Computing price trends in sequential auctions

    Get PDF
This paper compares various methods used for measuring price trends in sequential auctions and draws on index number theory. Data from wine auctions are used to show that different methods applied to the same data may lead to significantly différent conclusions. Moreover the same method can even lead to opposite results depending on the way pairs are selected within the set of similar objects sold sequentially. Finally, the number of identical objects being sold also influences the price trend.Sequential auctions, Price aggregation, Price indices

The evolution of central securities depositaries in Europe: stable functions in a changing environment

    Get PDF
Settlement-delivery (S&D) operations of CSDs or ICSDs are the second last stage of the securities treatment procedure, the last stage being the delivery of securities into the accounts of the final holders by their account managers/custodians. As for national transfers, the organisation is fairly simple since regional depositors are directly connected to the central securities depositary which fulfils two overriding functions on their behalf:- ensuring the final custody of securities and testifying to their authenticity ;- ensuring the circulation of securities within the market through one or several S&D systems.Central Securities Depositaries ; Europe

Why are some coalitions more successful than others in setting standards? Empirical evidence from the Blu-ray vs. HD-DVD standard war

    Get PDF
Standard-setting coalitions are increasingly composed of rival firms from different sectors and are characterized by simultaneous and/or sequential cooperation and competition among their members. This paper examines why firms choose to belong to two standard-setting coalitions instead of one and what determines the success of a standard coalition. We test empirically for network effect, experience effect, and coopetitive effect in the Blu-ray vs. HD-DVD standard war. We find that the higher the similarity of the members in the coalition, the greater the probability of standard coalition success. Furthermore, relatedness leads to a greater probability of joining both competing coalitions, but at a given degree of knowledge difference, an opposite effect exists.Blu-ray; HD-DVD; coalition; coopetition; standard war

Space Charge Measurements at the PSB

    Get PDF
The PS Booster (PSB) is an accelerator working under very high space charge during the first part of its cycle. After the change of tune, it was necessary to revisit the space charge effects to try to understand and possibly improve the situation. In addition, the Linac2 will be replaced by the Linac4 providing an H-injection in the PSB at 160 MeV. This energy is chosen to reduce by a factor 2 the space charge effect with the same beam characteristics. It was then needed to make some measurements at this energy, not only to find the limits but also to benchmark some simulation with available programs [1]

Idea Density Correlates with Prior Knowledge

    Get PDF
It is widely accepted in educational research that student’s prior knowledge influences new learning. It is easier to comprehend text and content on that particular subject because of the students prior knowledge. If the person does not have any knowledge on the subject, how can a person process the information given? The concept of idea density deals with the measurement of texts, and is a subset of conceptual density. The formal definition states “the number of propositions divided by the number of words” (Covington, 2008). The idea density of a text determines the amount of work a reader must do in order to understand it. Readers who are already familiar with a subject can comfortably process text with high idea density than a person who is new to the field. The purpose of this research is to determine whether and to what degree is idea density an indirect measure of the amount of presupposed knowledge. The authors will conduct a series of experiments and collect data. The goal is to analyze the data and determine if conceptual density has any affect on learning. Cooled beam diagnostics

    Get PDF
The specific diagnostics systems used in cooler rings will be reviewed. The hardware used and the ways in which the physical characteristics of the beam are accessed will be described. It will be also shown how to evaluate the forces that are exerted on the beam during cooling
