Occurrence of the harvest mouse Micromys minutus confirmed in the Åland Islands The harvest mouse, Micromys minutus (Pallas, 1771), is widespread in Finland, except on the Åland Islands, where it has been lacking until now. It has only recently been recorded from the Scandinavian Peninsula, where it first was found in 1985, in Dalsland county in SW Sweden (Loman 1986). Since then, more records have been made in Sweden, both in Dalsland, Värmland, Skåne, Västgötland and also as far north as Norrland (Enoksson 1990, Enoksson & Loman 2004, Hagström 2004, Hallman 2005, Råberg & Holmqvist 2008, Kooij et al. 2016). In Norway the first record was made in 2001, in Hedmark county, SE Norway (Kooij et al. 2001). On 23rd of August 2015 a freshly dead juvenile (5,6 g) harvest mouse was found on the west coast of Enklinge, an inhabited 6 ˟ 3 km island in the NE archipelago of the Åland Islands. The specimen, now in the collection of the Finnish Museum of Natural History, was found 3–4 m from the shore line, in the upper part of a small meadow, below the terrace of a small cottage (all coordinates given in ETRS-TM35FIN, N 6705814 / E 154822). It is supposed to have been caught by a cat, repeatedly seen in the neighbourhood. No catching of micromammals has been conducted on Enklinge. However, on the larger neighbouring inhabited island Kumlinge, ca 5 km S of Enklinge, micromammals systematically were caught in 1984 and 1985, however, with no records of harvest mice. Some observations of harvest mice from islands off the Finnish mainland are also reported. A harvest mouse was caught in the 1970s on the small island Pitkäkari (N 6729971 / E 185887) in the municipality of Kustavi. In June 2013 22 dead harvest mice were found in a washing-up bowl in a small summer cottage on the island Stor-Wehaks (N 6750722 / E 189006) off the city Uusikaupunki, at the west coast of the Bothnian Sea. Records of harvest mice from two islands off Dalsbruk in the municipality of Kimitoön SE from Turku are also reported (Lilla Öland, N 6658925 / E 252374, Träskön, N 6654924 / E 249616). On the south coast of the island Örö (N 6638241 / E 238682), in the outer part of the Archipelago Sea National Park, one harvest mouse was caught in a light trap for Lepidoptera 28.9–7.11.2016. Further east, in the western part of the Gulf of Finland, on the island Gästans (ca N 6645285 / E 317008), in the outer part of the Snappertuna (Raseborg) archipelago, harvest mice and their nests were recorded already in the later part of the 1950s, and again in the early 1980s, at least in 1984. Micromammals have systematically ben caught 1985–2016 in a house inhabited all-the-year-round on the island Sondarö (N 6684027 / E 447912) in the municipality of Pernå. The northernmost part of Sondarö is 0,4 kilometer apart from the mainland. Harvest mice have been caught in the house 1985, 1989, 1995, 2005, 2009 and 2013, out of which 2005 was extraordinary rich in harvest mice. Finally, there is a comment on the water vole (Arvicola terrestris) whose recent and ongoing postglacial expansion to the west has reached the easternmost islands of the Åland Islands, a process documented especially by studying prey remnants in nests of the Eagle Owl (Bubo bubo) on islands and treeless skerries

Shaping and authorising a public health profession

    Get PDF
The aim of this short report is to stimulate a discussion on the state of a public healthprofession in Europe and actions which need to be taken to authorise public healthprofessionals based on their competencies. While regulated professions such as medicaldoctors, nurses, lawyers, and architects can enjoy the benefits of the 2005/36/EC Directive amended by 2013/55/EU Directive on the recognition of professional qualifications, public health professionals are left out from these influential (elite) professions. Firstly, we use the profession traits theory as a framework in arguing whether public health can be a legitimate profession in itself; secondly, we explain who public health professionals are and what usually is required for shaping the public health profession; and thirdly, we attempt to sketch the road to the authorisation or licensing of public health professionals. Finally, we propose some recommendations

Opting out : professional women develop reflexive agency

    Get PDF
Purpose While previous research on opting out has been mainly about women who leave their careers altogether, the purpose of this paper is to follow a broader definition of opting out to investigate the process and experience of women developing agency as they leave masculinist career patterns to adopt alternative career solutions. Design/methodology/approach Building on an interdisciplinary framework and a narrative approach, this paper analyses the opting out and in processes of women managers in Finland and the USA. Findings This paper demonstrates four micro-strategies that the women used to develop individual agency in their processes of opting out of masculinist career models and opting in to alternative solutions for work. These micro-strategies are redefining career success, transcending boundaries, renegotiating working conditions and keeping in touch with professional networks. Practical implications Organisational leaders can use the knowledge of the strategies that empower women in their opting out processes when making decisions regarding working practices. In order to retain their employees, organisations should be supportive of employees’ individual agency and their participation in developing work structures, as well as providing more opportunities for two-way blurring between work and family instead of the current one-way blurring where work spills over to family life, increasing work-family conflict. Originality/value This paper develops a framework to better understand women’s agency during the process of opting out of corporate careers and opting in to solutions like part-time work and self-employment, deepening the current understanding of these solutions and presenting the micro-strategies they use to develop reflexive agency.Peer reviewe

Migration and Pull Factors in Helsinki : A Questionnaire Analysis

    Get PDF
This thesis explores migration and the attractiveness of urban living in the Greater Helsinki region. The aim of the thesis is to explore the attractiveness of the city of Helsinki in terms of regional migration and to identify what characterizes migration to Helsinki. The study focuses in particular on housing, which is a key factor influencing migration decisions in the region. Other central themes in the study are housing policy and regional competition among municipalities. This study focuses solely on households moving within Finnish borders excluding international migration. Migration is examined by comparing in- and out-migration in Helsinki, as well as studying migration to the city s inner and outer areas. The primary research material in the study is a questionnaire data collected by the National Consumer Research Centre. In this thesis the data is used for studying migrants aged 25 45. The main research method is analyzing the data statistically using the SPSS software. Methods include frequency analysis, cross tabulation, factor analysis and descriptive analysis. Additionally, statistical data is used to complement the questionnaire data. The research results indicate that Helsinki s in- and out-migration differs both in terms of the type of households that migrate as well as in the reasons why they migrate. Furthermore, differences can also be detected between migration to the inner and outer parts of Helsinki. According to the research results, a household s current phase of life is crucial in determining where and why they move within the Greater Helsinki region. A household s set of values on the other hand, seems to have a lesser impact on migration within the region, even though households moving to Helsinki seem to value a somewhat more urban lifestyle than the ones moving out of the city. The research also shows a direct correlation between the values of migrants and their current phase of life. Decisions of migrating are heavily influenced by wider societal issues. In the Greater Helsinki region the labor and housing market appear to have a great influence on the direction of migration streams. According to the results, households move to and from Helsinki for different reasons. The primary reasons for moving to Helsinki are related to the city s diverse labor market and to the working careers of households. Issues related to urban living and an urban lifestyle seem to be relevant although not the main reason why people move to Helsinki. The research material indicates that Helsinki s urban environment is both a pull and a push factor affecting the decisions of migrants. The city attracts those seeking urban living, but on the contrary does not appeal to households seeking more space and wishing to live closer to nature. According to the research, Helsinki with its densely built urban environment mainly attracts singles and childless couples, whereas the city region s other municipalities are more attractive for families with children. Housing policy is one of the main reasons determining where people move within the Helsinki region. As for the city of Helsinki, improving the city s attractiveness seems to be closely linked to how well the city manages to execute its future housing policies and how well alternative living preferences can be taken into account in planning.Tutkimuksen aiheena on muuttoliike ja kaupunkiasumisen vetovoima Helsingin seudulla. Tavoitteena on kartoittaa Helsingin asemaa seudullisen muuttoliikkeen näkökulmasta ja tunnistaa Helsingin tulomuuton erityispiirteitä. Tutkimuksessa selvitetään, minkä tyyppiset kotitaloudet muuttavat Helsinkiin ja miksi. Lisäksi pyritään kartoittamaan, miten kantakaupunki ja esikaupunki eroavat toisistaan muuttoliikkeen osalta. Tutkimuksessa keskitytään etenkin asumiseen, jonka merkitys on keskeinen Helsingin seudun muuttovirtojen taustalla.

In this paper we investigate how various equivalences between effective field theories of N=2N=2 SUSY Yang-Mills theory with matter can be understood through Higgs breaking, i.e. by giving expectation values to squarks. We give explicit expressions for the flat directions for a wide class of examples.Comment: 11 pages, Late
