Review of Justin Watkins (2013): Dictionary of WA (2 vols) With Translations into English, Burmese and Chinese.
This handsome two volume dictionary is the culmination of a more-than-decade long project (see: www.humancomp.org/wadict/), often involving a substantial team of collaborators (named in the Acknowledgements xv-xvi), and supported by funding from the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council and support by the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London. Additionally approval was obtained from officials of the United Wa State Party at Pang Kham

Petri net equivalence
Determining whether two Petri nets are equivalent is an interesting problem from both practical and theoretical standpoints. Although it is undecidable in the general case, for many interesting nets the equivalence problem is solvable. This paper explores, mostly from a theoretical point of view, some of the issues of Petri net equivalence, including both reachability sets and languages. Some new definitions of reachability set equivalence are described which allow the markings of some places to be treated identically or ignored, analogous to the Petri net languages in which multiple transitions may be labeled with the same symbol or with the empty string. The complexity of some decidable Petri net equivalence problems is analyzed

PAN AIR summary document (version 1.0)
The capabilities and limitations of the panel aerodynamics (PAN AIR) computer program system are summarized. This program uses a higher order panel method to solve boundary value problems involving the Prandtl-Glauert equation for subsonic and supersonic potential flows. Both aerodynamic and hydrodynamic problems can be solved using this modular software which is written for the CDC 6600 and 7600, and the CYBER 170 series computers
Results of the 1978 NASA/JPL balloon flight solar cell calibration program
The 1978 scheduled solar cell calibration balloon flight was successfully completed. Thirty six modules were carried to an altitude of above 36 kilometers. Recovery of telemetry and flight packages was without incident. These calibrated standard cells are used as reference standards in simulator testing of cells and arrays with similar spectral response characteristics. The factors affecting the spectral transmission of the atmosphere at various altitudes are summarized
Temporal contrast analysis in human vision
Nine experiments are reported which investigate the mechanisms mediating the perception of temporal contrast, the change of luminance over time, by the human visual system. A distinction is made between linear systems, whose performance may be appropriately characterised in the frequency domain, and nonlinear systems which are sensitive to the temporal structure of visual stimuli. Of particular interest is the role played by systems which are selectively sensitive to relatively slow, nonperiodic luminance changes in the perception of both periodic and nonperiodic temporal contrast. Using a trapezoidal waveform in which amplitude, frequency, and luminance gradient may be varied independently, it is lust shown that the visual system is sensitive to the slope of a temporal profile. An adaptation technique is then used to show that waveform - specific threshold elevation occurs at low flicker frequencies, but not above about 5 Hz. The pattern of results suggests that separate channels exist for fast and slow luminance transitions, irrespective of their periodicity, and that the 'slow' system is subdivided into brightening and darkening channels. In the final two experiments the fast and slow systems are studied in detail by probing the internal representations of step and ramp stimuli, using a masking technique. The step response is consistent with a system whose output is the second derivative of the smoothed input function. The same system can also account for the measured ramp response. This latter finding is likely to be an artifact of the measurement technique, using a 'fast' pulse stimulus. Polarity - specific interactions are observed which indicate polarity selectivity at the level of the 2nd derivative, or the filter output. The experimental findings are integrated within a model of the complete temporal contrast system. While both the structure and the parameters of the fast system are well specified, further work remains on the characteristics of the slow system. The place of temporal contrast analysis within a larger model of movement perception is discussed

The Khom script of the Kommodam Rebellion
This article describes a previously undescribed script from Laos. The script was used by a political leader as part of his resistance effort against the colonial French, used to symbolize his power more than to communicate factual content. The script is unique in the way it has separate symbols for syllable onsets and codas
