    A Fellow’s Progress

    Get PDF
I joined the Burgon Society in January 2004 and contacted the Dean of Studies, Professor Bruce Christianson straight away, my proposal being for a critical study of academical dress in Germany. My intention was to investigate the history and to propose a new design, based on my findings. My second intention was to hand this in as a Fellowship submission, which if successful would be a great honour for me and would entitle me to my first hood in this country. [Excerpt]

Academical Dress in Germany: Part 1—A Historical Outline and the Development of a New System

This paper will consider the higher education sector then and now and will give a summary of the present situation as far as graduation celebrations are concerned. The documentary evidence for medieval academical dress in Germany will form the basis on which a logical system of gowns, hoods and hats for use at present-day German state universities will be proposed. The focus of this paper is on the first degree and only touches on the doctorate degree where necessary. [Excerpt]

An algorithm for calculating the Lorentz angle in silicon detectors

Future experiments will use silicon sensors in the harsh radiation environment of the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) and high magnetic fields. The drift direction of the charge carriers is affected by the Lorentz force due to the high magnetic field. Also the resulting radiation damage changes the properties of the drift. In this paper measurements of the Lorentz angle of electrons and holes before and after irradiation are reviewed and compared with a simple algorithm to compute the Lorentz angle.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, final version accepted by NIMA. Lorentz angle measurements in irradiated silicon detectors between 77 K and 300 K

Future experiments are using silicon detectors in a high radiation environment and in high magnetic fields. The radiation tolerance of silicon improves by cooling it to temperatures below 180 K. At low temperatures the mobility increases, which leads to larger deflections of the charge carriers by the Lorentz force. A good knowledge of the Lorentz angle is needed for design and operation of silicon detectors. We present measurements of the Lorentz angle between 77 K and 300 K before and after irradiation with a primary beam of 21 MeV protons.Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, submitted to ICHEP2000, Osaka, Japa

The present work aimed to investigate the possibility of characterizing the State's responsibility in the civil area, as a result of the disrespect of the term of the proceedings within a period of time understood as reasonable. Therefore, it was observed and studied the criteria adopted by the European Court of Human Rights, those able to materialize the inappropriate delay. This study examined the view of the right to the process, without undue delay, as a bias of the dignity of the human person, investigating the scope of this vector in the construction of the legal system, including description of Brazilian legislative productions that didn’t respect this principle. The survey also encompassed aspects of the legal protection to the procedure in some legal systems, as well as in international law, doing, to the latter, an approach from the regional rules to the global frame. It has been described, on the other hand, particularities linked to the Brazilian legal structure and aspects of the nature of daily repeated demands, notably a reference to the authors and the defendants. The present study investigated the State’s civil liability institute, since its appearance until the progress of its conception over time, as well as the verification of its effects on the service of jurisdiction, when it is provided with failures. It was talked about the legal nature of the omission of the judicial service in due time, as well as their possible causes, distinguishing cases of personal Magistrate liability for the damage caused by his own actions. Finally, this work criticized the understanding signed by the Brazilian Supreme Court, about the rejection of the State’s liability when the delay is observed in the trial court proceedings, formulating a comparative parallel with the legal grounds that supports the law on State responsibility in the delay of the decision of the Brazilian administrative process, as well as the comprehension of the responsibility for judicial act in Portugal

Signatures of Mottness and Hundness in archetypal correlated metals

Physical properties of multi-orbital materials depend not only on the strength of the effective interactions among the valence electrons but also on their type. Strong correlations are caused by either Mott physics that captures the Coulomb repulsion among charges, or Hund physics that aligns the spins in different orbitals. We identify four energy scales marking the onset and the completion of screening in orbital and spin channels. The differences in these scales, which are manifest in the temperature dependence of the local spectrum and of the charge, spin and orbital susceptibilities, provide clear signatures distinguishing Mott and Hund physics. We illustrate these concepts with realistic studies of two archetypal strongly correlated materials, and corroborate the generality of our conclusions with a model Hamiltonian study
