Software Architecture: Managing Design for Achieving Warfighter Capability

    Get PDF
Proceedings Paper (for Acquisition Research Program)Software engineers will typically spend 50% or more of the total software development time designing software architecture, and that architecture may provide up to 80% of a modern weapon system''s functionality. Increasingly, these systems will operate within a network or other system-of-systems architecture. Obviously, the requirements driving that architectural design effort and the process for tracing requirement to functions, insight into the process, and control of the effort are critical for the successful development of the capability needed by the warfighter.Naval Postgraduate School Acquisition Research ProgramApproved for public release; distribution is unlimited

Peace and War, Repression and Liberty: Urban Autonomy and Princely Expansionism in the Medieval Holy Roman Empire

    Get PDF
The medieval Holy Roman Empire saw complex interactions of towns and their noble partners and enemies. On a regional level, working together in leagues of peace (LandfriedensbĂĽnde), urban and noble members co-operated and struggled for the preservation of peace and against the general insecurity. But, at the same time, striving to restrict urban autonomy, powerful princes successfully led an expansionist policy and consolidated their territories. Chronicles, documents from assemblies, letters and literary works show that in their relations with nobility, towns were forced to keep a dangerous balance of co-operation and confrontation. Sometimes they had to pay a high price and even had to take part in the repression of revolts

Summer Welles\u27 Mediation in Cuba, 1933

    Get PDF
This writer first became interested in the 1933 revolution in Cuba during lectures given in May, 1963 at the University of New Mexico. As part of these lectures an interesting theory was presented regarding the Communist takeover of Cuba. Briefly, this theory holds that behind every successful Communist revolution (Russia, China, Cuba, for examples) there has been an earlier attempt at social revolution which failed. In the case of Cuba, this would be the revolution of 1933, and especially the reformist provisional government of Dr. RamĂłn Grau San MartĂn. The entire process of the 1933 Cuban revolution calls for an intense, detailed study that is far outside the competence of a Master\u27s thesis. Consequently, it was decided that the scope of this thesis should be limited to a political analysis of the official mediation negotiations of Ambassador Sumner Welles (May to September, 1933) and their importance for both Cuba and the United State

The purpose of this research was to identify those factors that influence the decision of young, single, adult members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints ages 18--30 to be involved or not in the institute program; For Institutes to be effective in their charge to involve all young, single adults it would be helpful to understand why potential Institute students do one of the following: (1) Enroll in and complete an institute class. (2) Enroll in and stop attending an institute class. (3) Do not enroll in an institute class; Because the Church Educational System was asked to involve all young, single, adults in the institute program, matriculated and non-matriculated students were included in the study; A survey was administered to a random sample of 225 people in the above categories. One hundred seventy-seven surveys were completed and returned. In addition, a personal interview was conducted with two individuals in each category; It was found that young adults who enrolled and completed an institute class wanted to study the scriptures, follow the counsel of the Prophet, balance secular and spiritual learning, and prepare for the future. They had strong personal religious beliefs and applied it in their lives. Those who enrolled in and stopped attending cited conflict with school or work, and lack of time as their reasons. This group were not as strong in their personal religious beliefs and practices. Over 45% of those who did not enroll listed work and time as their main reaSon Others listed lack of desire or interest. They were not as strong in their personal religious beliefs and practices; It is recommended that an extended schedule of classes would be one way to involve more students. Student leaders could keep in contact with those who stop attending and ecclesiastic leaders could invite and encourage each young, single adult to participate in the Institute program

Cardiovascular Medical Nutrition Therapy Looking at the DASH Trials

    Get PDF
OBJECTIVE: To review the recent medical literature on the effects of the DASH diet principles of increased fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy, and decreased total and saturated fat; focusing on the intent to implement this dietary pattern to reduce hypertension, and thus to reduce cardiovascular disease. FINDINGS: The combination diet reduced systolic by 5.5 mm Hg, and diastolic by 3.0 mm Hg as compared to the control diet (P\u3c0.001 for each) (5, 7, 8). When comparing the two diet variables, the combination diet reduced systolic blood pressure 2.7 mm Hg, and diastolic 1.9 mm Hg more than the fruits-and-vegetables diet, (all with a P\u3c0.001)! The results of the DASH-sodium (DASH II), proved also to substantially lower blood pressure when used with the combination diet. CONCLUSION: Even though the DASH-sodium diet did decrease blood pressure, there is no scientific background to recommend this to all populations, and that instead of focusing attention on reducing sodium, efforts should be placed on increasing sources of micronutrients to reduce blood pressure and cardiovascular disease

ProteoClade: A taxonomic toolkit for multi-species and metaproteomic analysis

    Get PDF
We present ProteoClade, a Python toolkit that performs taxa-specific peptide assignment, protein inference, and quantitation for multi-species proteomics experiments. ProteoClade scales to hundreds of millions of protein sequences, requires minimal computational resources, and is open source, multi-platform, and accessible to non-programmers. We demonstrate its utility for processing quantitative proteomic data derived from patient-derived xenografts and its speed and scalability enable a novel de novo proteomic workflow for complex microbiota samples

Using Multinomial Logistic Models To Predict Adolescent Behavioral Risk

    Get PDF
Multinomial logistic regression was applied to data comprising 432 adolescents’ self reports of engagement in risky behaviors. Results showed that gender, intention to drop from the school, family structure, self-esteem, and emotional risk were effective predictors collectively. Three methodological issues were highlighted: (1) the use of odds ratio, (2) the absence of an extension of the Hosmer and Lemeshow test for multinomial logistic models, and (3) the missing data problem. Psychologists and educators can utilize findings to plan prevention programs, as well as to apply the versatile and effective logistic technique in psychological, educational, and health research concerning adolescents

« Trouver la paix » : l’intitulé choisi pour ce numéro de Questes est un beau titre. Depuis des siècles, « trouver la paix » est un souhait universel qui se reflète également dans des formules comme « pax vobiscum » ou dans la définition de saint Augustin que Stéphanie Richard et Irène Strobbe ont choisie comme point de départ de leur introduction. Cette définition souligne la tranquillitas ordinis qui va de la paix intérieure de l’individu jusqu’à celle du monde entier. Des idées semblables ..
