How can I better live personal and professional values in my interpreting work with colleagues?

This study was an attempt to improve my practice through inviting the insights of my colleagues into my work with them. Eleven hearing interpreters participated. Through interviews, I found that conferencing before the assignment and debriefing afterward elevated my colleagues’ beliefs about my embodiment of collegiality and respect for their professional autonomy, despite times my efforts fell short during assignments. Colleagues told me they thought the pre-conferencing practices I adopted as part of the research were helpful to our decision-making during assignments. My finding that pre-conferencing is helpful for teaming supports Hoza’s (2010b) claim that this standard practice is effective, but other aspects of my inquiry point to ambiguities and tough decisions in teaming. The methodology employs “multiple perspectives of knowing” to give an embodied account of teaming (Zuber-Skerritt & Fletcher, 2007, p. 417)

Oil, Power, and Discourse: How Chevron Evaded its Dues to the Indigenous Communities of the Ecuadorian Amazon

Abstract The principal objectives of this thesis were to shed lights on the backside of oil and to question the great power of big corporations. I researched why Chevron refused to acknowledge its legal obligation to remedy the complex problems it has caused in the Ecuadorian Rainforest. The catastrophes the indigenous communities have been facing are about to change as a result of grass root mobilization against Chevron. By the use of observations, discourse analysis of the media, and the use of theories from Michel Foucault, I was able to explain how Chevron has managed to escape from the terrible misconduct that took place in the region of Sucumbíos. As the observations portrayed, I experienced how two representatives from the Ecuadorian Amazon travelled far to confront Chevron CEO, John Watson, and the many supporters the two has. I additionally analyzed the role media has in this case and how its power can be greater than both Chevron and the plaintiffs’. Through the eyes of Foucault I have learned that power exists everywhere and there will always be a greater power controlling someone else’s power. I wanted this thesis to be about information around bad business of big corporations, but also about courage of a minority group. The indigenous communities have shown the world how they went against all odds and fought Chevron Corporation in a court, and won

Teacher Education Practices for Preparing Secondary-Level Preservice Teachers to Lead Whole Class Discussions

This qualitative embedded, single-case study examined the perceptions and experiences of four secondary-level preservice teachers leading whole class discussions in education classes in a private Midwestern college. Despite the research on the importance of dialogic instruction, preservice teachers are inadequately prepared to facilitate discussions. Little research exists on how to help secondary-level preservice teachers develop effective discussion skills. The significance of this study highlights an increase in secondary-level preservice teachers’ abilities to lead whole class discussion through questioning strategies correlated with Bloom’s Taxonomy (1956) and practice-based teaching methods. More research is needed on the effects of practice-based teaching methods and preparing secondary-level preservice teachers to lead discussions in real classrooms

    Valoración Ambiental de Nicaragua

    Get PDF
