    Identifying ‘Immigrants’ through Violence: Memory, Press, and Archive in the making of ‘Bangladeshi Migrants’ in Assam

    This research studies the violent conflict between Bengali Muslims, who mostly migrated from the former East Bengal during colonial times, and the Bodo Tribe, who mostly follow the Bathou religion in the Bodoland region of Assam. This conflict is often seen through the preexisting lens of communal violence between Hindus and Muslims in India. Here, conflict between a religious minority and an ethnic one is investigated in its locality and this investigation highlights the complex history of the region and its part in shaping this antagonism. It does so by looking into the colonial archive which introduced the category of ‘immigrant’ to the region, together with Urdu and English press coverage of four violent events that essentialize the categories ‘Muslim’ and ‘immigrant’, respectively. Defying simple categorization, the Bengali Muslims in the Kokrajhar district have devised their own strategy for narrating time. Through archival and ethnographic research this study shows the shifting meaning of the concept of an ‘immigrant’ and its implication for social and political realities. This research addresses some less studied dynamics of the clash between two minorities and its representation in both the English and Urdu Media

    The well known refinement of the Nash Equilibrium (NE) called an Evolutionarily Stable Strategy (ESS) is investigated in the quantum Prisoner's Dilemma (PD) game that is played using an Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen type setting. Earlier results report that in this scheme the classical NE remains intact as the unique solution of the quantum PD game. In contrast, we show here that interestingly in this scheme a non-classical solution for the ESS emerges for the quantum PD.Comment: 9 pages, no figur

    Distributed and Load-Adaptive Self Configuration in Sensor Networks

    Proactive self-configuration is crucial for MANETs such as sensor networks, as these are often deployed in hostile environments and are ad hoc in nature. The dynamic architecture of the network is monitored by exchanging so-called Network State Beacons (NSBs) between key network nodes. The Beacon Exchange rate and the network state define both the time and nature of a proactive action to combat network performance degradation at a time of crisis. It is thus essential to optimize these parameters for the dynamic load profile of the network. This paper presents a novel distributed adaptive optimization Beacon Exchange selection model which considers distributed network load for energy efficient monitoring and proactive reconfiguration of the network. The results show an improvement of 70% in throughput, while maintaining a guaranteed quality-of- service for a small control-traffic overhead

    Backwards-induction outcome in a quantum game

    In economics duopoly is a market dominated by two firms large enough to influence the market price. Stackelberg presented a dynamic form of duopoly that is also called `leader-follower' model. We give a quantum perspective on Stackelberg duopoly that gives a backwards-induction outcome same as the Nash equilibrium in static form of duopoly also known as Cournot's duopoly.     An improved functional link neural network for data classification

    The goal of classification is to assign the pre-specified group or class to an instance based on the observed features related to that instance. The implementation of several classification models is challenging as some only work well when the underlying assumptions are satisfied. In order to generate the complex mapping between input and output space to build the arbitrary complex non-linear decision boundaries, neural networks has become prominent tool with wide range of applications. The recent techniques such as Multilayer Perceptron (MLP), standard Functional Link Neural Network (FLNN) and Chebyshev Functional Link Neural Network (CFLNN) outperformed their existing regression, multiple regression, quadratic regression, stepwise polynomials, K-nearest neighbor (K-NN), Naïve Bayesian classifier and logistic regression. This research work explores the insufficiencies of well- known CFLNN model where CFLNN utilizes functional expansion with large number of degree and coefficient value for inputs enhancement which increase computational complexity of the network. Accordingly, two alternative models namely; Genocchi Functional Link Neural Network (GFLNN) and Chebyshev Wavelets Functional Link Neural Network (CWFLNN) are proposed. The novelty of these approaches is that, GFLNN presents the functional expansions with less degree and small coefficient values to make less computational inputs for training to overcome the drawbacks of CFLNN. Whereas, CWFLNN is capable to generate more number of small coefficient value based basis functions with same degree of polynomials as compared to other polynomials and it has orthonormality condition therefore it has more accurate constant of functional expansion and can approximate the functions within the interval. These properties of CWFLNN are used to overcome the deficiencies of GFLNN. The significance of proposed models is verified by using statistical tests such as Freidman test based on accuracy ranking and pairwise comparison test. Moreover, MLP, standard FLNN and CFLNN are used for comparison. For experiments, benched marked data sets from UCI repository, SVMLIB data set and KEEL data sets are utilized. The CWFLNN reveals significant improvement (due to its generating more numbers of basis function property) in terms of classification accuracy and reduces the computational work

    Islamic Contributions to Science: Historical and Contemporary Issues

    The normative practice in the history of science in the West is to start with the Greeks and then jump to the European Renaissance, both studied as a background for the emergence of modern science in the seventeenth century. More considerate works devote a few pages to the Islamic scientific tradition, as a harbinger of the Greek legacy. This practice, based on the nineteenth-century Orientalism, has seriously harmed the emergence of an accurate history of science in general and the nature of contributions made by the Islamic scientific tradition to science in particular. These accounts continue to produce a caricature of a tradition that lasted longer than the Greek and the modern scientific traditions. When placed in its own historical matrix, the nature of Islamic contributions to science is a totally different story
