    The impact of skills on labor market performance is a topic which has attracted a growing attention during the last years and has become a major concern among policy makers. In this paper, I discuss on the skill needs in Europe and skill shortages and surpluses as well. Moreover, I examine five important dimensions of skills: information skills, communication skills, problem solving skills, software skills and digital skills. For all of them I have found negative correlation with unemployment rates, findings which suggest that these skills can improve the employment prospects and reduce the skill mismatch in the workplace. Finally, I estimate the effect of three levels of education on unemployment rates across a sample of 28 European countries for the 1999-2016 time period. Both tertiary and elementary education seem to reduce unemployment for European countries, while secondary education is connected with increased unemployment rates

    On the stability of generalized second price auctions with budgets

    The Generalized Second Price (GSP) auction used typically to model sponsored search auctions does not include the notion of budget constraints, which is present in practice. Motivated by this, we introduce the different variants of GSP auctions that take budgets into account in natural ways. We examine their stability by focusing on the existence of Nash equilibria and envy-free assignments. We highlight the differences between these mechanisms and find that only some of them exhibit both notions of stability. This shows the importance of carefully picking the right mechanism to ensure stable outcomes in the presence of budgets.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    Inferring the Urban Transmission Potential of Bat Influenza Viruses

    Bats are considered natural reservoirs of various, potentially zoonotic viruses, exemplified by the influenza A-like viruses H17N10 and H18N11 in asymptomatic Neotropical bats. These influenza viruses are evolutionarily distinct, are poorly adapted to laboratory mice and ferrets and cannot reassort in vitro with conventional strains to form new influenza subtypes. However, they have attracted renewed attention following reports that their entry in host cells is mediated by the trans-species conserved MHC-II proteins, suggesting that they hold zoonotic potential. Despite the recent studies, the viruses' epidemiology and public health significance remain incompletely understood. Delineating the mechanistic basis of the interactions with their hosts and assessing their global distribution are essential in order to fully assess the zoonotic threat that these strains pose

    Flexural dynamic response of monopile foundations under linear wave loads

    An analytical solution for the dynamic response of submerged slender circular cylindrical structures subjected to linear wave loads is presented. A double Laplace transform with respect to temporal and spatial variables is applied both to motion equation and boundary conditions. The dynamic deflection of the beam is obtained by inversion of the Laplace transform. The latter with respect to spatial variable is obtained analytically, while the one concerning the temporal variable is numerically calculated using Durbin numerical scheme.
