Rebuilding an urban empty space. The area where the Eretenio Theatre once stood near the River Retrone in Vicenza, Italy

Vicenza is an ancient city located in the Veneto region, not far from Venice, in the north-east corner of Italy. This work specifically refers to the area of the Eretenio theatre on the bank of the River Retrone. The theatre was bombed and destroyed in 1944. Intimately part of the historic center of Vicenza, this abandoned area gradually lost its functional and social identity. The idea of rebuilding that degraded place has long been the object of discussion on the part of local authorities. The Eretenio theatre area is one of the subjects recently investigated by our students at the ‘Architectural and Urban Composition 2' course taught on the master’s degree in Architectural Engineering at the University of Padua. Students were required to present project hypotheses to reconfigure the lost unity of this symbolic part of the city. The history is considered an indispensable tool to know the deep reasons of the urban structure, which can be used to control the change of functional systems (political, social and economic). The Eretenio theatre area was proposed to our students as an opportunity to suggest new ways to manage the passage from past to future in the shadow of Andrea Palladio’s architecture

Study to regenerate the degraded neighborhood of San Carlo on the northern outskirt of Padua, Italy

The San Carlo neighborhood with the church of San Carlo at its center is a degraded area in the northern outskirts of Padua, a city located near Venice in the Veneto region of north-eastern Italy. Once marked by a distinctive identity, this part of the outskirts of Padua has gradually lost its social and functional character. The idea of restoring this decaying district has long been the subject of discussion by the local authorities. The neighborhood of San Carlo is one of the subjects recently investigated by students studying the ‘Architectural and Urban Composition 2' course on the Master’s Degree in Architectural Engineering at the University of Padua. Their ideas include a green piazza park, a community center and hall, a library, study rooms for students, additional parking, open space for the weekly market

Photon molecules in atomic gases trapped near photonic crystal waveguides

Realizing systems that support robust, controlled interactions between individual photons is an exciting frontier of nonlinear optics. To this end, one approach that has emerged recently is to leverage atomic interactions to create strong and spatially non-local interactions between photons. In particular, effective interactions have been successfully created via interactions between atoms excited to Rydberg levels. Here, we investigate an alternative approach, in which atomic interactions arise via their common coupling to photonic crystal waveguides. This technique takes advantage of the ability to separately tailor the strength and range of interactions via the dispersion engineering of the structure itself, which can lead to qualitatively new types of phenomena. As an example, we discuss the formation of correlated transparency windows, in which photonic states of a certain number and shape selectively propagate through the system. Through this technique, we show in particular that one can create molecular-like potentials that lead to molecular bound states of photon pairs

Courtly Love, Stars, and Power: The Queens in Third Century Royal Couples, through Poetry and Epigraphic Texts

peer reviewedI discuss the role of women and erōs in court poetry, by focusing on the ruling pair, i.e. the couple par excellence, and arguing that a gentle, reciprocal love within the bonds of marriage is presented as a crucial value, ensuring wealth and social order as well as the continuity of the dynasty itself. Because court life is a fashionable source of models for the elite, the poetic motif of requited love also influences the ideal depiction of love outside the ruling pair. After focusing on how internal patterns of relationship between characters shape the role of the queen in Alexandrian court poetry, I turn to non-literary, epigraphic evidence, in order to show how poetic representations of royal love integrate into a wider ideological program. Although my study mainly concerns Ptolemaic ruling pairs, I discuss some epigraphic parallels from the Seleucid dynasty as well, so that some general observations can be made on early Hellenistic queenship

SigNet: A Digital Platform for Hellenistic Sealings and Archives

peer reviewedThe paper provides an overview of the SigNet Project with special attention to the implementation of a digital agenda fitting the dual purpose of promoting scientific research in the specialized disciplines of sigillography and numismatics and of bridging their gap with the broader field of cultural heritage. Focus is in particular on the role of interdisciplinary, open linked databases of big data and on the promotion of citizen science

The paper presents the concepts and methodology followed in the exhibition “Baixa in Real Time” organized by the Department of Museology - University of Lusofona, which was presented at the beginning of 3013 (March to June) in the Millennium Gallery in Lisbon and the Museum of Republic in Rio de Janeiro The exhibition was oriented towards a look at Baixa which could take into account its present time, in all its complexity. A present time, of renewed life by the repossession of spaces by diverse sectors of society, where the ancient and the modern, within the built memory or the spur of the moment sight, reencounter a spirit for every site, a personal and not transferable value, or simply a place of encounters. The technological dimension and accessibility issues are also addressed as well as the role of exhibitions in the university context but open to the general public
