Immunocytochemical Colocalization of Fibroblast Growth Factor-1 with Neurotrophin-3 in Mouse Alveolar Macrophages

Alveolar macrophages are known to express a variety of growth factors and neurotrophins. Fibroblast growth factor-1 (FGF-1) is abundantly present in the lung and has mitogenic and neurotrophic activities similarly to neurotrophins. In order to determine whether FGF-1 associates with neurotrophins in alveolar macrophages, we investigated the immunocytochemical colocalization of FGF-1 with neurotrophins, nerve growth factor (NGF), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and neurotrophin-3 (NT-3), in mouse alveolar macrophages. The results showed that 34% of macrophages were immunoreactive for FGF-1, 10% for NGF, 9% for BDNF, and 17% for NT-3. Of FGF-1-immunoreactive (IR) macrophages, 16% were immunoreactive for NT-3, but only small percentages were immunoreactive for NGF (0.8%) and for BDNF (0.3%). FGF-1 and neurotrophins were all localized in the intracellular vesicles. In the vesicles, FGF-1 and NT-3 were frequently colocalized. All macrophages expressed lysosome-associated protein-2 (LAMP-2), a late endosomal and lysosomal marker, and early endosomes antigen 1 (EEA1), an early endosomal marker. FGF-1 and NT-3 were predominantly colocalized with LAMP-2 rather than with EEA1, whereas NGF and BDNF were colocalized with EEA1 rather than with LAMP-2. These results indicate that FGF-1 and NT-3 are substantially expressed in mouse alveolar macrophages and colocalized in vesicles, predominantly in late endosomes and lysosomes

PCA-RECT: An Energy-efficient Object Detection Approach for Event Cameras

We present the first purely event-based, energy-efficient approach for object detection and categorization using an event camera. Compared to traditional frame-based cameras, choosing event cameras results in high temporal resolution (order of microseconds), low power consumption (few hundred mW) and wide dynamic range (120 dB) as attractive properties. However, event-based object recognition systems are far behind their frame-based counterparts in terms of accuracy. To this end, this paper presents an event-based feature extraction method devised by accumulating local activity across the image frame and then applying principal component analysis (PCA) to the normalized neighborhood region. Subsequently, we propose a backtracking-free k-d tree mechanism for efficient feature matching by taking advantage of the low-dimensionality of the feature representation. Additionally, the proposed k-d tree mechanism allows for feature selection to obtain a lower-dimensional dictionary representation when hardware resources are limited to implement dimensionality reduction. Consequently, the proposed system can be realized on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) device leading to high performance over resource ratio. The proposed system is tested on real-world event-based datasets for object categorization, showing superior classification performance and relevance to state-of-the-art algorithms. Additionally, we verified the object detection method and real-time FPGA performance in lab settings under non-controlled illumination conditions with limited training data and ground truth annotations.Comment: Accepted in ACCV 2018 Workshops, to appea

Polypoid melanoma and superficial spreading melanoma different subtypes in the same lesion

Melanoma is a malignant melanocytic neoplasm with high mortality rate, and steadily and universally increasing incidence rates. Polypoid melanoma is considered an exophytic variant of the nodular subtype. The incidence of polypoid melanoma is extremely variable, most likely because of the different criteria used for its characterization. We presented a rare case of polypoid melanoma and superficial spreading melanoma in the same lesion.Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP)UNIFESPSciEL

11th European Conference on Applied Superconductivity (EUCAS2013)Liquid hydrogen (LH₂), which has large latent heat, low viscosity coefficient, is expected to be a candidate for a cryogen for superconducting wires, not only MgB₂ but also other HTC superconductors. LH₂ cooled superconducting wires are expected to have excellent electro-magnetic characteristics, which is necessary to be clear for cooling stability design of LH₂ cooled superconducting device, however, due to handling difficulties of LH₂, there are only few papers on the properties of LH₂ cooled superconductors, especially under external magnetic field. We designed and made an experimental setup which can energize superconducting wires immersed in LH₂ with the current of up to 500A under the condition of external magnetic field up to 7 T and pressure up to 1.5 MPa. In order to confirm experimental method and safety operation of the setup, over current tests were carried out using MgB₂ superconducting wires under various external magnetic field conditions. Critical current of the test wire at the temperature 21, 24, 27, 29 K under external magnetic fields up to 1.2 T was successfully measured. The resistance of the wire also was measured, while the transport current exceeded the critical current of the wire
