    Leadership During Change

    Get PDF
The national education system, similar to the Kansas education system, has seen little change since the 1800s(Throckmorton, 1967). In fact, over 50 years later, there have been few changes. Children come to school around the age of five to enter kindergarten and then move through the current system by age and grade level. These children sit in rows, are addressed by the expert teacher, are given information, and are expected to memorize and regurgitate the material in a standardized testing process. Schools in Kansas predominately open their doors in August and close in May (KSDE, 2018), perpetuating the long history of an educational system that spans almost 200 years. Moving a school system away from that dynamic is hard, and it is wrought with human challenges. What change needs to occur to meet the economic needs of the future? One major challenge to creating new learning environments is the lack of leadership at the individual school and district levels to help teachers feel safe and confident in making crucial classroom instructional changes (Bush, 2008)

Molecular and Genetic Determinants of Glioma Cell Invasion.

A diffusely invasive nature is a major obstacle in treating a malignant brain tumor, "diffuse glioma", which prevents neurooncologists from surgically removing the tumor cells even in combination with chemotherapy and radiation. Recently updated classification of diffuse gliomas based on distinct genetic and epigenetic features has culminated in a multilayered diagnostic approach to combine histologic phenotypes and molecular genotypes in an integrated diagnosis. However, it is still a work in progress to decipher how the genetic aberrations contribute to the aggressive nature of gliomas including their highly invasive capacity. Here we depict a set of recent discoveries involving molecular genetic determinants of the infiltrating nature of glioma cells, especially focusing on genetic mutations in receptor tyrosine kinase pathways and metabolic reprogramming downstream of common cancer mutations. The specific biology of glioma cell invasion provides an opportunity to explore the genotype-phenotype correlation in cancer and develop novel glioma-specific therapeutic strategies for this devastating disease

Teaching Reproductive Politics and Intersectional Empathy through Ethnographic Case Studies

    Get PDF
In this critical commentary, I present feminist pedagogies developed over ten years of teaching “Cultural Politics of Reproduction” that scaffold students away from approaching reproductive experiences and politics through this register of polarization. This approach centers collaborative inquiry and critical reflection and uses ethnographic case studies to cultivate empathy. Such stance encourages students toward not only understanding that another person might make a decision that they fundamentally disagree with, but also the broader contexts shaping these decisions. Drawing on feminist scholarship focused on a range of cultural contexts, students learn to destabilize existing expectations and contrast how seemingly familiar politics take shape in unfamiliar communities. By identifying how racism, misogyny, and national politics etc. interact to shape the everyday politics of reproduction and examine how people make complicated decisions amidst stratified access, they become attuned to intersectionality in practice

A Phenomenological Study of GED Graduates Meeting College Readiness Standards at a Community College

    Get PDF
This qualitative study was designed to understand the experiences of General Educational Development (GED) graduates enrolling into a community college. Research had not been conducted to explore the experiences of GED graduates completing the 2014 version of the exam and transitioning to college. Guided by Schlossberg\u27s college transition theory and Bandura\u27s theory of self-efficacy, this phenomenological study included 11 participants who described their experiences through written narratives and interviews. Participants described their experiences of being an adult education student while preparing for the exam, the steps within the GED test preparation they considered important to matriculation toward college enrollment, and their points of view of the enrollment experience into a community college. Data analysis included analytic induction and participatory analyses for discovering patterns and clarification of statements made by the participants. Narratives, interviews, and field notes were transcribed, member checked, and reviewed for interaction, continuity, and situation prior to coding. The realization of motivation, determination, and self-efficacy, established around supporting relationships assembled during the transition to college, were common experiences among these participants. A deeper understanding of these factors for adults matriculating through GED and into college hopefully instills awareness and sparks discussion for improvements in educational support services

HOT Models in Flux: Mitochondrial Glucose Oxidation Fuels Glioblastoma Growth

Cancer cells in culture obtain ATP and biosynthetic precursors primarily by aerobic glycolysis, not by mitochondrial glucose oxidation. In this issue of Cell Metabolism, Marin-Valencia et al. (2012) demonstrate that glioblastoma, an aggressive and, in culture, highly glycolytic cancer, primarily uses glucose oxidation to meet energetic and biosynthetic demands in vivo

This study focuses on the behavior of students' academic procrastination during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aims to determine the causal factors and efforts to overcome the academic procrastination of students at SMP Negeri 6 Salatiga during the covid-19 pandemic. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach and type of research. In this study, researchers used purposive sampling (non-probability) to determine informants based on criteria. The location of this research is SMP Negeri 6 Salatiga. The research subjects consisted of one BK teacher and four students with predetermined criteria. Data collection methods used in this study were interviews and documentation. Test the validity of the data using triangulation techniques. The data analysis technique in this study uses the Miles and Huberman model. The results of this study found that 1) the factors causing students' academic procrastination during the pandemic were caused by two factors, namely internal factors and external factors. Internal factors consist of health conditions, motivation, self-efficacy, self-control, and self-awareness. Meanwhile, external factors consist of parenting patterns and environmental conditions. 2) BK teachers' efforts to overcome academic procrastination by conducting home visits, information services and consultations. Then, coordinate with homeroom teachers and subject teachers

    What do implicit measures measure?

    Get PDF
We identify several ongoing debates related to implicit measures, surveying prominent views and considerations in each debate. First, we summarize the debate regarding whether performance on implicit measures is explained by conscious or unconscious representations. Second, we discuss the cognitive structure of the operative constructs: are they associatively or propositionally structured? Third, we review debates whether performance on implicit measures reflects traits or states. Fourth, we discuss the question of whether a person’s performance on an implicit measure reflects characteristics of the person who is taking the test or characteristics of the situation in which the person is taking the test. Finally, we survey the debate about the relationship between implicit measures and (other kinds of) behavior
