    The evolution of the CIO profile: Evidence in Chile

    The great and dynamic possibilities offered by the information technologies (IT) impose new challenges to the organizations. The new capabilities of IT demand that the skills and abilities of the people in charge of the technological management evolve accordingly. In this context we are intrigued by what is the evolution of the Chief Information Officer (CIO) that endows him/her with the capacity to face such challenges? Are there patterns in the evolution of the CIO profile? To answer these questions we integrated the definitions in the literature for the ideal CIO profile with the academic programs of prestigious universities in a conceptual map. Then we interviewed 26 CIOs working in Chile to contrast their profiles with the conceptual map. From the literature review we found several prescriptive features regarding the profile and role of the CIO in modern organizations. Differences were found between the ideal role and the evolutionary status of Chilean CIOs. In spite of the differences, we found patterns for the evolution of the profile that allowed us to propose hypotheses and recommendations for the evolution of Chilean CIOs. Finally, we believe that this paper offers a powerful diagnose of the CIO profile to be used by organizations, IT professionals and universities to set professional and academic paths for success in the IT leading position

    Catholic high schools are among the most effective educational environments in the United States. Often celebrated as comprehensive and college preparatory, the typical Catholic high school boasts of its graduation rate, percentage of college-bound seniors, National Merit finalists, athletic prowess, and scholarship awards. This article pursues a relatively new theme for most Catholic high schools: creating an environment responsive to the needs of diverse learners. Following a school-within-a-school model, one Catholic high school in the Midwest designed and implemented a program to serve students with special needs. Their insights, struggles, and vision form the basis of this article which chronicles a success story worthy of replication

    A bibliometric analysis of the first twenty years of soft computing

Motivated by this anniversary, this article develops a bibliometric analysis of the journal in order to identify the leading trends of the journal in terms of publications and citations. The work considers several issues including the leading authors, institutions and countries. The study also uses a software to develop a graphical analysis. The results show a significant increase of the journal during the last years that has consolidated the journal as a leading one in the field

    Neoadjuvant immunotherapy in gastrointestinal cancers - The new standard of care?

    The development of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) offers novel treatment possibilities for solid cancers, with the crucial benefit of providing higher cure rates. These agents have become part of standard treatments in the metastatic and adjuvant setting for select cancers, such as melanoma, non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) or urological malignancies. Currently, there is ample clinical interest in employing ICI in a neoadjuvant setting with a curative intent. This approach is especially supported by the scientific rationale that ICI primarily stimulate the host immune system to eradicate tumor cells, rather than being inherently cytotoxic. Aside from tumor downstaging, neoadjuvant immunotherapy offers the potential of an in situ cancer vaccination, leading to a systemic adjuvant immunological effect after tumor resection. Moreover, preclinical data clearly demonstrate a synergistic effect of ICI with radiotherapy (RT), chemoradiotherapy (CRT) or chemotherapy (ChT). This review harmonizes preclinical concepts with real world data (RWD) in the field of neoadjuvant ICI in gastrointestinal (GI) cancers and discusses their limitations. We believe this is a crucial approach, since up to now, neoadjuvant strategies have been primarily developed by clinicians, whereas the advances in immunotherapy primarily originate from preclinical research. Currently there is limited published data on neoadjuvant ICI in GI cancers, even though neoadjuvant treatments including RT, CRT or ChT are frequently employed in locally advanced/oligometastatic GI cancers (i.e. rectal, pancreatic, esophagus, stomach, etc.). Utilizing established therapies in combination with ICI provides an abundance of opportunities for innovative treatment regimens to further improve survival rates

    Two-step implantation of gold into graphene

    As a one-atom thick, mechanically strong, and chemically stable material with unique electronic properties, graphene can serve as the basis for a large number of applications. One way to tailor its properties is the controlled introduction of covalently bound heteroatoms into the lattice. In this study, we demonstrate efficient implantation of individual gold atoms into graphene up to a concentration of 1.7 x 10(11) atoms cm(-2) via a two-step low-energy ion implantation technique that overcomes the limitation posed by momentum conservation on the mass of the implanted species. Atomic resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy imaging and electron energy-loss spectroscopy reveal gold atoms occupying double vacancy sites in the graphene lattice. The covalently bound gold atoms can sustain intense electron irradiation at 60 kV during the microscopy experiments. At best, only limited indication of plasmonic enhancement is observed. The method demonstrated here can be used to introduce a controlled concentration of gold atoms into graphene, and should also work for other heavier elements with similar electronic structure.Peer reviewe

    Agilicious: Open-source and open-hardware agile quadrotor for vision-based flight

    Autonomous, agile quadrotor flight raises fundamental challenges for robotics research in terms of perception, planning, learning, and control. A versatile and standardized platform is needed to accelerate research and let practitioners focus on the core problems. To this end, we present Agilicious, a codesigned hardware and software framework tailored to autonomous, agile quadrotor flight. It is completely open source and open hardware and supports both model-based and neural network–based controllers. Also, it provides high thrust-to-weight and torque-to-inertia ratios for agility, onboard vision sensors, graphics processing unit (GPU)–accelerated compute hardware for real-time perception and neural network inference, a real-time flight controller, and a versatile software stack. In contrast to existing frameworks, Agilicious offers a unique combination of flexible software stack and high-performance hardware. We compare Agilicious with prior works and demonstrate it on different agile tasks, using both model-based and neural network–based controllers. Our demonstrators include trajectory tracking at up to 5g and 70 kilometers per hour in a motion capture system, and vision-based acrobatic flight and obstacle avoidance in both structured and unstructured environments using solely onboard perception. Last, we demonstrate its use for hardware-in-the-loop simulation in virtual reality environments. Because of its versatility, we believe that Agilicious supports the next generation of scientific and industrial quadrotor research

    DNA damage predicts prognosis and treatment response in colorectal liver metastases superior to immunogenic cell death and T cells

    Preclinical models indicate that DNA damage induces type I interferon (IFN), which is crucial for the induction of an anti-tumor immune response. In human cancers, however, the association between DNA damage and an immunogenic cell death (ICD), including the release and sensing of danger signals, the subsequent ER stress response and a functional IFN system, is less clear. Methods: Neoadjuvant-treated colorectal liver metastases (CLM) patients, undergoing liver resection in with a curative intent, were retrospectively enrolled in this study (n=33). DNA damage (gammaH2AX), RNA and DNA sensors (RIG-I, DDX41, cGAS, STING), ER stress response (p-PKR, p-eIF2alpha, CALR), type I and type II IFN- induced proteins (MxA, GBP1), mature dendritic cells (CD208), and cytotoxic and memory T cells (CD3, CD8, CD45RO) were investigated by an immunohistochemistry whole-slide tissue scanning approach and further correlated with recurrence-free survival (RFS), overall survival (OS), radiographic and pathologic therapy response. Results: gammaH2AX is a negative prognostic marker for RFS (HR 1.32, 95% CI 1.04-1.69, p=0.023) and OS (HR 1.61, 95% CI 1.23-2.11, p<0.001). A model comprising of DDX41, STING and p-PKR predicts radiographic therapy response (AUC=0.785, p=0.002). gammaH2AX predicts prognosis superior to the prognostic value of CD8. CALR positively correlates with GBP1, CD8 and cGAS. A model consisting of gammaH2AX, p-eIF2alpha, DDX41, cGAS, CD208 and CD45RO predicts pathological therapy response (AUC=0.944, p<0.001). Conclusion: In contrast to preclinical models, DNA damage inversely correlated with ICD and its associated T cell infiltrate and potentially serves as a therapeutic target in CLM
