The paper describes the established practice of news exchange during the English language classes among the Information Technologies students at the National Technical University of Ukraine. In the situation when professional English of the students comes into a certain conflict with the ability to communicate with the real-life world, the experience of sharing world news appears to be a reliable instrument of enhancing the overall linguistic competence. Effectiveness of this practice can be better understood through the analysis of the psychological and methodological aspects of the method alongside with the results of the survey conducted among the students.Статья описывает разработанную методику обмена новостями во время занятий английским языком студентов специальности «Информационные технологии» Национального технического университета Украины. The capacitated transshipment location problem with stochastic handling utilities at the facilities

The problem consists in finding a transshipment facilities location that maximizes the total net utility when the handling utilities at the facilities are stochastic variables, under supply, demand, and lower and upper capacity constraints. The total net utility is given by the expected total shipping utility minus the total fixed cost of the located facilities. Shipping utilities are given by a deterministic utility for shipping freight from origins to destinations via transshipment facilities plus a stochastic handling utility at the facilities, whose probability distribution is unknown. After giving the stochastic model, by means of some results of the extreme values theory, the probability distribution of the maximum stochastic utilities is derived and the expected value of the optimum of the stochastic model is found. An efficient heuristics for solving real-life instances is also given. Computational results show a very good performance of the proposed methods both in terms of accuracy and efficienc

Energy-Efficient Building Retrofits: An Assessment of Regulatory Proposals under Uncertainty

    Get PDF
Improving energy efficiency in European Union buildings will require retrofitting much of the existing stock due to limited new construction opportunities. Given uncertainty in energy prices and technology costs stemming from deregulation, a stochastic optimisation framework is desirable for long-term decision support. We synthesise treatment of uncertainty and risk management to obtain insights about the impact of retrofits on energy consumption, costs, CO2 emissions, and risk at real buildings in Austria and Spain. The optimal strategy for the Spanish site is to invest in photovoltaic and solar thermal technologies. This lowers expected costs by 8.5% and reduces expected primary energy consumption and CO2 emissions by 20% relative to using existing equipment. By limiting exposure to volatile energy prices, the strategy also yields a nearly 10% reduction in risk. We obtain similar results also for the Austrian site. Via this framework, tradeoffs among competing objectives and the effectiveness of proposed regulation may be assessed. Specifically, we find that more stringent restrictions on energy efficiency are economically viable if regulation also facilitates enhanced operational decision support for buildings. Indeed, primary energy consumption can be lowered only through more on-site generation such as combined heat and power, which is more complex for building managers to deploy

The impact of design uncertainty in engineer-to-order project planning

    Get PDF
A major driver of planning complexity in engineer-to-order (ETO) projects is design uncertainty far into the engineering and production processes. This leads to uncertainty in technical information and will typically lead to a revision of parts of the project network itself. Hence, this uncertainty is different from standard task completion uncertainty. We build a stochastic program to draw attention to, and analyse, the engineering-design planning problem, and in particular, to understand what role design flexibility plays in hedging against such uncertainty. The purpose is not to devise a general stochastic dynamic model to be used in practice, but to demonstrate by the use of small model instances how design flexibility actually adds value to a project and what, exactly, it is that produces this value. This will help us understand better where and when to develop flexibility and buffers, even when not actually solving stochastic models.acceptedVersio

    Strategic Recommendations For Sherwin Williams

    Get PDF
Our project objective was to provide Sherwin Williams with a comprehensive and well researched recommendation to aid recruitment efforts for their Management Trainee Program, as well as increase employee retention. Our team’s primary research was centered around benchmarking Sherwin Williams’ business related practices with those of similar retail companies and employees. Specifically, the research was focused on company culture, training and support, employee referrals, and treatment of part-time employees of the different organizations. To complete the benchmarking effectively, our team created two variations of a survey design to capture the necessary feedback and data. After analyzing our primary research and referring back to our secondary research, we focused our recommendations on increasing Sherwin’s corporate reputation to prospective new hires by utilizing and embracing their employer brand image. To better communicate their employer brand image, they will need to be interacting in a more communicative and engaging manner on social media. Our main recommendation for Sherwin Williams is to create employee testimonial videos that showcase their culture, and how much employees value their jobs at Sherwin. We also recommended that Sherwin Williams engage more with potential applicants on social media, while utilizing a company-wide mindset
