    The environmental problems are phenomena determined by essential modifications that are produced in nature under man’s influence. Initially the environmental problems have a local origin, yet they affect large areas and finally become regional or global problems.We experience a development crisis with a natural-human character, which gets worse the balance of compatibility between the natural environment and that created by man, with consequences which become irreversible in time and space, implying an increasingly large number of people being able to endanger life evolution at world level where: „Poverty is an enemy of the environment as big as the richness” (V. Tufescu, M. Tufescu, 1981).   

    Non-Beiter ternary cyclotomic polynomials with an optimally large set of coefficients

    Let l>=1 be an arbitrary odd integer and p,q and r primes. We show that there exist infinitely many ternary cyclotomic polynomials \Phi_{pqr}(x) with l^2+3l+5<= p<q<r such that the set of coefficients of each of them consists of the p integers in the interval [-(p-l-2)/2,(p+l+2)/2]. It is known that no larger coefficient range is possible. The Beiter conjecture states that the cyclotomic coefficients a_{pqr}(k) of \Phi_{pqr} satisfy |a_{pqr}(k)|<= (p+1)/2 and thus the above family contradicts the Beiter conjecture. The two already known families of ternary cyclotomic polynomials with an optimally large set of coefficients (found by G. Bachman) satisfy the Beiter conjecture.Comment: 20 pages, 7 Table

    Monitoring Java Programs with Java PathExplorer

    AbstractWe present recent work on the development of Java PathExplorer (JPaX), a tool for monitoring the execution of Java programs. JPaX can be used during program testing to gain increased information about program executions, and can potentially furthermore be applied during operation to survey safety critical systems. The tool facilitates automated instrumentation of a program's byte code, which will then emit events to an observer during its execution. The observer checks the events against user provided high level requirement specifications, for example temporal logic formulae, and against lower level error detection procedures, usually concurrency related such as deadlock and data race algorithms. High level requirement specifications together with their underlying logics are defined in rewriting logic using Maude, and then can either be directly checked using Maude rewriting engine, or be first translated to efficient data structures and then checked in Java

    A semantic approach to interpolation

    Craig interpolation is investigated for various types of formulae. By shifting the focus from syntactic to semantic interpolation, we generate, prove and classify a series of interpolation results for first-order logic. A few of these results non-trivially generalize known interpolation results; all the others are new. We also discuss someapplications of our results to the theory of institutions and of algebraic specifications,and a Craig-Robinson version of these results

    Simultaneous cathodoluminescence hyperspectral imaging and X-ray microanalysis

    A facility has been developed to acquire hyperspectral cathodoluminescence (CL) images simultaneously with X-ray composition data. Based around an electron microprobe, the system uses a built-in Cassegrain microscope to efficiently couple emitted light directly into the entrance slit of an optical spectrograph. A cooled array detector allows the parallel acquisition of CL spectra, which are then built up into a multidimensional data-cube containing the full set of spectrally- and spatially-resolved information for later analysis. This setup has the advantage of allowing wavelength-dispersive X-ray (WDX) data to be recorded concurrently, providing a powerful technique for the direct comparison of luminescent and compositional properties of materials. The combination of beam and sample scanning thus allows the correlation of composition and luminescence inhomogeneities on length scales ranging from a few cm to sub-micron
