MR imaging–derived oxygen-hemoglobin dissociation curves and fetal-placental oxygen-hemoglobin affinities
PURPOSE: To generate magnetic resonance (MR) imaging–derived, oxygen-hemoglobin dissociation curves and to map fetal-placental oxygen-hemoglobin affinity in pregnant mice noninvasively by combining blood oxygen level–dependent (BOLD) T2* and oxygen-weighted T1 contrast mechanisms under different respiration challenges. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All procedures were approved by the Weizmann Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. Pregnant mice were analyzed with MR imaging at 9.4 T on embryonic days 14.5 (eight dams and 58 fetuses; imprinting control region ICR strain) and 17.5 (21 dams and 158 fetuses) under respiration challenges ranging from hyperoxia to hypoxia (10 levels of oxygenation, 100%–10%; total imaging time, 100 minutes). A shorter protocol with normoxia to hyperoxia was also performed (five levels of oxygenation, 20%–100%; total imaging time, 60 minutes). Fast spin-echo anatomic images were obtained, followed by sequential acquisition of three-dimensional gradient-echo T2*- and T1-weighted images. Automated registration was applied to align regions of interest of the entire placenta, fetal liver, and maternal liver. Results were compared by using a two-tailed unpaired Student t test. R1 and R2* values were derived for each tissue. MR imaging–based oxygen-hemoglobin dissociation curves were constructed by nonlinear least square fitting of 1 minus the change in R2*divided by R2*at baseline as a function of R1 to a sigmoid-shaped curve. The apparent P50 (oxygen tension at which hemoglobin is 50% saturated) value was derived from the curves, calculated as the R1 scaled value (x) at which the change in R2* divided by R2*at baseline scaled (y) equals 0.5. RESULTS: The apparent P50 values were significantly lower in fetal liver than in maternal liver for both gestation stages (day 14.5: 21% ± 5 [P = .04] and day 17.5: 41% ± 7 [P < .0001]). The placenta showed a reduction of 18% ± 4 in mean apparent P50 values from day 14.5 to day 17.5 (P = .003). Reproduction of the MR imaging–based oxygen-hemoglobin dissociation curves with a shorter protocol that excluded the hypoxic periods was demonstrated. CONCLUSION: MR imaging–based oxygen-hemoglobin dissociation curves and oxygen-hemoglobin affinity information were derived for pregnant mice by using 9.4-T MR imaging, which suggests a potential to overcome the need for direct sampling of fetal or maternal blood. Total spin coherence transfer echo spectroscopy
The sensitivity of multiple quantum NMR transitions to magnetic field inhomogeneity and the relative phases and amplitudes of multiple quantum lines are discussed. The technique of total spin coherence transfer echo spectroscopy (TSCTES) is described and experimentally demonstrated. The TSCTES method allows multiple quantum spectra to be obtained which are free of inhomogeneous magnet broadening, yet remain sensitive to spin–spin couplings and chemical shift differences. The method takes advantage of the properties of the total spin coherence, the unique transition between the extreme eigenstates of a coupled spin system. Experimental results are reported for partially oriented acetaldehyde and are analyzed in terms of irreducible tensor operators. Limitations on the method and extensions to heteronuclear spin systems are also discussed

Determination of dipole coupling constants using heteronuclear multiple quantum NMR
The problem of extracting dipole couplings from a system of N spins I = 1/2 and one spin S by NMR techniques is analyzed. The resolution attainable using a variety of single quantum methods is reviewed. The theory of heteronuclear multiple quantum (HMQ) NMR is developed, with particular emphasis being placed on the superior resolution available in HMQ spectra. Several novel pulse sequences are introduced, including a two-step method for the excitation of HMQ coherence. Experiments on partially oriented [1−13C] benzene demonstrate the excitation of the necessary HMQ coherence and illustrate the calculation of relative line intensities. Spectra of high order HMQ coherence under several different effective Hamiltonians achievable by multiple pulse sequences are discussed. A new effective Hamiltonian, scalar heteronuclear recoupled interactions by multiple pulse (SHRIMP), achieved by the simultaneous irradiation of both spin species with the same multiple pulse sequence, is introduced. Experiments are described which allow heteronuclear couplings to be correlated with an S-spin spreading parameter in spectra free of inhomogeneous broadening
Superfluid drag of two-species Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices
We study two-species Bose-Einstein condensates in quasi two-dimensional
optical lattices of varying geometry and potential depth. Based on the
numerically exact Bloch and Wannier functions obtained using the plane-wave
expansion method, we quantify the drag (entrainment coupling) between the
condensate components. This drag originates from the (short range)
inter-species interaction and increases with the kinetic energy. As a result of
the interplay between interaction and kinetic energy effects, the
superfluid-drag coefficient shows a non-monotonic dependence on the lattice
depth. To make contact with future experiments, we quantitatively investigate
the drag for mass ratios corresponding to relevant atomic species.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. Accepted in its original form but minor changes

Using American Indian Legends to Teach Youths Financial Literacy: Innovative Approaches to Cultural Adaptation
In this article, we report on pilot implementation of a financial education program for American Indian (AI) youths. Our purpose is to share our experience engaging AI youths in a culturally relevant experience in which they learn financial education concepts. Specifically, we incorporated Ojibwe legends into lesson content to connect Ojibwe culture to the information being taught. We report a combination of quantitative survey data and qualitative observational notes that overall suggest evidence of success regarding effectively engaging AI youths in financial education. Our approach may be of particular interest to Extension educators working with youths from culturally underserved audiences

Charge reversal of colloidal particles
A theory is presented for the effective charge of colloidal particles in
suspensions containing multivalent counterions. It is shown that if colloids
are sufficiently strongly charged, the number of condensed multivalent
counterion can exceed the bare colloidal charge leading to charge reversal.
Charge renormalization in suspensions with multivalent counterions depends on a
subtle interplay between the solvation energies of the multivalent counterions
in the bulk and near the colloidal surface. We find that the effective charge
is {\it not} a monotonically decreasing function of the multivalent salt
concentration. Furthermore, contrary to the previous theories, it is found that
except at very low concentrations, monovalent salt hinders the charge reversal.
This conclusion is in agreement with the recent experiments and simulations
Metallic spin-glasses beyond mean-field: An approach to the impurity-concentration dependence of the freezing temperature
A relation between the freezing temperature () and the exchange
couplings () in metallic spin-glasses is derived, taking the
spin-correlations () into account. This approach does not involve a
disorder-average. The expansion of the correlations to first order in
leads to the molecular-field result from
Thouless-Anderson-Palmer. Employing the current theory of the spin-interaction
in disordered metals, an equation for as a function of the
concentration of impurities is obtained, which reproduces the available data
from {\sl Au}Fe, {\sl Ag}Mn, and {\sl Cu}Mn alloys well.Comment: 4 figures. This is a strongly revised version, where several aspects
have been improved, and the equation for the freezing temperature has been
refined. It is equivalent to the published version in J. Phys.: Condens.
