An Investigation into the Efficiency of Forensic Erasure Tools for Hard Disk Mechanisms

    Get PDF
One of the common anecdotal complaints used when defending the insecure erasure of hard disks is the length of time taken to affect a secure erasure. This paper discusses results of experiments conducted with Unix/Linux based hard disk wiping software when run on various machines and hard disk mechanisms in terms of size, speed and interface. The initial research has uncovered a range of issues and factors that affect the speed of erasure of hard disk mechanisms. Some of these factors included memory configuration and CPU but not in ways that were expected. This paper includes results from contemporary ATA and the newer SATA IDE hard disk drives in use today

Use of Ultra-Thin Window Detectors for Biological Microanalysis

    Get PDF
Films and bulk samples of Nylon, gelatin, Makrofol, epoxy resin, aminoplastic resin and sodium acetate have been used as models of biological samples. It is shown that the use of ultrathin window (UTW) detectors in scanning transmission and scanning electron microsopes permits the quantitative analysis of light elements, yielding a total element analysis with hydrogen estimated by difference or guesstimated . Comparison with known concentrations or concentrations obtained by chemical analysis shows that X-ray microanalysis of sections by the peak to continuum ratio model and bulk samples by the φ(pz) model gives sufficiently accurate results for biological purposes. It is also shown that sections may be analysed by the standardless ratio model. The application of UTW detectors to total element analysis by quantitative elemental imaging is demonstrated of bulk biological samples, which have been freeze-substituted, embedded in epoxy resin and surface polished. The possibility of imaging the oxygen content of frozen-hydrated bulk tissue samples which have been surface polished is also demonstrated. This may lead to the imaging of water distribution in frozen-hydrated bulk samples of biological tissues. UTW detectors are also useful for detecting mass loss in organic samples by monitoring the decrease in oxygen counts and for detecting contamination by monitoring the increase in carbon counts. It is also shown that changes in carbon counts are good indicators of folds in sections

Avoiding plagiarism using Mendeley in Indonesian higher education setting

People who plagiarize have a complex problem. Plagiarism could be by accident, by mistake, or on purpose. This research aims at exploring the reasons for plagiarizing and the significance of citing and referencing using Mendeley to avoid plagiarism. Four Indonesian Mendeley Advisors were interviewed online using convenient sampling technique. This study revealed that reasons for plagiarizing are time restriction, laziness, and busy. The significance of citing and referencing using Mendeley to avoid plagiarism are (1) confirm, justify, and claim the issue conveyed in scientific work; (2) highlight a particular idea; (3) criticize or approve the premise of others, and (4) build argument. Mendeley usage acquaintance for scientific writing is expected to be practical tools for avoiding plagiarism and promote academic honesty in the setting of higher education. However, the role of supervisor is crucial to provide useful feedback for their students’ writing to help students avoid plagiarism. Besides, university should create comfortable academic environment by providing free seminar and workshop on academic writing to educate students avoid plagiarism

Importance of reverse logistics services as an antecedent for building a green supply chain

    Get PDF
An important antecedent for building a green supply chain are customer requirements. For the time being, however, it is unclear how the demands for providing reverse logistics services contribute to green supply chain building. The aim of the research was therefore to specify the degree of importance of reverse logistics services compared to typical services provided by the supplier during order fulfilment. Based on the survey of purchasing managers’ attitudes in 100 food companies, reverse logistics services were found to have a significant role in the portfolio of services evaluated. Return of defective goods was evaluated as the most important reverse logistics service. At the same time, it was found that the perception of the importance of the services provided is affected by the item purchased. Reverse logistics services are more important when purchasing chemicals than when purchasing the main raw material. Thus, primary research has shown that the greatest opportunity to build a green supply chain will arise when purchasing items that inherently show environmental hazards

Writing implicates conveying or communicating ideas or thoughts obliges the media either in conventional (paper and pen) or digital material (computer). This research applied a pre-experimental approach with one group pretest and post-test design. The independent variable is movie trailers as teaching media. The dependent variable is students' writing skills consist of content, organization, vocabulary, language use, and mechanics. This research indicated a significant difference in writing skills before and after the treatment using movie trailers with narrative text. There were 30 writing class students participated in this research; hence, they are homogeneous. Students seemed to be more encouraged to learn more about writing skills with enjoyable and relaxing strategies. This research signposted significant impact on the movie trailer's usage of writing skills’ improvement. Movie trailers could be used as one of the learning media to foster students' resolution in telling stories in writing based on the imagination that comes after watching. Therefore, this research recommends using a movie trailer as one strategy to improve the students' writing ability

The required competencies of project managers in metallurgical companies in the Czech Republic

This paper is focussed on the problems of competencies of project managers in the corporate practice of metallurgical companies in the Czech Republic. The authors aim to assess the requirements imposed on the position of a project manager from the point of view of the corporate management. The authors identify the basic areas playing a significant role in assessment of project managers’ competencies. They represent procedures applicable within selection of a project manager. Subsequently, the authors present outcomes of a survey, these outcomes show requirements of corporate management represented by human resource department managers of metallurgical companies in the Czech Republic when recruiting project managers in practice

Taking Mendeley as Multimedia-based Application in Academic Writing

    Get PDF
Mendeley is one of the references managers that provide web, desktop, and mobile version. This research aims at exploring the Indonesian Mendely users’ preference on Mendeley use as multimedia-based application in academic writing.  The researchers conducted survey research design to find data for deciding the obvious groups’ characteristics on certain topic or issue in a diverse group. Data on this research was taken in 2015 to explore 100 Indonesian Mendeley users’ preference on Mendeley features as web based application in academic writing. The researchers used weighted average find out rate and percentage adjusment for the influence of a binary confounder. The weighted average in this research was automatically generated by SurveyMonkey analytic. This research indicated what Mendeley features as multimedia web application for academic writing that Indonesian Mendeley users took in and out
