    Anthocyanin Stability in Food Products made with Freeze-Dried Blueberry Powder

    This study evaluated the stability of anthocyanins in six blueberry products (gummy, graham bar, oatmeal bar, rice krispy bar, ice pop and juice) prepared with freeze-dried wild blueberry powder during processing and over eight weeks storage. Total anthocyanins were determined by HPLC before processing and at day 0 and 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks of storage. Thermal processing of gummy and graham bar products resulted in significant losses of anthocyanins (50% and 31%, respectively). An eight-week storage time also resulted in a significant decrease in anthocyanins (7% to 51%) in products stored at ambient temperature. The ice pop, which was stored at -20oC, was the best product for shelf-stability as it experienced no significant decline in total anthocyanins during processing or over the entire shelf-life study. Future research should be conducted to determine the differences in total anthocyanins in the products over time when they are stored under refrigeration. Additionally, polymeric color should be analyzed as this indicator has the potential to further explain the nature of the decreases in anthocyanins observed during storage

    Recursive estimation of possibly misspecified MA(1) models: Convergence of a general algorithm

    We introduce a recursive algorithm of conveniently general form for estimating the coefficient of a moving average model of order one and obtain convergence results for both correct and misspecified MA(1) models. The algorithm encompasses Pseudolinear Regression (PLR--also referred to as AML and RML1RML_1) and Recursive Maximum Likelihood (RML2RML_2) without monitoring.     In order to evaluate reaction of people to sonic booms of varying overpressures and time durations, a series of closely controlled and systematic flight test studies were conducted in the vicinity of Edwards AFB, California, from June 3 to June 23, 1966. The dynamic responses of several building structures were measured as a part of these studies, and the measurements made in a one-story residence structure (Edwards test structure No. 1) are presented. Sample acceleration and strain recordings are presented from F-104, B-58, and XB-70 sonic-boom exposures, along with tabulations of the maximum acceleration and strain values measured for each one of about 140 flight tests. These data are compared with similar measurements for engine noise exposures of the building during simulated landing approaches and takeoffs of KC-135 aircraft

    Effects of Recess on Student Engagement

    The purpose of this action research project is to determine the impact of recess on student engagement. Off-task behavior was observed in students in a fourth grade classroom for four weeks. The first two weeks the students did not receive recess, and the second two weeks the students did receive recess. Quantitative data was collected using the Academic Engagement Monitoring Form (Sprick, Knight, Reinke, and Skyles, 2010). Analysis of the data suggests a positive correlation between recess and on-task behavior

    Feminist Substrate

    Substrate is the key component of making paper. The first part in making the substrate is to break down all that is known into the watery mix to make something new. The argument is that new knowledge materialises with the bonding of atoms that physically mix with the substrate, binding it together to form something new. Tactile, soft, strong yet fragile, paper is the ultimate feminist ideal that should be called ‘her’, ‘she’, instead of ‘it’ in the making of paper. Paper can be made as skin mimicry. She does not stretch like skin does unless other materials are added to the substrate. Otherwise like skin, she easily tears, partly transparent, uneven in texture, paper retains memory and embodies materiality that can move forward into a feminist ideal. ‘It’s good to have a vision. Even if it’s flawed, or turns out to be not what you expected’ Mary Kelly described of her Post-Partem Document installation exhibited at the ICA in the ‘seventies’ (The Guardian, 18th May, 2015). The watery substrate is remixed, remade, out of chaos emerges new knowledge, materialised, chewed, embodied, containing some imperfections. She retains what has gone before and absorbs the new. The arguments are that these meta creations are the purest forms of feminist research, and the potential development of new scientific and creative materiality.
