of distinguished development economists very briefly, on what I have called the ‘Triad of Governance, Devolution and National Prosperity’. This, triad, I believe, lies at the heart of what constitutes the theme of this conference, namely ‘Institutional Change, Growth and Poverty’. The National Reconstruction Bureau which I was privileged to create and lead for all the three years of General Musharraf’s tenure as Chief Executive of Pakistan, was meant to transtate into reality the vision we crystallised for addressing the persistent failure of the institutions of state to provide solutions to the ever growing political, administrative, financial, judicial and social problems that the people of Pakistan faced since independence. The vision was ‘Reconstruction of the Institutions of State for Establishing Genuine and Sustainable Democracy to ensure Durable Good Governance for an Irreversible Transfer of Power to the People of Pakistan as soon as possible’. I will first give you a fleeting birds eye view of the wide spectrum over which our National Reconstruction endeavour in pursuit of this vision was spread. In the second part of this talk, which will contain the core of what I want to put across today, I will talk about financial devolution of the state. The third part of my talk will deal briefly with the burning issue of what we should do for turning our common citizens’ poverty into prosperity

Vision Based Extraction of Nutrition Information from Skewed Nutrition Labels

An important component of a healthy diet is the comprehension and retention of nutritional information and understanding of how different food items and nutritional constituents affect our bodies. In the U.S. and many other countries, nutritional information is primarily conveyed to consumers through nutrition labels (NLs) which can be found in all packaged food products. However, sometimes it becomes really challenging to utilize all this information available in these NLs even for consumers who are health conscious as they might not be familiar with nutritional terms or find it difficult to integrate nutritional data collection into their daily activities due to lack of time, motivation, or training. So it is essential to automate this data collection and interpretation process by integrating Computer Vision based algorithms to extract nutritional information from NLs because it improves the user’s ability to engage in continuous nutritional data collection and analysis. To make nutritional data collection more manageable and enjoyable for the users, we present a Proactive NUTrition Management System (PNUTS). PNUTS seeks to shift current research and clinical practices in nutrition management toward persuasion, automated nutritional information processing, and context-sensitive nutrition decision support. PNUTS consists of two modules, firstly a barcode scanning module which runs on smart phones and is capable of vision-based localization of One Dimensional (1D) Universal Product Code (UPC) and International Article Number (EAN) barcodes with relaxed pitch, roll, and yaw camera alignment constraints. The algorithm localizes barcodes in images by computing Dominant Orientations of Gradients (DOGs) of image segments and grouping smaller segments with similar DOGs into larger connected components. Connected components that pass given morphological criteria are marked as potential barcodes. The algorithm is implemented in a distributed, cloud-based system. The system’s front end is a smartphone application that runs on Android smartphones with Android 4.2 or higher. The system’s back end is deployed on a five node Linux cluster where images are processed. The algorithm was evaluated on a corpus of 7,545 images extracted from 506 videos of bags, bottles, boxes, and cans in a supermarket. The DOG algorithm was coupled to our in-place scanner for 1D UPC and EAN barcodes. The scanner receives from the DOG algorithm the rectangular planar dimensions of a connected component and the component’s dominant gradient orientation angle referred to as the skew angle. The scanner draws several scan lines at that skew angle within the component to recognize the barcode in place without any rotations. The scanner coupled to the localizer was tested on the same corpus of 7,545 images. Laboratory experiments indicate that the system can localize and scan barcodes of any orientation in the yaw plane, of up to 73.28 degrees in the pitch plane, and of up to 55.5 degrees in the roll plane. The videos have been made public for all interested research communities to replicate our findings or to use them in their own research. The front end Android application is available for free download at Google Play under the title of NutriGlass. This module is also coupled to a comprehensive NL database from which nutritional information can be retrieved on demand. Currently our NL database consists of more than 230,000 products. The second module of PNUTS is an algorithm whose objective is to determine the text skew angle of an NL image without constraining the angle’s magnitude. The horizontal, vertical, and diagonal matrices of the (Two Dimensional) 2D Haar Wavelet Transform are used to identify 2D points with significant intensity changes. The set of points is bounded with a minimum area rectangle whose rotation angle is the text’s skew. The algorithm’s performance is compared with the performance of five text skew detection algorithms on 1001 U.S. nutrition label images and 2200 single- and multi-column document images in multiple languages. To ensure the reproducibility of the reported results, the source code of the algorithm and the image data have been made publicly available. If the skew angle is estimated correctly, optical character recognition (OCR) techniques can be used to extract nutrition information

Development of Preclinical Magnetic Resonance Imaging Relational Database and Interactive Analytical Tool for Diffusion Tensor Imaging

Databases have become an essential component for any organization to collect and manage the information. Similar to other domains, by implementing a database management system (DBMS), data storage, access, analysis and updates can be automated and optimized in the biological, medical and preclinical research areas. This work demonstrated the development of a preclinical database, which contains the processed results from different magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques with relevant biological information. In addition, we designed and implemented an interactive analytical tool to format and analyze diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data and automatically generate results in the forms of box plot, bar plot, line plot with statistical summary. The performance of the newly built analytical tool was tested to determine the accuracy and robustness by following functional-unit test procedures. Microsoft SQL Server 2016 Express edition was used to develop the database, and an open source programming language R was used to develop the interactive analytical tool. Results showed that implementation of DBMS and the interactive analytical tool has drastically reduced data analysis time. While the conventional analytical method required more than three days to format, process, analyze and produce results from one study dataset, the DTI analytical tool returned the same results within 10 minutes. This database and the accompanying tool will be very effective for enhancing the speed of data analysis of diffusion tensor imaging data

A variety of chemicals in the environment have the potential to adversely affect the biological systems. We examined the responses of Rat (Rattus norvegicus) to the RDX exposure and female fathead minnows (FHM, Pimephales promelas) to a model aromatase inhibitor, fadrozole, using a transcriptional network inference approach. Rats were exposed to RDX and fish were exposed to 0 or 30mg/L fadrozole for 8 days. We analyzed gene expression changes using 8000 probes microarrays for rat experiment and 15,000 probe microarrays for fish. We used these changes to infer a transcriptional network. The central nervous system is remarkably plastic in its ability to recover from trauma. We examined recovery from chemicals in rats and fish through changes in transcriptional networks. Transcriptional networks from time series experiments provide a good basis for organizing and studying the dynamic behavior of biological processes. The goal of this work was to identify networks affected by chemical exposure and track changes in these networks as animals recover. The top 1254 significantly changed genes based upon 1.5-fold change and P\u3c 0.05 across all the time points from the fish data and 937 significantly changed genes from rat data were chosen for network modeling using either a Mutual Information network (MIN) or a Graphical Gaussian Model (GGM) or a Dynamic Bayesian Network (DBN) approach. The top interacting genes were queried to find sub-networks, possible biological networks, biochemical pathways, and network topologies impacted after exposure to fadrozole. The methods were able to reconstruct transcriptional networks with few hub structures, some of which were found to be involved in major biological process and molecular function. The resulting network from rat experiment exhibited a clear hub (central in terms of connections and direction) connectivity structure. Genes such as Ania-7, Hnrpdl, Alad, Gapdh, etc. (all CNS related), GAT-2, Gabra6, Gabbrl, Gabbr2 (GABA, neurotransmitter transporters and receptors), SLC2A1 (glucose transporter), NCX3 (Na-Ca exchanger), Gnal (Olfactory related), skn-la were showed up in our network as the \u27hub\u27 genes while some of the known transcription factors Msx3, Cacngl, Brs3, NGF1 etc. were also matched with our network model. Aromatase in the fish experiment was a highly connected gene in a sub-network along with other genes involved in steroidogenesis. Many of the sub-networks were involved in fatty acid metabolism, gamma-hexachlorocyclohexane degradation, and phospholipase activating pathways. Aromatase was a highly connected gene in a sub-network along with the genes LDLR, StAR, KRT18, HER1, CEBPB, ESR2A, and ACVRL1. Many of the subnetworks were involved in fatty acid metabolism, gamma-hexachlorocyclohexane degradation, and phospholipase activating pathways. A credible transcriptional network was recovered from both the time series data and the static data. The network included transcription factors and genes with roles in brain function, neurotransmission and sex hormone synthesis. Examination of the dynamic changes in expression within this network over time provided insight into recovery from traumas and chemical exposures
