Coherent Diffractive Imaging Using Randomly Coded Masks

Coherent diffractive imaging (CDI) provides new opportunities for high resolution X-ray imaging with simultaneous amplitude and phase contrast. Extensions to CDI broaden the scope of the technique for use in a wide variety of experimental geometries and physical systems. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a new extension to CDI that encodes additional information through the use of a series of randomly coded masks. The information gained from the few additional diffraction measurements removes the need for typical object-domain constraints; the algorithm uses prior information about the masks instead. The experiment is performed using a laser diode at 532.2 nm, enabling rapid prototyping for future X-ray synchrotron and even free electron laser experiments. Diffraction patterns are collected with up to 15 different masks placed between a CCD detector and a single sample. Phase retrieval is performed using a convex relaxation routine known as "PhaseCut" followed by a variation on Fienup's input-output algorithm. The reconstruction quality is judged via calculation of phase retrieval transfer functions as well as by an object-space comparison between reconstructions and a lens-based image of the sample. The results of this analysis indicate that with enough masks (in this case 3 or 4) the diffraction phases converge reliably, implying stability and uniqueness of the retrieved solution

A Master’s Recital in Wind Band Conducting

Stephen Seaberg conducted three performances that constituted a recital in partial fulfillment of a Master in Music in Wind Band Conducting. The performances took place on the evenings of Tuesday, November 15th, 2022; Thursday, February 23rd, 2023; and Tuesday, April 11th, 2023 in the Great Hall at the Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center. The recital program included four works that relate to historical music in different ways, and three of which are part of the standard repertoire. The works included: Paul Hindemith’s Geschwindmarsch by Beethoven (1946), Percy Grainger’s Ye Banks and Braes O’ Bonnie Doon (1936), Li Chan’s Folksong of Midu (2017), and Vincent Persichetti’s Divertimento for Band (1950). The performing ensemble was the University of Northern Iowa Wind Ensemble

Lay Counseling: A Preliminary Survey of Who, What and How

    Get PDF
The results of a preliminary survey of lay counseling are presented. Lay counseling is a concept which the author has previously defined and discussed in this journal. Now data are brought to bear in elaborating the nature of this phenomenon which is a vital element of the mental health maintenance and rehabilitation process. The survey included the types of problems which are the subject of lay counseling, the responses to them, the relation of the lay counselor to the recipient, the effectiveness and other characterristics of the activity which are presented

Lay Counseling: The Basis of Prevention in Mental Health

The purpose of this paper is to increase the recognition of lay counseling as a basis of mental health prevention and to present a summary of the state of knowledge about it. Lay counseling is cast as one of several components of mental health prevention and treatment, a definition is offered which distinguishes it from paraprofessional and selp-help services, knowledge about it both direct and tangential is summarized, and future research and policy implications are discussed

The NASA Glenn Research Center: An Economic Impact Study Fiscal Year 2015

This report presents an analysis of the economic impact of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s John H. Glenn Research Center (NASA Glenn) during its fiscal year (FY) 2015. It uses an input-output model, which reflects the buy-sell relationships among industries, the household sector, and the government sector in a region, to estimate the effect of NASA Glenn’s spending on the economies of both Northeast Ohio and the state of Ohio. This model assesses economic impact in terms of growth in total output (sales); value added (output less intermediary goods); household earnings, number of new and supported jobs, and taxes. The report also provides an overview of NASA Glenn and describes some of its research and development (R&D) activities. It looks at changes in NASA Glenn’s employees in terms of payroll, occupation, and place of residence. The report further provides information on NASA Glenn’s expenditures and revenues, awards to academic institutions, and taxes contributed by employees. The analysis was conducted by the Center for Economic Development at Cleveland State University’s Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs. This FY 2015 report is an update to previous studies published in 1996, 2000, 2005, and annually from 2007 through 2015
