Hedonic and Transcendent Conceptions of Value
In this paper we introduce a conceptual distinction between a hedonic and transcendent conception of value. We posit three linguistic earmarks by which one can distinguish these conceptions of value. We seek validation for the conceptual distinctions by examining the language contained in reviews of cars and reviews of paintings. In undertaking the empirical examination, we draw on the work of M.A.K. Halliday to identify clauses as fundamental units of meaning and to specify process types that can be mapped onto theoretical distinctions between the two conceptions of value. Extensions of this research are discussed
Revisiting the Meaning of Leadership
During the past fifty years, organizational scholarship on leadership has shifted from a focus on the significance of leadership for meaning-making to the significance of leadership for economic performance. This shift has been problematic for two reasons. First, it has given rise to numerous conceptual difficulties that now plague the study of leadership. Second, there is now comparatively little attention to the question of how individuals find meaning in the economic sphere even though this question should arguably be one of the most important questions for organizational scholarship. This chapter discusses several reasons for the shift, arguing that one of the most important has been the lack of a clear definition and operationalization of meaningful economic activity. As a first step to redressing this shift, we offer a definition and operationalization of meaningful action, and we propose a typology of executive behaviors as a foundation for a systematic exploration of the meaning-making capacity of leaders. We conclude with a discussion of the relationship between the capacity of leaders to infuse meaning and the capacity of leaders to impact on performance
Markets, Hierarchies, and Status Orders: Wherein lies the control?
MARKETS, HIERARCHIES, AND STATUSORDERS: WHEREIN LIES THE CONTROLThis paper highlights the significance of status tocontrol in both markets and hierarchies. ln so doing,it takes issue with the conventional view thatmarkets and hierarchies represent alternative controlstructures. lmplications for Williamson's (1975, 1985,1991) transaction cost framework are discussed
Role of Oocyte-Specific cKIT on Development of Ovarian Reserve
Many chemotherapy drugs cause female infertility by permanently shutting down the ovaries. In pre-pubescent girls, this can also result in abnormal sexual development. It is known that many of these harmful chemotherapy drugs bind to cKIT receptors throughout the body. cKIT receptors exist in particularly high concentrations in the ovaries and when they are blocked by chemotherapy drugs, premature ovarian failure results. Our experiment uses a transgenic mouse model to evaluate the effects of cKIT receptors on oocyte formation and development. This experiment is part of a larger effort to understand the mechanisms by which chemotherapy drugs cause premature ovarian failure.https://digitalcommons.unmc.edu/surp2021/1024/thumbnail.jp
Strategic toolkits: seniority, usage and performance in the German SME machinery and equipment sector
This paper examines the strategic tool kit, from a human resource management (HRM) perspective, in terms of usage and impact. Research to date has tended to consider usage, assuming to a certain extent that knowledge and understanding of particular tools suggest that practitioners value them. The research on which this paper is based builds upon the idea that usage indicates satisfaction, but develops the usage theme to investigate which decision-makers are actually engaged in both tool appliance and the strategic process. Of particular interest to the researchers are the educational background, age and seniority of the decision-makers. In addition, potential links with HRM and organizational performance are also explored. The context of the research, the German machinery and equipment sector, provides an insight into the industry's ability to sustain growth in face of increasing international competition. The paper calls for a greater awareness, from a human resource perspective, and utilization of strategic management practice and associated decision-making aids

The Impact of Investment Networks on Venture Capital Firm Performance: A Contingency Framework
Venture capital (VC) syndicates involve repeated transactions among partners and therefore possess network-like characteristics. Although networks provide access to important externalities, extant literature has not studied the effects of the focal firmās resource needs on performance benefits arising from different network structures. We investigate the impact of two proxies for firm-level resources, namely maturity and status, on the relationship between network cohesion and VC performance. We find that mature and high-status VCs benefit less from network cohesion. We also show that maturity and status simultaneously determine the performance effects of network cohesion
Automated Real-Time Assessment of Stay-Cable Serviceability Using Smart Sensors
The number of cable-stayed bridges being built worldwide has been increasing owing to the increasing demand for long-span bridges. As the stay-cable is one of critical load-carrying members of cable-stayed bridges, its maintenance has become a significant issue. The stay-cable has an inherently low damping ratio with high flexibility, which makes it vulnerable to vibrations owing to wind, rain, and traffic. Excessive vibration of the stay-cable can cause long-term fatigue problems in the stay-cable as well as the cable-stayed bridge. Therefore, civil engineers are required to carry out maintenance measures on stay-cables as a high priority. For the maintenance of the stay-cables, an automated real-time serviceability assessment system using wireless smart sensors was developed in this study. When the displacement of the cable in the mid-span exceeds either the upper or the lower bound provided in most bridge design codes, it is considered as a serviceability failure. The system developed in this study features embedded on-board processing, including the measurement of acceleration, estimation of displacement from measured acceleration, serviceability assessment, and monitoring through wireless communication. A series of laboratory tests were carried out to verify the performance of the developed system
