A fractional representation approach to the robust regulation problem for MIMO systems
The aim of this paper is in developing unifying frequency domain theory for
robust regulation of MIMO systems. The main theoretical results achieved are a
new formulation of the internal model principle, solvability conditions for the
robust regulation problem, and a parametrization of all robustly regulating
controllers. The main results are formulated with minimal assumptions and
without using coprime factorizations thus guaranteeing applicability with a
very general class of systems. In addition to theoretical results, the design
of robust controllers is addressed. The results are illustrated by two examples
involving a delay and a heat equation.Comment: 23 pages, 3 figures, submitted to International Journal of Robust and

Exchange rate volatility, macro announcements and the choice of intraday seasonality filtering method
Filtering intraday seasonality in volatility is crucial for using high frequency data in econometric analysis. This paper studies the effects of filtering on statistical inference concerning the impact of news on exchange rate volatility. The properties of different methods are studied using a 5-minute frequency USD/EUR data set and simulated returns. The simulation results suggest that all the methods tend to produce downward-biased estimates of news coefficients, some more than others. The study supports the Flexible Fourier Form method as the best for seasonality filtering.high-frequency; volatility; macro announcements; seasonality
A fractional representation approach to the robust regulation problem for SISO systems
The purpose of this article is to develop a new approach to the robust
regulation problem for plants which do not necessarily admit coprime
factorizations. The approach is purely algebraic and allows us dealing with a
very general class of systems in a unique simple framework. We formulate the
famous internal model principle in a form suitable for plants defined by
fractional representations which are not necessarily coprime factorizations. By
using the internal model principle, we are able to give necessary and
sufficient solvability conditions for the robust regulation problem and to
parameterize all robustly regulating controllers.Comment: 13 pages, 1 figure, to appear in Systems & Control Letter
Asymmetric News Effects on Volatility : Good vs. Bad News in Good vs. Bad Times
We study the impact of positive and negative macroeconomic US and European news announcements in different phases of the business cycle on the highfrequency volatility of the EUR/USD exchange rate. The results suggest that in general bad news increases volatility more than good news. The news effects also depend on the state of the economy: bad news increases volatility more in good times than in bad times, while there is no difference between the volatility effects of good news in bad and good times
The Relevance of Accuracy for the Impact of Macroeconomic News on Volatility
We study whether the accuracy of news announcements matters for the impact of news on exchange rate volatility. We use high-frequency EUR/USD returns and releases of 20 US macroeconomic indicators, and measure the precision of news in three different ways. When the precision is defined by the size of the first revision of the previous month's figure, we find that precise news increases volatility significantly more than imprecise news. Also, news on indicators that are in general more precise increase volatility more than news on typically imprecise indicators. Finally, we use real time data to measure the 'true' precision of news and find that the size of the first revision of the previous month's figure is a reasonable signal of 'true' precision.volatility; exchange rates; macroeconomic announcements; high-frequency data
Aluksi artikkelissa esitellään, mitä avoin julkaiseminen on.

Pienten runkojen korjuun kannattavuus Tornator Oyj:n joukkokäsittelyhakkuussa
Tutkimustulosten perusteella valtaosassa tapauksista pienin kannattava ensiharvennuksilla korjattava läpimitta on 8 cm. Usage and demand for wood energy continues to grow as a result of increased use of renewable energy sources. Therefore, harvesting of energy wood has changed towards a more to mechanized direction.
The goals of this study were to determine the indicative limits for harvest operators and what is the smallest wood diameter at breast height is that is profitable to collect at thin-ning sites. This research was aimed to calculate profitability of thinning at cutting sites of different sturdiness. Another purpose of this study was to find out indicative diameter limits at breast height for forest workers for pre-clearance at the first thinning sites.
The research was based on a case study. Instead of large data, the study focused on a few cases profoundly. The study was carried out by using a theoretical diameter distri-bution and the results were based on it. The study also compared actual diameter dis-tribution. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of harvesting small trees in a stand marked for cutting and how it affects the stand’s sturdiness, yield of wood and cost of harvesting.
On the basis of the results of this research, it can be concluded that the smallest profit-able harvested tree diameter is 8 cm at breast height. Harvesting trees smaller than that did not yield enough wood to cover harvesting costs. There were no significant differ-ences in profitability when harvested trees were between 7 and 9 cm at breast height
