    Ignorance Radicalized

    The aim of this paper is twofold. I criticize Michael Devitt's linguistic---as opposed to Chomsky's psychological---conception of linguistics on the one hand, and I modify his related view on linguistic intuitions on the other. I argue that Devitt's argument for the linguistic conception is in conflict with one of the main theses of that very conception, according to which linguistics should be about physical sentence tokens of a given language rather than about the psychologically real competence of native speakers. The basis of this conflict is that Devitt's view on language, as I will show, inherits too much from the criticized Chomskian view. This is also the basis of Devitt's strange claim that it is the linguist, and not the ordinary speaker, whose linguistic intuition should have an evidential role in linguistics. I will argue for the opposite by sketching a view on language that is more appropriate to the linguistic conception. That is, in criticizing Devitt, I am not defending the Chomskian approach. My aim is to radicalize Devitt's claims

    Application of numerical integration techniques for orbit determination of state-of-the-art LEO satellites

    Classical numerical integration methods have been tested for determining the orbit of most recent Low Earth Orbiter (hereafter LEO) satellites. In general, numerical integration techniques for orbit determination are commonly used to fill the gap between two discrete, observed epochs. In this study orbits have been determined using the EGM96 gravity model by the Euler, Runge-Kutta, Bulirsch-Stoer and Adams-Moulton numerical integration techniques among others. This analysis is performed for a LEO, the GOCE, and for medium altitude satellite, one GPS satellite. The orbits are integrated under different assumptions on the roughness of the force model, considering effects of the ellipticity, high order gravity and non-static Earth generated accelerations on the orbit

    Bounding the wild set (counting the minimum number of wild primes in Hilbert symbol equivalent number fields)

    This dissertation makes a contribution to the study of Witt rings of quadratic forms over number fields. To every pair of algebraic number fields with isomorphic Witt rings one can associate a number, called the minimum number of wild primes. The situation is particularly nice when this number is 0; often it is not 0. Earlier investigations have established lower bounds for this number. In this dissertation an analysis is presented that expresses the minimum number of wild primes in terms of the number of wild dyadic primes. This formula not only gives immediate upper bounds, but can be considered to be an exact formula for the minimum number of wild primes
