Flow Injection analysis with microdialysis probes enable minimally invasive and dynamic H2O2 measurements

This paper describes the optimization of a published flow injection analysis system coupled with microdialysis probes (MDP-FIA) for in-situ sampling and online measurements of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). By modifying the commonly used Na2CO3 buffer by addition of EDTA and a changed order in reagent injection, interfering transition metals such as Fe(II) and Fe(III) are complexed and removed from the system without interfering with the chemiluminescent reaction of the used acridinium ester and H2O2. The system was then used to monitor changes in H2O2 concentration upon microwaving seawater and filtered seawater in the presence and absence of agar

How the Shareplace Pilot Regions Deal with the Corona Crisis

The Interreg Central Europe co-funded three-year project SHAREPLACE (“Shared mobility and Regional transport integrated Planning for a better connected Central Europe”) addresses, among others, the development and implementation of new mobility services in order to enhance the existing transport network based on the current needs of travellers. These new tools and services are being developed for five pilot regions, located in Croatia, Germany, Hungary and Italy. One objective of the project is to show how a co-design approach can support the design and implementation of new mobility services. Although the situation in terms of availability and quality of services as well as strategic planning processes are quite different in all pilot regions, they all profited from using living labs and stakeholder involvement for the development and design of services. Due to COVID-19 the situation change and the pilot regions are facing new challenges. How can participation work in times of COVID-19 and social distancing? This paper shows how the SHAREPLACE pilot regions deal with the new situation and which new experiences they made

Maximum Efficiency for High Head Process Pumps –Optimizing Side Channel Pumps

    Get PDF
LectureSide channel pumps provide high pressure at relatively low flow rates. This comes along with a quite low specific speed and thus with the known disadvantage of a quite poor maximum efficiency. This paper describes the detailed analysis and optimization of a typical 1-stage side channel pump with an additional radial suction impeller by means of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. In a first step, the model was successively generated and it was obvious that it has to contain all details including suction impeller and main stage (both 360° models) as well as the pressure housing and all narrow gaps to provide useful simulation results. Numerical simulations were carried out in a stationary and transient way with scale resolving turbulence models to analyze the components in detail. Finally the CFD-simulations were validated with model tests. For the optimization process it was necessary to generate a reduced numerical model to analyze the effects of more than 300 geometry variations. The findings were then combined to establish the desired objectives. Finally the best combinations were validated again with the full numerical model. Those simulations predict a relative efficiency increase at best efficiency point (BEP) and part load 30% with respect to all given limitations like identical head curve, suction behavior and dimensions

In the centre of this paper are the Austrian philosopher Günther Anders and his written and philosophical ideas. In the first part of this paper a detailed biography of the long life of this thinker is compiled. Although some other biographies about Anders and his life can be found, the content of facts to his life in these biographies is limited and more concentrated on his philosophical thinking. Special observance in his biography is focused on the long period of his exile in France and the United States; for that reason personal documents of Anders were viewed in his archival remains, which can be found in the Austrian Literary Archive at the Austrian National Library in Vienna. The second part of this paper takes a close look at the writings of Anders. Starting from his early works in the nineteen-twenties up to his last published book from 1992, the year he passed away, his far reaching theses are analyzed – specifically with an accurate view on his understanding and meaning of history. Additionally a view on his way of thinking historically is made. For this purpose the most important published books of this thinker are used. In the third and last part of this paper two paths, which intersect repeatedly, are paced for the reason of localizing Anders and his thinking. On the one hand it is tried to show the methodical or linguistic means this philosopher used; on the other hand it is tried to subsume and classify him and his thinking amongst scientific criteria. Additionally a critical examination of the most important historical theses of this philosopher is performed

Substantial near-infrared radiation-driven photosynthesis of chlorophyll f-containing cyanobacteria in a natural habitat

© Kühl et al. Far-red absorbing chlorophylls are constitutively present as chlorophyll (Chl) d in the cyanobacterium Acaryochloris marina, or dynamically expressed by synthesis of Chl f, red-shifted phycobiliproteins and minor amounts of Chl d via far-red light photoacclimation in a range of cyanobacteria, which enables them to use near-infrared-radiation (NIR) for oxygenic photosynthesis. While the biochemistry and molecular physiology of Chl f-containing cyanobacteria has been unraveled in culture studies, their ecological significance remains unexplored and no data on their in situ activity exist. With a novel combination of hyperspectral imaging, confocal laser scanning microscopy, and nanoparticle-based O2 imaging, we demonstrate substantial NIR-driven oxygenic photosynthesis by endolithic, Chl f-containing cyanobacteria within natural beachrock biofilms that are widespread on (sub)tropical coastlines. This indicates an important role of NIR-driven oxygenic photosynthesis in primary production of endolithic and other shaded habitats
