    Ethnic identity has to do with freely set of values, attitudes, and behavior from oneā€™s cultural legacy in order to affirm a unique sense of peoplehood. In the United States ethnic groups such as the Chicano or Mexican American are often stigmatized, and the psychological burden of ethnic awareness can weigh heavily. Yet a healthy sense of ethnic identity is absolutely necessary for a positive self-concept when a person is part of a group that is slighted because of race or appearance. The question then is: how do Chicanos come to terms with their cultural tradition in a society that discourages than from asking who they are

    Magnetosheath electrostatic turbulence

    The spectrum of electrostatic plasma waves in the terrestrial magnetosheath was studied using the plasma wave experiment on the IMP-6 satellite. Electrostatic plasma wave turbulence is almost continuously present throughout the magnetosheath with broadband (20 Hz- 70 kHz) r.m.s. field intensities typically 0.01 - 1.0 millivolts/m. Peak intensities of about 1.0 millivolts/m near the electron plasma frequency (30 - 60 kHz) were detected occasionally. The components usually identified in the spectrum of magnetosheath electrostatic turbulence include a high frequency ( or = 30 kHz) component peaking at the electron plasma frequency f sub pe, a low frequency component with a broad intensity maximum below the nominal ion plasma frequency f sub pi (approximately f sub pe/43), and a less well defined intermediate component in the range f sub pi f f sub pe. The intensity distribution of magnetosheath electrostatic turbulence clearly shows that the low frequency component is associated with the bow shock, suggesting that the ion heating begun at the shock continues into the downstream magnetosheath

    Abstract Recent studies have conflicting data regarding the presence of intra-amniotic microbiota. Viral communities are increasingly recognized as important although overlooked components of the human microbiota. It is unknown if the developing fetus is exposed to a community of viruses (virome). Given the debate over the existence of an intra-amniotic microbial community and the importance of understanding how the infant gut is populated, we characterized the virome and bacterial microbiota of amniotic fluid from 24 uncomplicated term pregnancies using next-generation sequencing methods. Contrary to expectations, the bacterial microbiota of amniotic fluid was indistinguishable from contamination controls. Viral reads were sparse in the amniotic fluid, and we found no evidence of a core viral community across samples

    Automated Particle Identification through Regression Analysis of Size, Shape and Colour

    Rapid point of care diagnostic tests and tests to provide therapeutic information are now available for a range of specific conditions from the measurement of blood glucose levels for diabetes to card agglutination tests for parasitic infections. Due to a lack of specificity these test are often then backed up by more conventional lab based diagnostic methods for example a card agglutination test may be carried out for a suspected parasitic infection in the field and if positive a blood sample can then be sent to a lab for confirmation. The eventual diagnosis is often achieved by microscopic examination of the sample. In this paper we propose a computerized vision system for aiding in the diagnostic process; this system used a novel particle recognition algorithm to improve specificity and speed during the diagnostic process. We will show the detection and classification of different types of cells in a diluted blood sample using regression analysis of their size, shape and colour. The first step is to define the objects to be tracked by a Gaussian Mixture Model for background subtraction and binary opening and closing for noise suppression. After subtracting the objects of interest from the background the next challenge is to predict if a given object belongs to a certain category or not. This is a classification problem, and the output of the algorithm is a Boolean value (true/false). As such the computer program should be able to ā€predictā€ with reasonable level of confidence if a given particle belongs to the kind we are looking for or not. We show the use of a binary logistic regression analysis with three continuous predictors: size, shape and color histogram. The results suggest this variables could be very useful in a logistic regression equation as they proved to have a relatively high predictive value on their own

    Avoiding entanglement loss when two-qubit quantum gates are controlled by electronic excitation

    A solid-state two-qubit quantum gate was recently proposed that might be made in a silicon fabrication plant in the near future. In this class of device, entanglement between two quantum bits is controlled by a change from a largely unentangled ground electronic state to an excited state in which useful entanglement can be produced. Such gates have potential advantages, both because they exploit known solid-state behaviour and they separate the storage and manipulation of quantum information. It is important that the excitation step does not create decoherence. We analyse a type of gate proposed before, in which the excitation involves a control electron that interacts with the qubit spins in the excited state. The dynamics of an idealized (but fairly general) gate of this type show that it can be operated to produce a standard two-qubit entangling state

    Using 4.7 fb^-1 of data taken at CESR at energies at and near the Upsilon(4S) we have studied the decay B- -> D{*+}pi-pi- (and its conjugate). We observe a new, broad charmed meson state, which we interpret as D_J(j=1/2), in its decay to D{*+}pi-. Our preliminary results indicate the mass and width of this L=1 state to be m = (2461 +41/-3} +/-10 +/-32) MeV and Gamma = (290 +101/-79 +/-26 +/-36) MeV, with the third uncertainty associated with the parameterization of the relative strong phases. In addition we have measured several new branching fractions of charged B mesons.
