    AbstractThis study aims to: (1) Determine student responses after participating in distance learning (PJJ). (2) Knowing the effectiveness of distance learning (PJJ) on primary school (SDN 21 Sarang Burung Danau). The research was conducted on 47 grade 6 (Six) students of SDN 21 Sarang Burung Danau, Sambas, West Kalimantan. The research was conducted for 6 (six) months, from June to November 2020. The data collection in the form of a response questionnaire with indirect communication techniques and interviews. The results show that the students' response rate with an average of each aspect was 76.32% high category, this shows that students did not experience any significant problems while following PJJ. This finding is reinforced by the results of interviews that show students' motivation and enjoyment during PJJ which enables students to adapt to current learning situations. Research has also found the effectiveness of PJJ in the effective category so that it can help students in distance learning (PJJ) or online learning.Keywords: effectivity, PJJ, SDN Sarang Burung Danau, covid 1

    A geometric and structural approach to the analysis and design of biological circuit dynamics: a theory tailored for synthetic biology

    Much of the progress in developing our ability to successfully design genetic circuits with predictable dynamics has followed the strategy of molding biological systems to fit into conceptual frameworks used in other disciplines, most notably the engineering sciences. Because biological systems have fundamental differences from systems in these other disciplines, this approach is challenging and the insights obtained from such analyses are often not framed in a biologically-intuitive way. Here, we present a new theoretical framework for analyzing the dynamics of genetic circuits that is tailored towards the unique properties associated with biological systems and experiments. Our framework approximates a complex circuit as a set of simpler circuits, which the system can transition between by saturating its various internal components. These approximations are connected to the intrinsic structure of the system, so this representation allows the analysis of dynamics which emerge solely from the system's structure. Using our framework, we analyze the presence of structural bistability in a leaky autoactivation motif and the presence of structural oscillations in the Repressilator

    Activity Theory as a lens for considering culture: A descriptive case study of a multinational company developing and supporting training around the world

    Thesis (PhD) - Indiana University, School of Education, 2006Activity Theory has often been used in the literature as a way to examine human activity, but the bulk of that work has been done in educational settings. Where it has been used in workplace environments, it has typically been used to enhance theoretical understandings of work and the humans who engage in work. It has not typically been used with an eye to advancing the business causes of the companies it has been used with. In addition, it has not been used internationally with multi-national companies. This is a shame, for with its Elements of Activity and its idea of contradiction, Activity Theory does seem to hold much promise for being able to shed light on cultural issues encountered by companies operating across national boundaries. This research presents a descriptive case study of a company using Activity Theory to shed light on the potential cultural conflicts the company faced as it designed and developed training interventions for use in its affiliates around the globe. The research focused on being practical--on creating tools the company could use, and on detailing the methodology sufficiently that other instructional designers could employ Activity Theory in a similar way in other situations which they felt were relevant. Although Activity Theory was not completely internalized by the company, with the assistance of a facilitator coaching them in its use the company was able to use the theory to avoid cultural conflicts, enhance understandings about cultural conflicts which did occur, debrief cross-cultural training interventions, identify improvements for future training interventions, and publicly share internally held cultural knowledge and beliefs

    They Cannot Catch Guerrillas in the Mountains Any More Than a Cow Can Catch Fleas : Guerrilla Warfare in Western Virginia, 1861-1865

    The American Civil War unleashed great violence and chaos in the western mountains of Virginia. The guerrilla warfare there between Unionists and secessionists remained bitter throughout the war. No historical study has considered the entirety of pre-war western Virginia during the time it underwent a unique civil war within the context of the national struggle from 1861-1865. This study supports findings from studies of other areas of Appalachia that seek to explain the prevalence of such conflict in the mountains, challenges the myth of a Union Appalachia during the war, offers the backdrop for the political wrangling on both state and national levels that culminated in the creation of the state of West Virginia, and fills an important gap in the historiography of Civil War Virginia. Rather than using the traditional approach of studying irregular warfare according to the types of fighters involved, western Virginia guerrillas and their impact on their communities are best considered according to their motives for involvement: military strategy, personal advancement, or self-preservation. Although western Virginia guerrillas did not impact the ultimate direction of the war, they did establish a culture of violence that lingered in the area well after the Civil War ended

    Both Fyodor Dostoevsky and Flannery O’Connor used the grotesque to portray their beliefs about human nature. Both believed that mystery is a crucial element of truth and humanity’s understanding is limited. Although they employed the grotesque differently, the similarities of their style stem from the similarities of their beliefs. O’Connor often referred to Dostoevsky’s artistry and his theology, and she was influenced by both. A comparison of Ivan Karamazov in Dostoevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov and Hazel Motes in O’Connor’s Wise Blood reveals the similarities in what each author believed about humanity’s capability to understand truth. What both authors believed about human nature, and the limitations of every aspect of humanity, particularly human reason, led to their use of the grotesque

Virtual Machine Introspection (VMI) is one of the technologies that has emerged to provide security for virtual environments by examining and then interpreting the state of an active Virtual Machine (VM). VMI has seen use in systems administration, digital forensics, intrusion detection, and honeypots. As with any technology, VMI has both productive uses as well as harmful uses. The research presented in this dissertation aims to enable a guest VM to determine if it is under examination by an external VMI agent.     Alexander Pope places antithetical terms in heroic couplets, emphasizing the relationship between opposing terms and holding them in a productive tension that prevents a misuse or perversion of each term. Such tension is made possible by the framework within which an antithesis exists: Nature serves as a whole that encompasses both parts, reinforcing the proper boundaries of each term but insisting on a relationship between them. Pope\u27s view of antithesis determined his stance on several key eighteenth century debates and was reflected in his taste in both poetry and gardening. The external antitheses he recognized and affirmed in nature were mirrored by internal antitheses in man\u27s being, particularly his reason and imagination. Pope affirmed the proper, tempered use of each half of an antithesis, and recognized that a harmony, rather than a synthesis, is cultivated by a perpetual antithetical relationship between them. His acceptance of paradoxical truths is reflected in his affirmation of antithetical ideas. The productive coexistence of such ideas, the harmony that results, and man\u27s inability to fully understand either through reason, all indicate the existence of mystery

    PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The recent rediscovery of functional cold activated brown adipose tissue (BAT) in adult humans fuelled an uprise in studies on this tissue. This review focuses on the contribution of human BAT to nonshivering thermogenesis and on factors other than cold that activate BAT. RECENT FINDINGS: Earlier studies revealed BAT activity using a glucose tracer for positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) scanning. Several recent studies, using a mix of tracers and PET/CT dynamic scanning showed that human brown fat is metabolically active and related to the perfusion of the tissue. The actual contribution of BAT to nonshivering thermogenesis still needs to be explored.The last few years, several new factors that activate human BAT have been described. These studies also highlight the plasticity of brown and white adipose tissue. Some of these factors may have pharmacological significance. SUMMARY: New PET/CT studies provide information on oxidative human BAT metabolism in vivo. This new information in combination with the study on factors activating BAT are promising with respect to management of obesity and related disorders
