Effects of SBAR Utilization by Healthcare Providers on Patient Outcomes: A Systematic Review of the Literature

    Get PDF
Problem: Communication failures have been identified as a leading cause of sentinel events. Communication failures have been shown to lead to patient management errors which include falls risk, medication administration mis-management or error, and delay in patient treatment. Studies show that SBAR (Situation-Background-Assessment-Recommendation), a structured communication tool, helps guide communication among healthcare professionals and when used, can reduce the incidence of sentinel events and improve patient health outcomes. Purpose: The purpose of this systematic review was to assess the literature evaluating the effectiveness of SBAR utilization by healthcare providers on patient health outcomes. Search Strategy: The Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Cochrane Library Databases, PubMed, and non-indexed journals were searched for studies published from 2008 to 2019. Articles in English, with keywords SBAR, communication, patient/health outcomes, nurse, physician/doctor, interprofessional healthcare team or patient safety were eligible for inclusion. Studies conducted outside of inpatient settings or in simulated settings, and studies that did not measure patient outcomes were excluded. Results of Literature Search: Out of 570 articles identified, eight articles met the inclusion criteria. Synthesis of Evidence: Outcomes measured described in the articles include collaboration and perception of communication (n=7), incident reports related to poor communication (n=3), unplanned intensive care unit (ICU) admissions (n=1), decrease in unexpected deaths (n=1), and Foley removal compliance (n=1). Two overarching themes were noted: perception of collaboration and patient outcomes. There were significant improvements in perception of collaboration and communication, patient safety, number of incident reports, unexpected deaths, readmission rates, and Foley catheter removal compliance. Although one study noted a decrease in near-miss reporting and in the number of major falls, there was an overall increase in falls. Implications for Practice: SBAR utilization among healthcare providers was found to have positive patient health outcomes as a result of clear, concise communication. Being at the forefront of patient care, registered nurses need to be educated in and encouraged to implement SBAR as a structured communication tool when speaking with healthcare professionals. No embargoAcademic Major: Nursin

    Who Owns the Virtual Items?

Do you WoW? Because millions of people around the world do! Due to this increased traffic, virtual wealth amassed in MMORPGs are intersecting in our real world in unexpected ways. Virtual goods have real-life values and are traded in real-life markets. However, the market for trading in virtual items is highly inefficient because society has not created property rights for virtual items. This lack of regulation has a detrimental effect not just the market for virtual items, but actually the market for MMORPGs. Assuming we want to promote the production of MMORPGs as a market, society requires a set of distinct property rules to decrease the inefficiencies in the virtual market. In creating these regulation, we may be able to take cues from intellectual property laws, as many of the problems surrounding virtual goods are akin to intellectual property

    TANF and Higher Education

Welfare reforms in 1996 created the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families Block Grant program (TANF). Under the assumption that a job will provide recipients with a path to self-sufficiency, this program focuses primarily on putting them to work. Unfortunately, this work-first focus has not resulted in a path out of poverty for the majority of recipients. New York State must reform its TANF program to provide relevant education and training for its recipients, equipping them with the tools they need to break the cycle of poverty and maintain a self-sufficient life

From the Shadows: Setting as an Expression of Character Development in the Epic Fantasy Genre

    Get PDF
Epic fantasy is a genre defined by its setting. It offers writers the opportunity to be incredibly specific with the way setting contributes to the overall story, specifically as an aid character development. In order to successfully use setting to support character development, the writer must understand what preconceptions with which the reader enters the epic fantasy genre and what purpose setting plays in the overarching story world. The writer must determine what setting elements to include and, just as importantly, which to leave out. Finally, because setting is such an abstract component of writing, it is useful not only to discuss generalities that apply to all writers but to examine a specific example in order to better understand how worldbuilding can be implemented in a way that feels natural to the reader

Sports Sponsorship As A Tool For Customer Engagement

This paper reports the findings from a series of semi-structured interviews with Sponsorship Managers in major UK-based sports sponsors. The key theme explored is the use of sponsorship leverage strategies as a means of deepening engagement with both existing and potential customers. Therefore, this study draws on literature from the field of customer engagement, relating this to sponsorship objectives, in order to assess the extent to which sponsors are actively seeking to engage customers through their sponsorship activities. Customer engagement and building an affinity with brands are cited as objectives now being pursued by sponsors. The findings suggest that sponsorship is increasingly being used by brands as a springboard for wider marketing communications activity, including social media and event-based customer experiences. Sponsorship success is not guaranteed simply by buying the rights to associate with a sporting property, but rather, is maximised when creatively activated to engage customers interactively, as opposed to the one-way communication medium of advertising. The evidence provided highlights examples of good practice among sponsors in a growing area of interest. Therefore, a wider ranging study of the use of event-based experiences and social media as sponsorship leverage strategies is proposed as an area for future research
