The Effects of Gentrification on Residents’ Sense of Place and Group Cohesion: A Study of Pittsburgh Neighborhoods

    Get PDF
Many researchers have studied gentrification. Much of the existing research on gentrification has focused on the extent of population displacement and changes in the community economic profile. Others have focused on the experiences of residents during and after gentrification. In this paper, I take the latter approach. Using data from the 2018 Pittsburgh Quality of Life survey, I examine the effects of gentrification on a range of community-related attitudes (e.g. sense of place and group cohesion). Specifically, I compared residents who reside in gentrifying or gentrified neighborhoods with those who live in neighborhoods that have not gentrified. My two main research questions were: 1) Do residents in gentrifying neighborhoods have a decreased sense of place and group cohesion? 2) Does residents’ length of residence amplify the effects of gentrification on community attitudes? I found evidence to support the first hypothesis, but the second hypothesis was not supported. I discuss results, implications of the research, and possible directions for future research

Conflict Resolution Skills For New Staff Accountants And Auditors

    Get PDF
This case is designed to help accounting students learn and apply conflict resolution skills that they will need to be successful in the workplace. Accounting students need to develop strong technical and people skills in order to become successful accountants or auditors. This is true whether they enter public accounting, industry or government. Technical skills enable a professional to do the work required in an efficient, timely and accurate manner. They are learned in school, on the job, and through specialized training. People skills enable a professional to work successfully with those inside and outside of the organization. Unlike technical skills, a professional might never receive any formal training regarding people skills. This is unfortunate as people that do not get along with others and resolve conflicts in a productive manner are highly unlikely to attain long-term success. People skills include being able to: establish rapport and get along with others; comfortably work with people with diverse backgrounds and personality types; successfully resolve interpersonal conflicts; influence, persuade and negotiate with others; and to effectively train, supervise, and lead others. Most of the skills are interrelated and a weakness in any of the above areas can either create conflict, or hinder a person’s ability to resolve it. When two or more people interact, the possibility of conflict exists. Conflict in the workplace often arises from diversity issues, from people that seem to be in constant conflict with those around them, and when people bring their personal problems to work. Conflict is also likely when company policies are perceived as unfair or arbitrary, when people have control issues and micro-manage others, when reviewers or reviewees act unprofessional, and when there is intense competition for personal rewards or organizational resources. Successful conflict resolution can be complicated. Some situations can not be changed and should either be avoided in the first place, ignored (coped with), or escaped from. Other situations can be resolved through persuasion, influence, and negotiation. Further, the methods used to resolve conflicts may differ based on whether the professional is dealing with a client, a peer, or someone with more or less power than they have

Improved Model for Low Cost Sun Sensor Attitude Filtering

    Get PDF
A new Sun sensor measurement model is designed and implemented in the attitude estimation system of a simulated spacecraft in low-Earth orbit (LEO) subject to environmental disturbance torques. This new measurement model remains compatible with all previous iterations of coarse Sun sensor hardware, it is merely the data processing that is different. Two Unscented Kalman Filters (UKF) are run in parallel onboard the simulated satellite – one filter using a standard Sun sensor measurement model and the other using the new measurement model. All other details and inputs to the two filters are identical. The results of the two attitude filters are compared to evaluate the performance of the new measurement model and the source of improvement is discussed

Targeting Ageism and Ableism: a Simulation on Loss and Decline

    Get PDF
Presentation given at the The D.I.F. Conference, Georgia Southern University. Young individuals commonly experience difficulties in understanding functional loss and sensory decline frequently accompanying normative aging processes (Bodner, 2009; Kusumastuti, vanFenema, Polman-van Stratum, Achterberg, Lindenberg, & Westendorp, 2017). Utilizing the framework of Wood (2003), this workshop will provide attendees with an opportunity to gain first-hand experience regarding common functional loss and sensory decline occurring across the lifespan as well as engage in caregiving tasks. This aging simulation will also be used to investigate ageism and ableism as it relates to the lived experiences of those living with loss and decline and in-depth account of contemporary models of aging as they pertain to Successful Aging and Positive Psychology will also be explored

Full phase diagram of active Brownian disks: from melting to motility-induced phase separation

We establish the complete phase diagram of self-propelled hard disks in two spatial dimensions from the analysis of the equation of state and the statistics of local order parameters. The equilibrium melting scenario is maintained at small activities, with coexistence between active liquid and hexatic order, followed by a proper hexatic phase and a further transition to an active solid. As activity increases, the emergence of hexatic and solid order is shifted towards higher densities. Above a critical activity and for a certain range of packing fractions, the system undergoes MIPS and demixes into low and high density phases; the latter can be either disordered (liquid) or ordered (hexatic or solid) depending on activity
