Additives That Prevent Or Reverse Cathode Aging In Drift Chambers With Helium-Isobutane Gas

Noise and Malter breakdown have been studied at high rates in a test chamber having the same cell structure and gas as in the BaBar drift chamber. The chamber was first damaged by exposing it to a high source level at an elevated high voltage, until its operating current at normal voltages was below 0.5nA/cm. Additives such as water or alcohol allowed the damaged chamber to operate at 25 nA/cm, but when the additive was removed the operating point reverted to the original low value. However with 0.02% to 0.05% oxygen or 5% carbon dioxide the chamber could operate at more than 25 nA/cm, and continued to operate at this level even after the additive was removed. This shows for the first time that running with an O2 or CO2 additive at high ionisation levels can cure a damaged chamber from breakdown problems.Comment: There were typos: 0.2%-0.5% oxygen should be 0.02%-0.05% oxygen. Values in the Table were O

Fieldwork monitoring in the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE)

"The article summarizes how monitoring of fieldwork was conducted in the fourth wave of the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) by using the conceptual framework of total survey error as a guiding principle. I describe the technological and governance-related background of monitoring and managing fieldwork in a tiered principal-agent environment of a cross-national, longitudinal survey operation. Findings on selected indicators are presented as they were utilized in fortnightly reports to contracted survey agencies during the entire data collection period. Reporting was intended to stimulate corrective action by contracted for-profit survey businesses. I summarize our experience of trying to influence an on-going cross-cultural data collection operation and discuss implications for survey management with an emphasis on multi-national surveys

The Flora of Citico Creek Wilderness Study Area, Cherokee National Forest, Monroe County, Tennessee

Citico Creek Wilderness Study Area, located entirely within the Cherokee National Forest, Monroe County, Tennessee, is under consideration for inclusion in the National Wilderness System. A study of the vascular flora of this 6,716 hectare area was conducted between March, 1976 and September, 1977. A total of 536 taxa, including 259 county records, was determined. This represents approximately 23% of the state flora. Pertinent literature on the history, climate, geology, soils, and vegetation of the area is summarized. Particular note has been made of rare plants, with seven on the Tennessee list being found. One of these, Juncus gymnocarpus Coville, is reported for the first time in Tennessee outside the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Plants found in the study area and listed on the rare plant lists of neighboring states are also discussed

Avoiding Farm Foreclosure through Mediation of Agricultural Loan Disputes: An Overview of State and Federal Legislation

The use of credit played a major role in the growth of agricultural productivity in the United States.\u27 In recent years, however, the financial distress faced by farmers resulted in a record number of farm foreclosures and bank closures in agricultural states. 2 Farm losses are concentrated in the mid-size farms, indicating that the owner-operated farm has been hit the hardest.3 The attendant social and economic turmoil faced by families and communities dependant on agriculture focused attention on the responsibility of federal and state government in preventing further losses within the families and communities that comprise the agricultural sector
