In their March 4, 2015 interview with Rebecca Masters and John Gaston, Gayle and Joe Lanford detail their work with Anthony DiGiorgio and involvement with Winthrop. In particular, Gayle recalls her time as an undergraduate student from 1958-1962 navigating the rules and regulations of Winthrop. Joe shares his work bridging the gap between Winthrop and the City of Rock Hill and describes his role in design of Hardin Family Gardens at Winthrop. Comment on "Towards a large deviation theory for strongly correlated systems"

I comment on a recent paper by Ruiz and Tsallis [Phys. Lett. A 376, 2451 (2012)] claiming to have found a '$q$-exponential' generalization of the large deviation principle for strongly correlated random variables. I show that the basic scaling results that they find numerically can be reproduced with a simple example involving independent random variables, and are not specifically related to the $q$-exponential function. In fact, identical scaling results can be obtained with any other power-law deformations of the exponential. Thus their results do not conclusively support their claim of a $q$-exponential generalization of the large deviation principle.Comment: Comment, 3 pages, 2 figure

The Future’s So Bright: A Business Plan and Market Research Analysis of Fraze

This thesis is an overview of the creation and operation of Lindy and Liz, LLC dba Fraze. Fraze is an online boutique specializing in custom, beaded sunglasses. This thesis contains details of the founding, operation, and future of the business. The following business plan will give insights to marketing strategies, target audience demographics, and sourcing procedures. Accompanying this business plan is market research relevant to the target market of Fraze. Part I details secondary research about the effects of social media on this target market and their consumption habits. It also contains insights about the products and marketing techniques most likely to reach them. Part III contains a survey conducted to gauge attitudes about social media and consumption habits from Fraze’s target market. As social media becomes more and more commonplace, it influences the kinds of things people want to buy and the way they use them. Understanding this target market’s perceptions about the role of social media and product consumption will help develop productive marketing strategies and new ways to offer value through products. Additionally, this thesis includes a financial breakdown of Fraze’s operations since 2018 as well as forecasts for the next few years of growth. This growth is expected as a result of the co-founders graduating and working on the business full time as well as finalization of outsourced bulk production. These factors should allow for more dramatic growth over the next few years

The Herbal Supplement Market in the United States: A Look at St. John\u27s Wort

Herbal supplements have become increasingly popular in United States during the past decade. This trend begs the question: why are so many people turning to supplements? The increased use of herbal supplementation appears to stem from a public demand for changes in health care. This paper will focus on the regulations placed on the supplement market and the impact that supplementation has on patient care. To illustrate these points, St. John\u27s Wort (SJW) will be examined in detail. Currently regulation in the United States comes from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and voluntary organizations within the supplement industry, such as the United States Pharmacopoeia (USP). To many health care providers, these measures do not adequately ensure the safety and efficacy of supplements. Many patients feel that practitioners of conventional medicine do not accept herbal supplements as valid treatment options. Failure to inform a treating physician of supplement use can decrease the effectiveness and safety of total care. All herbal medicines contain more than one active ingredient. Current research lacks necessary information needed to understand how these active ingredients interact with other supplemental and pharmacological preparations. Research conducted on SJW shows that these interactions have severe impact on the quality of overall patient care. The concerns surrounding the herbal industry are profound. Most can be resolved with more research and better regulation

Potential Transportation Improvements and Land Use Impacts in the Elysian Fields Corridor

This study examines potential transportation improvements in the Elysian Fields Avenue Corridor, and the benefit that these improvements may produce. Data for the study area are compiled and analyzed. Conceptual plans for the implementation of different transit technology alternatives were developed and assessed in terms of user benefits, cost, potential land use impacts, potential economic impacts, and feasibility. Case studies and relevant literature are reviewed. The intent of this thesis is to provide an overview of the study area prior and subsequent to Hurricane Katrina, develop plans for the implementation of transit alternatives in the Elysian Fields Avenue Corridor, and assess potential costs and benefits of the different alternatives developed

Interview with Lanford Brackett

In his October 9, 2009 interview with Anna Douglas, Lanford Brackett describes his assignment overseas in Samoa. Brackett also shares the story of how he won the Silver Star medal and the recognition he received afterward. Brackett concludes his interview with how he spent his leave time and confronting rations on the home front.
