    A Consent Framework for the Internet of Things in the GDPR Era

    The Internet of Things (IoT) is an environment of connected physical devices and objects that communicate amongst themselves over the internet. The IoT is based on the notion of always-connected customers, which allows businesses to collect large volumes of customer data to give them a competitive edge. Most of the data collected by these IoT devices include personal information, preferences, and behaviors. However, constant connectivity and sharing of data create security and privacy concerns. Laws and regulations like the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) of 2016 ensure that customers are protected by providing privacy and security guidelines to businesses. Data subjects (users) should be informed on what information is being collected about them and if they consent or not. This dissertation proposes a consent framework that consists of data collection, consent collection, consent management, consent enforcement, and consent auditing. In the framework, there are GDPR requirements embedded in different components of the framework. The consent framework can help organizations to be GDPR consent compliant. In our evaluation of the solution, the results show that our solution has coverage over GDPR consent based on our use case. Our main contributions are the consent framework, consent manager, and the consent auditing tool

    Assessing the process of participatory monitoring and evaluation: A case study of the Salesian Institute Youth Project, vocational training in Cape Town South Africa

    Magister Artium (Development Studies) - MA(DVS)The involvement of beneficiaries in monitoring and evaluation processes, not only does it ensure the success of the project’s intended objectives, but it empowers, creates knowledge production while guaranteeing a means to a sustainable livelihood for beneficiaries. The study sought to assess the process of Participatory Monitoring and Evaluation using a case study of the Salesian Institute Youth project, vocational training in Cape Town South Africa. Thus the study set out to conduct an evaluative assessment of stakeholder participation in the process of PM&E; identify the organizational structure of the project team and the parties involved; assess the project intended goals versus the outcomes of the project, and identify the relationship between the process of PM&E and the outcomes of the project. The study employed quantitative and quantitative methods, noting the low response rate a larger sample of 150 questionnaires was evenly distributed across gender and 102 were completed. Ten interviews were conducted across all stakeholders. Data were captured and analyzed using SPSS and thematic analysis. The study concludes that the involvement of participants in the process of PM&E is vital to achieving positive projects outcomes. Participants should be made aware of the meaning, purposes of the project as this allows for their comprehension and free will to participate in PM&E processes. Although the outcomes of the project were positive, the study recommends that there is a need for an established scientific PM&E system for the organization that can be implemented in organization projects

    Understanding the poverty-reducing livelihoods of child support grant caregivers in Riebeeck East, South Africa

    In 1994, racial domination in the form of apartheid ended in South Africa and the first postapartheid government was elected through a non-racial and democratic franchise. The new government inherited an entrenched system of racial inequality as well as widespread poverty amongst the formerly oppressed population, and it sought to address these challenges through policies of redistribution based on a new progressive constitution which emphasised the realisation of socio-economic rights. At the same time, and despite its redistributive measures, the post-apartheid government has pursued a macro-economic strategy with pronounced neoliberal dimensions. One of its critical redistributive measures focuses on social assistance to poor blacks, and this has entailed the construction and expansion of a massive social grant system including the child support grant which is received by millions of black South Africans on a monthly basis. The objective of this thesis is to examine and understand the livelihoods of child support grant recipients (or caregivers) in the context of conditions of extreme vulnerability marked by poverty. It does so by focusing on the small town of Riebeek East located in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. Though undoubtedly child support grant caregivers are victims of poverty, the thesis demonstrates that they are not without agency. They exist in structural conditions of vulnerability and poverty, but they nevertheless seek to manoeuvre and negotiate their way in and through their conditions of existence. This does not necessarily alleviate their poverty in any significant manner but it does show evidence of reflexivity, decision-making and responsibility in the pursuit of livelihood practices and outcomes. In making this argument, I draw upon the mega-theory of Margaret Archer (specifically, her morphogenetic approach) and the more middle-level perspective of the Sustainable Livelihoods Framework. Beyond contributing to the prevailing academic literature on the child support grant in South Africa, this thesis also hopefully makes a small contribution to controversies about structure and agency within sociology

    Synthesis and characterization of molybdenum dichalcogenides nanoparticles via solution-processed technique for photovoltaic applications

    Energy generated from non-renewable energy sources has a drawback of prompted outflow of ozone harming substances. These drawbacks of the non-renewable energy have quickened innovative work of renewable power sources, since they have an advantage of the provision of a better, preserved, decent environment that is free from natural contamination and commotion. Photovoltaic devices are prevalent in improving the green energy utilization and defeating the natural concerns yielded from the current most overwhelming energy sources. Herein, the synthesis, characterization, and application of Molybdenum chalcogenide nanoparticles (NP) as alternative sources in the absorber layer of quantum dot solar sensitized cells (QDSSCs) is discussed. The MoS2 NPs were synthesized from the aliphatic and aromatic dithiocarbamate (DTC) ligands and complexes as precursors. The successful synthesis of the DTC ligands and MoDTC complexes was confirmed through characterization with a variety of techniques including 1H and 13C-NMR, Raman Spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-VIS), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Derivative thermogravimetric (DTG) analysis. The synthesized MoDTC complexes (precursors) were further used in the synthesis of MoS2 nanoparticles. A bottom -up colloidal approach was employed for the synthesis of the MoX2 NPs. The successful synthesis of the NP was confirmed as the results from the diffractive peaks obtained from XRD which were positive and agreed in comparison with the standard. The diffractive peaks were shown in the planes (100), (002), (100) and (105) for MoS2 nanoparticles; (002), (100), (103) and (110) for MoSe2 and (0002), (0004), (103) as well as (0006) for the MoTe2 nanoparticles. The MoSe2 nanoparticles showed the least size of the nanoparticles followed by MoTe2 and lastly MoS2. These results agreed with the results obtained using SEM analysis. For the optical properties of the nanoparticles, UV-VIS and PL were used, the shift of the peaks from the red shift (600 nm) to the blue shift 270-5 nm and 287-9 nm (UV-VIS) confirmed that the nanoparticles were quantum confined. The application of the MoX2 NPs in QDSSCs was done with MoSe2 showing the greatest PCE of 7.86 percent followed by MoTe2 6.93 percent and lastly MoS2 with a PCE of 6.05 percent and 5.47 percent.Thesis (MSc) (Chemistry) -- University of Fort Hare, 202

    A comparison of different parameter correlation models and the validation of an MEA-based absorber model

    AbstractConsiderable effort on research in CO2 capture technologies has been directed towards steady state systems while less seems to have been done for the same systems in transient state. This work presents a dynamic model for CO2 absorption using aqueous mono-ethanolamine (MEA). Validation against experimental results both obtained at steady state and dynamic conditions is included. A parametric sensitivity study of the underlying model equations is carried out based alternative parameter correlations for the reaction rate constant. It is concluded that validated results for one specific pilot plant don’t necessarily apply to other plants of different sizes under other operational conditions. Furthermore, a parametric sensitivity study for the other parameters as well as for the rest of the CO2 capture process is also warranted

    Spatial distribution of the active surveillance of sheep scrapie in Great Britain: an exploratory analysis

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>This paper explores the spatial distribution of sampling within the active surveillance of sheep scrapie in Great Britain. We investigated the geographic distribution of the birth holdings of sheep sampled for scrapie during 2002 – 2005, including samples taken in abattoir surveys (c. 83,100) and from sheep that died in the field ("fallen stock", c. 14,600). We mapped the birth holdings by county and calculated the sampling rate, defined as the proportion of the holdings in each county sampled by the surveys. The Moran index was used to estimate the global spatial autocorrelation across Great Britain. The contributions of each county to the global Moran index were analysed by a local indicator of spatial autocorrelation (LISA).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The sampling rate differed among counties in both surveys, which affected the distribution of detected cases of scrapie. Within each survey, the county sampling rates in different years were positively correlated during 2002–2005, with the abattoir survey being more strongly autocorrelated through time than the fallen stock survey. In the abattoir survey, spatial indices indicated that sampling rates in neighbouring counties tended to be similar, with few significant contrasts. Sampling rates were strongly correlated with sheep density, being highest in Wales, Southwest England and Northern England. This relationship with sheep density accounted for over 80% of the variation in sampling rate among counties. In the fallen stock survey, sampling rates in neighbouring counties tended to be different, with more statistically significant contrasts. The fallen stock survey also included a larger proportion of holdings providing many samples.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Sampling will continue to be uneven unless action is taken to make it more uniform, if more uniform sampling becomes a target. Alternatively, analyses of scrapie occurrence in these datasets can take account of the distribution of sampling. Combining the surveys only partially reduces uneven sampling. Adjusting the distribution of sampling between abattoirs to reduce the bias in favour of regions with high sheep densities could probably achieve more even sampling. However, any adjustment of sampling should take account of the current understanding of the distribution of scrapie cases, which will be improved by further analysis of this dataset.</p
