Fabrication of Robust Thermal Transition Modules and First Cryogenic Experiment with the Refurbished COLDDIAG

Two sets of thermal transition modules as a key component for the COLDDIAG (cold vacuum chamber for beam heat load diagnostics) refurbishment were manufactured, based on the previous design study. The modules are installed in the existing COLDDIAG cryostat and tested with an operating temperature of approximately 50 K at both a cold bore and a thermal shield. This cool-down experiment is a preliminary investigation aiming at beam heat-load studies at the FCC-hh where the beam screens will be operated at almost the same temperature. In this contribution, we report the fabrication processes of the mechanically robust transition modules and the first thermal measurement results with the refurbished COLDDIAG in a cryogenic environment. The static heat load in the refurbished cryostat remains unchanged, compared to that in the former one (4-K cold bore and 50-K shield with thin transitions), despite the increase in the transition thickness. It originates from the identical temperature at the cold bore and the shield, which can theoretically allow the heat intakes by thermal conduction and radiation between them to vanish

Thermal Transition Design and Beam Heat-load Estimation for the COLDDIAG Refurbishment

The COLDDIAG (cold vacuum chamber for beam heat load diagnostics) developed at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology has been modified for more studies at cryogenic temperatures different from the previous operations at 4 K in a cold bore and at 50 K in a thermal shield. The key components in this campaign are two thermal transitions connecting both ends of the bore at 50 K with the shield at the same or higher temperature. In this paper, we present design efforts for the compact transitions, allowed heat intakes to the cooling power margin and mechanical robustness in the cryogenic environment. A manufacture scheme for the transition and its peripheral is also given. In addition, the beam heat loads in the refurbished COLDDIAG are estimated in terms of the accelerator beam parameters

Entrepreneurship and the development of global brands

    Get PDF
Over the course of the twentieth century, entrepreneurs developed a number of successful global brands in consumer-goods industries. However, few independent brands survived the merger waves of the 1980s. To address the question of why so few independent brands survived, this paper examines successful brands in industries that rely principally on advertising for competitive success. Successful consumer-goods brands in several industries and countries are compared in order to highlight innovative strategies pursued by brand managers. The analyzed brands are mainly owned by Europeans, although a few examples of American and Japanese brands are covered as well

Progress of the Development of a Superconducting Undulator as a THz Source for FELs

    Get PDF
To produce radiation in the THz frequency range at X-ray Free Electron Lasers, undulators with large period length, high fields, and large gaps are required. These demands can be fulfilled by superconducting undulators. In this contribution, the actual requirements on the main parameters of such a superconducting undulator will be discussed and the progress of the design will be discussed. In addition, beam impedance and heat load results obtained analytically as well as by large-scale wakefield simulations will be presented
