    Bregman Cost for Non-Gaussian Noise

    One of the tasks of the Bayesian inverse problem is to find a good estimate based on the posterior probability density. The most common point estimators are the conditional mean (CM) and maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimates, which correspond to the mean and the mode of the posterior, respectively. From a theoretical point of view it has been argued that the MAP estimate is only in an asymptotic sense a Bayes estimator for the uniform cost function, while the CM estimate is a Bayes estimator for the means squared cost function. Recently, it has been proven that the MAP estimate is a proper Bayes estimator for the Bregman cost if the image is corrupted by Gaussian noise. In this work we extend this result to other noise models with log-concave likelihood density, by introducing two related Bregman cost functions for which the CM and the MAP estimates are proper Bayes estimators. Moreover, we also prove that the CM estimate outperforms the MAP estimate, when the error is measured in a certain Bregman distance, a result previously unknown also in the case of additive Gaussian noise

    Galectin-3. The impact on the clinical management of patients with thyroid nodules and future perspectives

    Galectins (S-type lectins) are an evolutionarily-conserved family of lectin molecules, which can be expressed intracellularly and in the extracellular matrix, as well. Galectins bind β-galactose-containing glycoconjugates and are functionally active in converting glycan-related information into cell biological programs. Altered glycosylation notably occurring in cancer cells and expression of specific galectins provide, indeed, a fashionable mechanism of molecular interactions able to regulate several tumor relevant functions, among which are cell adhesion and migration, cell differentiation, gene transcription and RNA splicing, cell cycle and apoptosis. Furthermore, several galectin molecules also play a role in regulating the immune response. These functions are strongly dependent on the cell context, in which specific galectins and related glyco-ligands are expressed. Thyroid cancer likely represents the paradigmatic tumor model in which experimental studies on galectins' glycobiology, in particular on galectin-3 expression and function, contributed greatly to the improvement of cancer diagnosis. The discovery of a restricted expression of galectin-3 in well-differentiated thyroid carcinomas (WDTC), compared to normal and benign thyroid conditions, contributed also to promoting preclinical studies aimed at exploring new strategies for imaging thyroid cancer in vivo based on galectin-3 immuno-targeting. Results derived from these recent experimental studies promise a further improvement of both thyroid cancer diagnosis and therapy in the near future. In this review, the biological role of galectin-3 expression in thyroid cancer, the validation and translation to a clinical setting of a galectin-3 test method for the preoperative characterization of thyroid nodules and a galectin-3-based immuno-positron emission tomography (immuno-PET) imaging of thyroid cancer in vivo are presented and discussed

    Der Aufsatz beschäftigt sich mit der Politik gegenüber ländlichen Räumen im Italien und Spanien der 950er und 960er Jahre. Er untersucht die sozio-ökonomischen Folgen dieser Politik am Beispiel Siziliens und Andalusiens. Der Vergleich der beiden ländlichen Räume verweist auf ein gemeinsames Entwicklungsmodell im südlichen Europa, in dem die Steigerung landwirtschaftlicher Produktion und die Verringerung der in der Landwirtschaft tätigen Arbeitskräfte im Mittelpunkt standen. Siedlungsprojekte spielten demgegenüber nur eine vergleichsweise geringe Rolle. Der Beitrag rekurriert auf Datenmaterial, das den Grad der Beschäftigungen in der Landwirtschaft zwischen 950 und 970 widerspiegelt. Er zeigt, dass zwar immer weniger Menschen insgesamt in der Landwirtschaft beschäftigt waren, die Zahl von Landarbeitern, die nicht über Grundbesitz verfügten, aber zunahm

    Transparency in Negotiation of European Union With Big Pharma on COVID-19 Vaccines

    Immunization through vaccination represents one of the most cost-effective public health interventions and the main tool for primary prevention of communicable diseases. Vaccination programs and vaccine prices, however, vary considerably among and within countries in the European Union (EU), because of the differences in the way healthcare systems are organized at the national or regional levels. These differences may lead to a new threat represented by the so-called “vaccine nationalism” that keep negotiations with the pharmaceutical industry behind the closed doors of each single nation, thus undermining global efforts to ensure fair access to vaccines for everyone (1). The severity of the recent COVID-19 pandemic is urging a major change in our capabilities to respond in the most appropriate and coordinated manner to the emergency situation. Transparency about the different roles of all stakeholders, either public or private, of vaccine manufacturers, and of health authorities and, most importantly, transparency in negotiations regarding vaccine price, could help avoid misconceptions, thus strengthening the collaboration required to protect against the pandemic

    Sparse bayesian imaging of solar flares

    We consider imaging of solar flares from NASA Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI) data as a parametric imaging problem, where flares are represented as a finite collection of geometric shapes. We set up a Bayesian model in which the number of objects forming the image is a priori unknown, as well as their shapes. We use a sequential Monte Carlo algorithm to explore the corresponding posterior distribution. We apply the method to synthetic and experimental data, largely known in the RHESSI community. The method reconstructs improved images of solar flares, with the additional advantage of providing uncertainty quantification of the estimated parameters

    Effects of the Tensor Force on the Multipole Response in Finite Nuclei

    We present a thorough analysis of the effects of the tensor interaction on the multipole response of magic nuclei, using the fully self-consistent Random Phase Approximation (RPA) model with Skyrme interactions. We disentangle the modifications to the static mean field induced by the tensor terms, and the specific features of the residual particle-hole (p-h) tensor interaction, for quadrupole (2+), octupole (3-), and also magnetic dipole (1+) responses. It is pointed out that the tensor force has a larger effect on the magnetic dipole states than on the natural parity states 2+ and 3-, especially at the mean field level. Perspectives for a better assessment of the tensor force parameters are eventually discussed
