On the expressive power of planar perfect matching and permanents of bounded treewidth matrices
Valiant introduced some 25 years ago an algebraic model of computation along
with the complexity classes VP and VNP, which can be viewed as analogues of the
classical classes P and NP. They are defined using non-uniform sequences of
arithmetic circuits and provides a framework to study the complexity for
sequences of polynomials. Prominent examples of difficult (that is,
VNP-complete) problems in this model includes the permanent and hamiltonian
polynomials. While the permanent and hamiltonian polynomials in general are
difficult to evaluate, there have been research on which special cases of these
polynomials admits efficient evaluation. For instance, Barvinok has shown that
if the underlying matrix has bounded rank, both the permanent and the
hamiltonian polynomials can be evaluated in polynomial time, and thus are in
VP. Courcelle, Makowsky and Rotics have shown that for matrices of bounded
treewidth several difficult problems (including evaluating the permanent and
hamiltonian polynomials) can be solved efficiently. An earlier result of this
flavour is Kasteleyn's theorem which states that the sum of weights of perfect
matchings of a planar graph can be computed in polynomial time, and thus is in
VP also. For general graphs this problem is VNP-complete. In this paper we
investigate the expressive power of the above results. We show that the
permanent and hamiltonian polynomials for matrices of bounded treewidth both
are equivalent to arithmetic formulas. Also, arithmetic weakly skew circuits
are shown to be equivalent to the sum of weights of perfect matchings of planar
graphs.Comment: 14 page
On the expressive power of permanents and perfect matchings of matrices of bounded pathwidth/cliquewidth
Some 25 years ago Valiant introduced an algebraic model of computation in
order to study the complexity of evaluating families of polynomials. The theory
was introduced along with the complexity classes VP and VNP which are analogues
of the classical classes P and NP. Families of polynomials that are difficult
to evaluate (that is, VNP-complete) includes the permanent and hamiltonian
polynomials. In a previous paper the authors together with P. Koiran studied
the expressive power of permanent and hamiltonian polynomials of matrices of
bounded treewidth, as well as the expressive power of perfect matchings of
planar graphs. It was established that the permanent and hamiltonian
polynomials of matrices of bounded treewidth are equivalent to arithmetic
formulas. Also, the sum of weights of perfect matchings of planar graphs was
shown to be equivalent to (weakly) skew circuits. In this paper we continue the
research in the direction described above, and study the expressive power of
permanents, hamiltonians and perfect matchings of matrices that have bounded
pathwidth or bounded cliquewidth. In particular, we prove that permanents,
hamiltonians and perfect matchings of matrices that have bounded pathwidth
express exactly arithmetic formulas. This is an improvement of our previous
result for matrices of bounded treewidth. Also, for matrices of bounded
weighted cliquewidth we show membership in VP for these polynomials.Comment: 21 page
The market for green bonds has seen great growth in recent years, in Sweden as well as internationally. This is due to the growing importance of sustainability in the financial markets. Despite seeing green bonds as a key instrument for sustainable financial transition, the market is small in relation to the traditional bond market.
The purpose of this study is to investigate what motivates actors to participate in the market for green bonds in Sweden. There is evidence that the growth of the green bond is hindered by the lack of a commonly agreed definition and well-established standard. Therefore the study furthermore intends to investigate how actors on the market work to obtain legitimacy. To answer the study's questions, a theoretical framework based on motivation and legitimacy theory has been used. This is to investigate and gain an understanding of what drives actors to participate in the market and how they work to obtain legitimacy. The study should be seen as a complement to the study by Maltais & Nykvist (2021) work on motivational drivers on the market for green bonds.
This multiple case study is a qualitative study with an inductive approach. The collection of empirical data is mainly based on three semi-structured interviews with three interviewees from different companies that are active in the market for green bonds in Sweden. The three companies that the interviewees work for are Nordea, LantmÀnnen and Vasakronan. Furthermore, empirical evidence has been taken from the respective companies' websites.
The study's conclusions indicate that the main drivers are linked to the business case. Driving forces linked to legitimacy and financial benefits are not as extensive. The study also shows legitimacy-creating activities such as how all participating actors use the same framework, the Green Bond Principles (GBP) of the International Capital Market Association (ICMA) and that reporting is an important tool for legitimacy. An independent second party opinion is also expected by the actors
