Elastic contact to a coated half-space - Effective elastic modulus and real penetration

A new approach to the contact to coated elastic materials is presented. A relatively simple numerical algorithm based on an exact integral formulation of the elastic contact of an axisymmetric indenter to a coated substrate is detailed. It provides contact force and penetration as a function of the contact radius. Computations were carried out for substrate to layer moduli ratios ranging from 0.01 to 100 and various indenter shapes. Computed equivalent moduli showed good agreement with the Gao model for mismatch ratios ranging from 0.5 to 2. Beyond this range, substantial effects of inhomogeneous strain istribution are evidenced. An empirical function is proposed to fit the equivalent modulus. More importantly, if the indenter is not flat-ended, the simple relation between contact radius and penetration valid for homogeneous substrates breaks down. If neglected, this phenomenon leads to significant errors in the evaluation of the contact radius in depth-sensing indentation on coated substrates with large elastic modulus mismatch

Elastic contact to nearly incompressible coatings -- Stiffness enhancement and elastic pile-up

We have recently proposed an efficient computation method for the frictionless linear elastic axisymmetric contact of coated bodies [A. Perriot and E. Barthel, J. Mat. Res. 19 (2004) 600]. Here we give a brief description of the approach. We also discuss implications of the results for the instrumented indentation data analysis of coated materials. Emphasis is laid on incompressible or nearly incompressible materials (Poisson ratio $\nu>0.4$): we show that the contact stiffness rises much more steeply with contact radius than for more compressible materials and significant elastic pile-up is evidenced. In addition the dependence of the penetration upon contact radius increasingly deviates from the homogeneous reference case when the Poisson ratio increases. As a result, this algorithm may be helpful in instrumented indentation data analysis on soft and nearly incompressible layers

Divine mandate or political expediency in Iphigenia at Aulis and Hecuba by Euripides

La mitología griega expone -sobre todo en el marco del ciclo troyano- el motivo del sacrificio de jóvenes doncellas como consecuencia de imperativos religiosos. Las figuras de Ifigenia y Políxena son paradigmáticas en este sentido. El dramaturgo griego Eurípides escogió este tema como motivo de tragicidad en algunas de sus obras. Así, en Ifigenia en Áulide y en Hécuba, el topos de la muerte por la patria es un eje articulador de la acción. Sin embargo, veremos que Eurípides aplica a esta temática una mirada crítica. En este trabajo intentaremos demostrar que en ambas tragedias las tensiones generadas por el poder y sus aristas revelan la compleja trama que entrelaza las motivaciones religiosas con las manipulaciones de índole política. Expresiones religiosas como los rituales, los oráculos o las advertencias divinas se vuelven sospechosas en este contexto y se cargan de significaciones ambiguas que opacan su credibilidad. Asimismo, la reflexión euripidea en torno a los comportamientos diversos de varones y mujeres (tan frecuente en sus obras), configura una distribución dicotómica en lo que respecta a las relaciones con lo divino: los varones aparentan respeto hacia lo religioso al tiempo que ocultan intenciones egoístas y ambiciosas, mientras que las mujeres evidencian en su relación con las prácticas religiosas una entrega libre de segundas intenciones.Greek mythology states, especially in the context of the Trojan cycle, the sacrifi ce of young girls because of religious imperatives. In this regard, fi gures of Iphigenia and Polyxena are paradigmatic. The Greek playwright Euripides chose this issue as a ground of tragedy in some of his works. Thus in Iphigenia at Aulis and Hecuba, the topos of death for the homeland is an articulating axis of the action. However, we will see that Euripides applies to this issue a critical view. This paper attempts to show that in both tragedies, the stresses generated by the power and its edges, reveal the complex plot that interweaves religious motivations with political manipulations. Religious expressions such as rituals, oracles or divine warnings, become suspicious in this context and are loaded with ambiguous meanings that overshadow its credibility. Also, the Euripidean thought about diff erent behaviors of men and women (so common in his works), confi gures a dichotomous distribution about relations with the divine forces: men seem to respect religion while hiding selfi sh and ambitious intentions, whereas women show religious practices free of ulterior motives.Fil: Perriot, María Celina. Hécuba, sufrimiento y saber: la mirada de Eurípides

Consideraciones acerca del significado de la vida y la inevitabilidad de la muerte, la naturaleza del hombre, los alcances de la justicia, la definición de la libertad, la felicidad, la vejez, se ven reflejados en la literatura griega desde la épica homérica, muchas veces mediante enunciados que condesan manifestaciones generales emanadas de la sabiduría popular. Esto es aún más evidente en obras de intención claramente didáctica, como los Erga de Hesíodo. Este trabajo se propone analizar los discursos de la reina troyana Hécuba en la tragedia del mismo nombre y en Troyanas de Eurípides, con el propósito de identificar las expresiones que remiten a tales temáticas. Este personaje femenino concentra en su palabra tanto el dolor por los profundos sufrimientos que ha experimentado, como la sabiduría propia de una experiencia que ha capitalizado cierta forma de aprendizaje. Se advierten en sus parlamentos numerosos enunciados que bien podrían considerarse máximas de validez general o gnomai, en consonancia con la larga tradición gnómica de la literatura griega. Al mismo tiempo, cabe destacar que en la construcción euripidea es un personaje femenino quien concentra estos saberes frente a la torpeza o necedad de sus alocutarios masculinos.Considerations about the meaning of life and the inevitability of death, human nature, the scope of justice, the definition of freedom, happiness, old age, are reflected in Greek literature from Homer's epic, many times by statements issued from popular wisdom. This is even more evident in works with a clearly didactic intention, as Erga by Hesiod. This paper analyzes the speeches of Trojan queen Hecuba, in the tragedy of the same name and in The Trojan Women by Euripides, in order to identify the terms that refer to such issues. This female character concentrates on her word both pain by deep suffering she has experienced, as the form of an own wisdom based on an experience that has capitalized some way of learning. Numerous statements that could well be considered universally valid maxims or gnomai can be found in her lines, in keeping with the long tradition of Greek gnomic literature. At the same time is worthy to note that in the euripidean construction is a female character who focuses this knowledge against the stupidity or folly of her male counterparts.Facultad de Humanidades y Ciencias de la Educació

On the plastic deformation of soda-lime glass - a Cr3+ luminescence study of densification

International audienceSilicate glasses are known to experience an anomalous plastic behavior at micron-scale: 1) they exhibit densification when flowing plastically and 2) hydrostatic pressure affects the yield point. We have previously shown (A. Perriot et al. J. Am. Ceram. Soc. 89 (2006) 596) that densification maps are useful to infer a reliable constitutive law for the plastic response of silicate glasses. It is shown here that for soda-lime glass Cr3+ luminescence microspectroscopy may be used for that purpose. We also show that the constitutive law we have previously developed for amorphous silica provides a qualitative description of normal glasses although it is unable to account for the finer details. More work is needed to quantitatively model normal-glass plasticity at the continuum length-scale

ECHAP « L’architecture des couverts végétaux : un levier pour réduire l’utilisation des fongicides ? »

L’objectif du projet ECHAP est d’identifier les possibilités de réduction de traitements fongicides via l’utilisation de l’architecture des couverts. Le projet a tout d’abord apporté des connaissances qui ont levé des verrous sur les mécanismes d’interaction. Il combine également 3 expérimentations opérationnelles au champ et un travail de modélisation du système. Les expérimentations au champ confirment l’effet de l’architecture sur le développement épidémique ainsi que l’effet marqué sur l’interception des fongicides et qui s’exprime clairement entre les variétés. Un modèle innovant et original simulant le système « architecture–épidémie-fongicide », septo3dfongi, a été développé. Il est opérationnel et permet de simuler et de raisonner des stratégies de traitements. Des critères d’évaluation multicritères des stratégies ont été également proposés

Una aproximación sociocrítica a la dicotomía campo/ciudad en Paz de Aristófanes

In this article, we examine Aristophanes’ comedy Peace, written in the 5th century BC, in an attempt to explore the way in which the core-periphery polarization is presented as the axis around which the underlying social, cultural and economic tensions revolve. Against the background of the long and devastating Peloponnesian war, Aristophanes became keenly aware of the rural-urban dichotomy, heightened by the state of belligerence and its adverse consequences for the population. Peace is particularly revealing of the concomitant tensions and allows a glimpse of the author's position regarding both the war and the various forms of exchange between both spaces. Social criticism, the theoretical framework of the article, holds that all artistic creation is social practice and, therefore, ideological production. Drawing upon this tenet, we seek to cast light on the social values that organize the fictional text, without ignoring its aesthetic specificity. A socio-critical reading of the literary text makes it possible to relate writing and ideological production of meaning.En este artículo intentamos examinar en Paz de Aristófanes, comedia griega del siglo V. a. C., el modo en que se exhibe la polarización centro-periferia como eje que vertebra las tensiones sociales, culturales y económicas subyacentes. En el contexto de la terrible y extensa Guerra del Peloponeso, Aristófanes percibió claramente la dicotomía campo ‒ ciudad, potenciada por el clima beligerante y por sus consecuencias adversas para la población. La comedia Paz ofrece signos reveladores de las tensiones concomitantes y permite vislumbrar un posicionamiento del autor tanto respecto de la guerra como de las variadas formas de intercambios entre ambos espacios. El marco teórico que brinda la Sociocrítica procura mostrar que toda creación artística es también práctica social, y por ello producción ideológica. A partir de este postulado intentamos hacer visibles los valores sociales que organizan en lo profundo el texto de ficción, sin soslayar su especificidad estética.
