    Angle-Resolved Spectroscopy of Electron-Electron Scattering in a 2D System

    Electron-beam propagation experiments have been used to determine the energy and angle dependence of electron-electron (ee) scattering a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in a very direct manner by a new spectroscopy method. The experimental results are in good agreement with recent theories and provide direct evidence for the differences between ee-scattering in a 2DEG as compared with 3D systems. Most conspicuous is the increased importance of small-angle scattering in a 2D system, resulting in a reduced (but energy-dependent) broadening of the electron beam.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Coordinated RNA-Seq and peptidomics identify neuropeptides and G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) in the large pine weevil Hylobius abietis, a major forestry pest

    Hylobius abietis (Linnaeus), or large pine weevil (Coleoptera, Curculionidae), is a pest of European coniferous forests. In order to gain understanding of the functional physiology of this species, we have assembled a de novo transcriptome of H. abietis, from sequence data obtained by Next Generation Sequencing. In particular, we have identified genes encoding neuropeptides, peptide hormones and their putative G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) to gain insights into neuropeptide-modulated processes. The transcriptome was assembled de novo from pooled paired-end, sequence reads obtained from RNA from whole adults, gut and central nervous system tissue samples. Data analysis was performed on the transcripts obtained from the assembly including, annotation, gene ontology and functional assignment as well as transcriptome completeness assessment and KEGG pathway analysis. Pipelines were created using Bioinformatics tools and techniques for prediction and identification of neuropeptides and neuropeptide receptors. Peptidomic analysis was also carried out using a combination of MALDI-TOF as well as Q-Exactive Orbitrap mass spectrometry to confirm the identified neuropeptide. 41 putative neuropeptide families were identified in H. abietis, including Adipokinetic hormone (AKH), CAPA and DH31. Neuropeptide F, which has not been yet identified in the model beetle T. castaneum, was identified. Additionally, 24 putative neuropeptide and 9 leucine-rich repeat containing G protein coupled receptor-encoding transcripts were determined using both alignment as well as non-alignment methods. This information, submitted to the NCBI sequence read archive repository (SRA accession: SRP133355), can now be used to inform understanding of neuropeptide-modulated physiology and behaviour in H. abietis; and to develop specific neuropeptide-based tools for H. abietis control

    Aligning patient's ideas of a good life with medically indicated therapies in geriatric rehabilitation using smart sensors

    New technologies such as smart sensors improve rehabilitation processes and thereby increase older adults’ capabilities to participate in social life, leading to direct physical and mental health benefits. Wearable smart sensors for home use have the additional advantage of monitoring day-to-day activities and thereby identifying rehabilitation progress and needs. However, identifying and selecting rehabilitation priorities is ethically challenging because physicians, therapists, and caregivers may impose their own personal values leading to paternalism. Therefore, we develop a discussion template consisting of a series of adaptable questions for the patient–physician encounter based on the capability approach. The goal is to improve geriatric rehabilitation and thereby increase participation in social life and well-being. To achieve this goal, we first analyzed what is considered important for participation on basis of the capability approach, human rights, and ethics of care. Second, we conducted an ethical analysis of each of the four identified dimensions of participation: political, economic, socio-cultural, and care. To improve compliance with rehabilitation measures, health professionals must align rehabilitation measures in an open dialogue with the patient’s aspiration for participation in each dimension. A discussion template based on the capability approach allows for a proactive approach in patient information and stimulates a critical assessment of treatment alternatives while reducing the risk of imposing personal values

    The Influence of Chemical Short Range Order on Atomic Diffusion in Al-Ni Melts

    We use inelastic neutron scattering and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation to investigate the chemical short range order (CSRO), visible through prepeaks in the structure factors, and its relation to self diffusion in Al-Ni melts. As a function of composition at 1795K Ni self diffusion coefficients from experiment and simulation exhibit a non-linear dependence with a pronounced increase on the Al-rich side. This comes along with a change in CSRO with increasing Al content that is related to a more dense packing of the atoms in Ni-rich Al-Ni systems.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure

    Magnetic and structural properties of GeMn films: precipitation of intermetallic nanomagnets

    We present a comprehensive study relating the nanostructure of Ge_0.95Mn_0.05 films to their magnetic properties. The formation of ferromagnetic nanometer sized inclusions in a defect free Ge matrix fabricated by low temperature molecular beam epitaxy is observed down to substrate temperatures T_S as low as 70 deg. Celsius. A combined transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) analysis of the films identifies the inclusions as precipitates of the ferromagnetic compound Mn_5Ge_3. The volume and amount of these precipitates decreases with decreasing T_S. Magnetometry of the films containing precipitates reveals distinct temperature ranges: Between the characteristic ferromagnetic transition temperature of Mn_5Ge_3 at approximately room temperature and a lower, T_S dependent blocking temperature T_B the magnetic properties are dominated by superparamagnetism of the Mn_5Ge_3 precipitates. Below T_B, the magnetic signature of ferromagnetic precipitates with blocked magnetic moments is observed.     Pre-competition cardiac screening in professional handball players - setting up at the EHF European Handball Championship 2010 in Austria

    Zusammenfassung: In vielen Sportarten wird ein regelmäßiges, richtliniengetreues kardiales Screening zur Verhinderung des plötzlichen Herztods noch immer nicht gewährleistet. Wir nahmen die Handball Europameisterschaften, welche 2010 in Wien und weiteren Städten in Österreich stattfanden, zum Anlass, die aktuelle Situation bei Toplevel-Handballern zu untersuchen: Ein standardisierter Fragebogen wurde vor dem Turnier an alle qualifizierten Teams und Spieler versandt. Eine Rücklaufrate von 42,7 % kann zum Schluss führen, dass das Problem des plötzlichen Herztods bei den Spielern und Verantwortlichen unterschätzt wird. Die überwiegende Mehrzahl der Spieler (82 %) wurde gemäß der Auswertung der Fragebögen korrekt, entsprechend der aktuellen Screening-Richtlinien untersucht. In gut der Hälfte der Teams wurde das Screening jedoch "inhomogen" durchgeführt. 5 Spieler (4,1 %) wurden zumindest nicht innerhalb der letzten Jahre untersucht, bei 1 Spieler (0,8 %) wurde kein EKG durchgeführt. Während 69 % der Handballer ihr erstes Screening erst nach dem Alter von 18 Jahren durchliefen, wurden 16 Spieler (13,1 %) gar niemals zuvor einer kardialen Vorsorgeuntersuchung unterzogen. Schließlich identifizierten wir aufgrund der Fragebögen 17 Athleten (13,9 %) mit einer hoch suspekten Anamnese, wovon 2 Athleten (1,6 %) niemals zuvor kardiologisch abgeklärt wurde

    Motor skill learning-induced functional plasticity in the primary somatosensory cortex: A comparison between young and older adults

    While in young adults (YAs) the underlying neural mechanisms of motor learning are well-studied, studies on the involvement of the somatosensory system during motor skill learning in older adults (OAs) remain sparse. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate motor learning-induced neuroplasticity in the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) in YAs and OAs. Somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) were used to quantify somatosensory activation prior and immediately after motor skill learning in 20 right-handed healthy YAs (age range: 19–35 years) and OAs (age range: 57–76 years). Participants underwent a single session of a 30-min co-contraction task of the abductor pollicis brevis (APB) and deltoid muscle. To assess the effect of motor learning, muscle onset asynchrony (MOA) between the onsets of the contractions of both muscles was measured using electromyography monitoring. In both groups, MOA shortened significantly during motor learning, with YAs showing bigger reductions. No changes were found in SEP amplitudes after motor learning in both groups. However, a correlation analysis revealed an association between baseline SEP amplitudes of the N20/P25 and N30 SEP component and the motor learning slope in YAs such that higher amplitudes are related to higher learning. Hence, the present findings suggest that SEP amplitudes might serve as a predictor of individual motor learning success, at least in YAs. Additionally, our results suggest that OAs are still capable of learning complex motor tasks, showing the importance of motor training in higher age to remain an active part of our society as a prevention for care dependency
