Walking the Talk: Promoting Middle School Philosophy by Embracing Student Voices

    Get PDF
This practitioner perspective responds to recent scholarship calling for reinvigorating middle level education by suggesting that the purposeful inclusion of student voices in collaborative learning activities can help educators champion the academic and social growth of early adolescents. The recent practicum experience of a preservice candidate who prioritized the voices of her students illustrates the promotion of democratic education, innovation, and social justice in middle level education

The potential benefit of improving the dissemination of agricultural weather information to the Mississippi cotton farmer

The author has identified the following significant results. The potential benefit of improved dissemination of weather information to the Mississippi cotton farmer was estimated at $36,000 per 1000 acres. This is 16% of production cost of cotton in 1976. On a statewide basis, the total potential savings exceeds 100 million dollars

“I Felt All the Pangs of Exile”: Trauma and the Fight for Human Rights in the Memoirs of Nabokov, Soyinka, and Danticat

Subjectivity in memoir allows room for the manipulation of identity and the reflection of how one’s identity has been manipulated. When breaches of human dignity occur, the discourse of trauma becomes an integral part of one’s identity. How then does socioeconomic background integrate with the traumatized self? Looking at the Speak, Memory by Vladimir Nabokov as an example of a male, upper-class, immigrant memoir in relation to immigrant memoirs of different socioeconomic classes, like Wole Soyinka\u27s You Must Set Forth at Dawn: A Memoir and Edwidge Danticat’s Brother, I’m Dying, the implicit and explicit expressions of trauma within each author’s narrative and the emphasis of certain content, like grammatical and narrative structure, tone and transitions often correlate to each author’s background. As classes continue to divide, this analysis begins a conversation of how socioeconomic ideals become ingrained in the writer’s positioning of self, though the human rights narrative remains universal

Toward Diversity in Texts: Using Global Literature to Cultivate Critical Perspectives

    Get PDF
Abstract Literature study in the 21st Century should be characterized by the inclusion of global texts that afford diverse students the opportunity to engage in their literacy development through and alongside authors, characters, and storylines that represent their own linguistic and cultural traditions. In this narrative analysis, I reflect on the importance of equity-driven literature study from my perspective as a teacher educator at a Hispanic-Serving Institution in the Southwestern United States. Following an introduction to the political and institutional contexts surrounding text selection in schools and a brief review of the literature, I situate myself and my students as striving to ensure that adolescents see themselves reflected in the texts they read. I then document the pedagogical moves made by preservice teachers to introduce global literature into school curriculum, both as primary works and as supplemental bridge texts. I argue that offering multicultural literature with critical literacy components is a culturally responsive choice that invites students from all backgrounds to participate in the academic community

Improving Osteoporosis Screening Rates in a Rural Primary Care Clinic

    Get PDF
Background and Objectives: Osteoporosis related fracture rates are high yet lack of screening and education on osteoporosis remains a significant problem. The United States Preventative Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends bone mineral density testing in women ≥ 65 and in women aged 50-64, based on specific risk factors. Using a screening tool such as the simple calculated osteoporosis risk tool (SCORE) is beneficial in identifying individuals that should be referred for BMD testing. Screening for BMD using dual-energy absorptiometry (DXA) is the gold standard in predicting major fractures, allowing for timely intervention in the primary care setting. Consequently, a plan was developed using these tools to increase osteoporosis screening rates. Methods: The quality improvement project was implemented using the Donabedian model for quality care at a rural primary care clinic in the Midwestern United States. Participants included office staff and eligible patients (women ≥ 50 years of age). A process was developed to screen individuals for osteoporosis using the SCORE tool in the electronic health record (EHR). A screening score of ≥ 6 indicated the need to refer for DXA. The QI project measures included: total number of patients screened, quantity of DXA referrals, completed DXA scans, and a pre/post-implementation staff survey. Results: There was a statistically significant increase in the number of patients screened for osteoporosis risk in comparison to the pre-implementation period. Conclusions: The process for osteoporosis screening improved screening rates

Activity- and pharmacology-dependent modulation of adult neurogenesis in relation to Alzheimer’s disease
