    The roles of “old” and “new” media tools and technologies in the facilitation of violent extremism and terrorism

    This chapter describes and discusses the roles of media tools and technologies in the facilitation of violent extremism and terrorism. Rather than focusing on how media report on terrorism, we investigate how extremist and terrorist groups and movements themselves have exploited various “traditional” and “new” media tools, from print to digital, outlining the significance that they have had on extremists’ ability to mark territory, intimidate some audiences, connect with other (sympathetic) audiences, radicalize, and even recruit. Underlined is that violent extremists and terrorists of all stripes have, over time, used every means at their disposal to forward their communicative goals. Also worth noting is that ‘old’ media tools are not extinct and while ‘new’ media play a prominent role in contemporary violent extremism and terrorism, ‘old’ tools—everything from murals to magazines—continue to be utilized in tandem with the former

    In the market for tertiary level commercial music education, educators find themselves pulled between students\u27 commercial stylistic interests and the seemingly incommensurable genres better suited to exploring advanced theoretical concepts and vocabulary. This divide can lead to a motivational deficiency in a student that, in turn, can hinder their development and render their collegiate experience less worth the expense. In the interest of combating this potential motivational deficiency, this recording project and accompanying paper explores and demonstrates the process of modernizing and recontextualizing material found in these less commercially mainstream genres. By adapting vocabulary and approaches learned from the transcription and faithful recreation of bluegrass, traditional jazz, and jazz-rock fusion guitar solos in more modern and commercially viable contexts, this project acts as a guide to students struggling to see the benefit in studying genres outside of their primary sphere of influence by encouraging the creative application of new material

    Preliminary Characterization of the O4+ Beam in Linac 3

    The new GTS-LHC ECR ion source was installed in 2005. An oxygen 4+ beam was delivered to LEIR both for injection line (June 2005) and for the ring commissioning (September to December 2005). During these runs, studies were made of the beam transport in the Linac and towards LEIR. Some of the most significant results concerning the Linac are presented in this report. From 2006 the ECR source and the Linac3 delivered a lead beam for the LEIR commissioning, leaving some questions open for the oxygen beam transport. This report serves as a summary of the status of the investigations on the oxygen beam

    Right-wing extremists’ persistent online presence: history and contemporary trends

    This policy brief traces how Western right-wing extremists have exploited the power of the internet from early dial-up bulletin board systems to contemporary social media and messaging apps. It demonstrates how the extreme right has been quick to adopt a variety of emerging online tools, not only to connect with the like-minded, but to radicalise some audiences while intimidating others, and ultimately to recruit new members, some of whom have engaged in hate crimes and/or terrorism. Highlighted throughout is the fast pace of change of both the internet and its associated platforms and technologies, on the one hand, and the extreme right, on the other, as well as how these have interacted and evolved over time. Underlined too is the persistence, despite these changes, of rightwing extremists’ online presence, which poses challenges for effectively responding to this activity moving forward

    An increase of beam intensity and brightness is essential for future upgrades of existing CERN proton accelerator facilities. A first step can be an injection of H- ions from a new higher energy H- linear accelerator called Linac4 into the Proton Synchrotron Booster (PSB. A second step could be the complete replacement of the PSB by a highpower linear accelerator, called SPL, injecting directly into the Proton Synchrotron (PS.     Phase Rotation, Cooling And Acceleration Of Muon Beams: A Comparison Of Different Approaches

    Experimental and theoretical activities are underway at CERN with the aim of examining the feasibility of a very-high-flux neutrino source. In the present scheme, a high-power proton beam (some 4 MW) bombards a target where pions are produced. The pions are collected and decay to muons under controlled optical condition. The muons are cooled and accelerated to a final energy of 50 GeV before being injected into a decay ring where they decay under well-defined conditions of energy and emittance. We present the most challenging parts of the whole scenario, the muon capture, the ionisation-cooling and the first stage of the muon acceleration.     Comparison of Simulation Codes for the Beam Dynamics of Low-Energy Ions

    Results are presented of the simulation of low–energy ion dynamics with three different codes: KOBRA, IGUN and CPO. To share work between different codes one needs to be confident that they agree. For test cases, good agreement was found between the codes and analytical solutions. Where possible, results have been compared to experimental data from the CERN Laser Ion Source.
