Going with the flow?: the medical school pipeline and advising premedical African American students on predominantly white campuses

Over the past two decades, federal agencies and health-related professional associations have launched national movements to recruit people from populations that are underrepresented in medicine for the health professions. While this recruitment effort showed substantial results initially, recent occurrences have impeded the growth. Relevant historical events, current trends of low African American enrollment in medical school, and existing research on diverse student experiences have indicated a critical need for effective academic advising for premedical African American students attending predominantly white undergraduate institutions. Using mixed methods, this study investigated the premedical advising that is being offered to African American students on predominantly white campuses. Results indicated that advisors considered the larger societal and institutional contexts of advising African American premedical students in a variety of ways including the positive impact of African American physicians on the larger community, the influence of affirmative action on the medical school application process, and the adversity some African American students face on predominantly white campuses. Most advisors, however, did not directly use this information when advising African American students. Some advisors considered the race and/or ethnicity of their advisees while others perceived such consideration as unethical behavior and therefore utilized a race-neutral advising approach. The utilization of qualitative and quantitative approaches revealed divergent viewpoints regarding confidence in and comfort with advising African American premedical students. While the majority of advisors believed they had the potential to play a significant role in increasing African American enrollment in medical school, findings from this study raise questions regarding who is ultimately responsible. Results stand to inform the practice of advising diverse populations of students across disciplines

Forecasting Volcanic Activity Using An Event Tree Analysis System And Logistic Regression

    Get PDF
Forecasts of short term volcanic activity are generated using an event tree process that is driven by a set of empirical statistical models derived through logistic regression. Each of the logistic models are constructed from a sparse and geographically diverse dataset that was assembled from a collection of historic volcanic unrest episodes. The dataset consists of monitoring measurements (e.g. seismic), source modeling results, and historic eruption information. Incorporating this data into a single set of models provides a simple mechanism for simultaneously accounting for the geophysical changes occurring within the volcano and the historic behavior of analog volcanoes. A bootstrapping analysis of the training dataset allowed for the estimation of robust logistic model coefficients. Probabilities generated from the logistic models increase with positive modeling results, escalating seismicity, and high eruption frequency. The cross validation process produced a series of receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves with areas ranging between 0.78 - 0.81, which indicate the algorithm has good predictive capabilities. In addition, ROC curves also allowed for the determination of a false positive rate and optimum detection threshold for each stage of the algorithm. The results demonstrate the logistic models are highly transportable and can compete with, and in some cases outperform, non-transportable empirical models trained with site specific information. The incorporation of source modeling results into the event tree’s decision making process has begun the transition of volcano monitoring applications from simple mechanized pattern recognition algorithms to a physical model based forecasting system

Nanosecond compressive fluorescence lifetime microscopy imaging via the RATS method with a direct reconstruction of lifetime maps

RAndom Temporal Signals (RATS) method has proven to be a useful and versatile method for measuring photoluminescence (PL) dynamics and fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM). Here, we present two fundamental development steps in the method. First, we demonstrate that by using random digital laser modulation in RATS, it is possible to implement the measurement of PL dynamics with temporal resolution in units of nanoseconds. Secondly, we propose an alternative approach to evaluating the FLIM measurements based on a single-pixel camera experiment. In contrast to the standard evaluation, which requires a lengthy iterative reconstruction of PL maps for each timepoint, here we use a limited set of predetermined PL lifetimes and calculate the amplitude maps corresponding to each lifetime. The alternative approach significantly saves post-processing time and, in addition, in a system with noise present, it shows better stability in terms of the accuracy of the FLIM spectrogram. Besides simulations that confirmed the functionality of the extension, we implemented the new advancements into a microscope optical setup for mapping PL dynamics on the micrometer scale. The presented principles were also verified experimentally by mapping a LuAG:Ce crystal surface

    Disastrous events and destination image

Many disastrous events worldwide have impacted on the image of tourist destinations. The subsequent downturn in tourism numbers and tourism spending has been directly blamed on those events. Arrival numbers and hotel occupancy rates have shown an immediate downturn following disastrous events in recent years. A comprehensive crisis management plan should incorporate guidelines to manage the return to the pre-disaster stage and re-positioning of the destination to re-establish its image. The destination image models discussed in the literature, to date, have not included crisis management as one of the important considerations for a destination. This paper advocates changes to tourism destination image models that recognise the importance of crisis management and its subsequent impact on destination image. Tourism industry planners and marketers need to have access to reliable theoretical frameworks that incorporate all aspects of destination image to guide strategy formulation. The suggested improved model incorporating crisis management status - the preparedness for and the ability to deal with a disaster at any level - is more likely to provide this opportunity.<br /
