Large-scale surface reconstruction energetics of Pt(100) and Au(100) by all-electron DFT

The low-index surfaces of Au and Pt all tend to reconstruct, a fact that is of key importance in many nanostructure, catalytic, and electrochemical applications. Remarkably, some significant questions regarding their structural energies remain even today, in particular for the large-scale quasihexagonal reconstructed (100) surfaces: Rather dissimilar reconstruction energies for Au and Pt in available experiments, and experiment and theory do not match for Pt. We here show by all-electron density-functional theory that only large enough "(5 x N)" approximant supercells capture the qualitative reconstruction energy trend between Au(100) and Pt(100), in contrast to what is often done in the theoretical literature. Their magnitudes are then in fact similar, and closer to the measured value for Pt(100); our calculations achieve excellent agreement with known geometric characteristics and provide direct evidence for the electronic reconstruction driving force.Comment: updated version - also includes EPAPS information as auxiliary file; related publications can be found at http://www.fhi-berlin.mpg.de/th/th.htm

Electron transport through quantum wires and point contacts

We have studied quantum wires using the Green's function technique and the density-functional theory, calculating the electronic structure and the conductance. All the numerics are implemented using the finite-element method with a high-order polynomial basis. For short wires, i.e. quantum point contacts, the zero-bias conductance shows, as a function of the gate voltage and at a finite temperature, a plateau at around 0.7G_0. (G_0 = 2e^2/h is the quantum conductance). The behavior, which is caused in our mean-field model by spontaneous spin polarization in the constriction, is reminiscent of the so-called 0.7-anomaly observed in experiments. In our model the temperature and the wire length affect the conductance-gate voltage curves in the same way as in the measured data.Comment: 8 page

Comment un apprenant finnophone maîtrise-t-il les stratégies d'adresse en français ?

Le français et le finnois ont un système d'adresse bipartite (tu / sinä – vous / te), et on pourrait donc penser que l'apprentissage des stratégies d'adresse en français ne pose guère de problèmes à un Finlandais. Toutefois, deux systèmes d'adresse ne se recouvrent jamais totalement : les Finlandais tutoient bien plus que les Français et les appellatifs s'emploient beaucoup moins en finnois qu'en français. La comparaison des systèmes d'adresse français et finnois ainsi que les recherches sur l'apprentissage de l'adresse permettent de supposer qu'au départ, dans le système d'adresse d'un apprenant de français finnophone, le tutoiement est surreprésenté et les appellatifs sont sous-représentés. On pourra également se demander si la variation des stratégies d'adresse d'après la situation de communication y, ne serait-ce que vaguement, et si, dans les situations examinées, les interactions servent à activer des savoirs pré-acquis et à acquérir de nouveaux savoirs

Eväitä isyyteen - Ohjaustuokio imeväisikäisten lasten hoidosta turvapaikanhakijaisille

Imeväisikäisikäisestä puhuttaessa tarkoitetaan alle 1 vuoden ikäistä lasta. Imeväisiälle tyypillistä on lapsen nopeasti tapahtuva huomattava kasvu sekä kehitys. Sitoutuneen isyyden sekä isän ja lapsen välisen hyvän vuorovaikutussuhteen isyyden on todettu vaikuttavan myönteisesti lapsen kehitykseen. Hyvin tyypillisiä vuorovaikutustilanteita vanhemman ja lapsen välillä ovat lapsen hoitoon liittyvät arkiset tilanteet, kuten peseytyminen, ruokailu, pukeutuminen ja leikki. Tämän toiminnallisen opinnäytetyön tarkoituksena oli lisätä turvapaikanhakijaisien tietoja ja taitoja imeväisikäisten lasten hoidosta. Opinnäytetyön tehtävänä oli järjestää turvapaikanhakijaisille ohjaustuokio, jossa heille opetettiin imeväisikäisten lasten hoitoon liittyviä taitoja ja näin ollen tuettiin heidän isyyttään. Opinnäytetyön toimeksiantajana toimi Kiteen vastaanottokeskus. Ohjaustuokio järjestettiin suunnitellusti kesäkuussa 2017, ja siihen osallistui 3 turvapaikanhakijaisää. Jatkokehitysideana voisi järjestää perheille tukiryhmän, jossa tuetaan vanhemmuutta ja arjessa jaksamista tällaisessa elämäntilanteessa. Lisäksi jostakin ohjaustuokion aiheesta voitaisiin tehdä laajempi ja syvällisempi ohjaus molemmille vanhemmille. Aiheesta voisi tehdä myös tutkimuksen, jossa tutkittaisiin turvapaikanhakijaisien ajatuksia isyydestään tai sitä, miten maahanmuutto on vaikuttanut isyyteen. Voitaisiin tehdä myös tutkimus, jossa kartoitettaisiin isien mielenkiintoa ja valmiutta vastaanottaa länsimaalaisiin suosituksiin ja näkökulmiin pohjautuvaa lastenhoidonohjaustaThe term “infant” refers to a child under the age of one. During the first-year, the child grows and develops fast. Commitment to fatherhood and good interaction between the father and the child have been noted to have a positive influence on the child’s devel-opment. Daily situations related to childcare as washing up, eating, dressing up and playing are very typical interaction situations between the parent and the child. The purpose of this practise-based thesis was to increase the knowledge and skills of asylum seeking fathers on infant care. The assignment was to organize a group guid-ance session for asylum seeking fathers where they were taught infant care skills, and consequently, their fatherhood was supported. This thesis was commissioned by Kitee Reception Centre. The group guidance session was held in June 2017 as planned and three asylum seeking fathers participated in it. A further development idea could be to organize a support group for families where their parenthood and coping with everyday life in this kind of life situation are supported. Also organizing more comprehensive and deeper guidance on some of the topics discussed in this thesis for both of the parents could be a further development idea. In addition, a study could be conducted to explore the thoughts of asylum seeking fathers on their fatherhood or how immigration has affected fatherhood. Another study could be conducted to survey fathers’ interest and capabilities to receive child care guidance based on western recommendations and point of view
