    From a one-mode to a multi-mode understanding of conical intersection mediated ultrafast organic photochemical reactions

    Over the last few decades, conical intersections (CoIns) have grown from theoretical curiosities into common mechanistic features of photochemical reactions, whose function is to funnel electronically excited molecules back to their ground state in regions where the potential energy surfaces (PESs) of two electronic states become degenerate. Analogous to transition states in thermal chemistry, CoIns appear as transient structures providing a kinetic bottleneck along a reaction coordinate. However, such a bottleneck is not associated with the probability of crossing an energy barrier but rather with an excited state decay probability along a full "line" of transient structures connected by non-reactive modes, the intersection space (IS). This article will review our understanding of the factors controlling CoIn mediated ultrafast photochemical reactions, taking a physical organic chemist approach by discussing a number of case studies for small organic molecules and photoactive proteins. Such discussion will be carried out by first introducing the "standard" one-mode model based on Landau-Zener (LZ) theory to describe a reactive excited state decay event intercepting, locally, a single CoIn along a single direction, and then by providing a modern perspective based on the effects of the phase matching of multiple modes on the same local event, thus redefining and expanding the description of the excited state reaction coordinate. The direct proportionality between the slope (or velocity) along one mode and decay probability at a single CoIn is a widely applied fundamental principle that follows from the LZ model, yet it fails to provide a complete understanding of photochemical reactions whose local reaction coordinate changes along the IS. We show that in these situations, in particular by focussing on rhodopsin double bond photoisomerization, it is mandatory to consider additional molecular modes and their phase relationship approaching the IS, hence providing a key mechanistic principle of ultrafast photochemistry based on the phase matching of those modes. We anticipate that this qualitative mechanistic principle should be considered in the rational design of any ultrafast excited state process, impacting various fields of research ranging from photobiology to light-driven molecular devices

    Methodological challenges of mixed methods intervention evaluations

    This paper addresses the methodological challenges that accompany the use of a combination of research methods to evaluate complex interventions. In evaluating complex interventions, the question about effectiveness is not the only question that needs to be answered. Of equal interest are questions about acceptability, feasibility, and implementation of the intervention and the evaluation study itself. Using qualitative research in conjunction with trials enables us to address this diversity of questions. The combination of methods results in a mixed methods intervention evaluation (MMIE). In this article we demonstrate the relevance of mixed methods evaluation studies and provide case studies from health care. Methodological challenges that need our attention are, among others, choosing appropriate designs for MMIEs, determining realistic expectations of both components, and assigning adequate resources to both components. Solving these methodological issues will improve our research designs and provide further insights into complex interventions

    Investigating the effectiveness of simplified labels for safe use communication : the case of household detergents

    This study assessed the effectiveness of safety communication on the back labels of hazardous products (with regulatory and safety information as dictated by regulatory requirements), with household detergents as a test case. The potential of simplification to increase label effectiveness was evaluated by comparing the currently used labelling approach with two simplified alternatives. The labels mainly differed in terms of the amount of information and the prominence of pictograms. The generalisability of theoretical insights on the effectiveness of pictograms in safety messages to a more real-life context was tested by (a) realistic labels containing several other information elements besides the safety information and (b) target users who are knowledgeable about the product type. One thousand eight hundred (1,800) respondents participated in an online experiment and were randomly exposed to one of the labels. The positive cognitive and behavioural effects commonly attributed to pictorials could not be confirmed, but positive affective effects did emerge. Specifically, even though participants were asked to carefully read the label, they did not spend enough time to process all the content except for the most simplified label. The results did not show meaningful differences between the three labels in terms of information recall (which was poor for all executions), hazard perceptions and behavioural intentions when confronted with an accident. In contrast to this lack of differentiation in cognitive and behavioural intention effects, we did find a clear difference in the affective measure. A majority of the respondents preferred the simplified safety labels. As such, avoiding information overload, and conveying the information in an easier way by means of more prominent use of pictograms, appeared to be appreciated by consumers of household products, while it did not negatively impact label effectiveness

    Factors influencing acceptance of technology for aging in place:A systematic review

    Purpose To provide an overview of factors influencing the acceptance of electronic technologies that support aging in place by community-dwelling older adults. Since technology acceptance factors fluctuate over time, a distinction was made between factors in the pre-implementation stage and factors in the post-implementation stage. Methods A systematic review of mixed studies. Seven major scientific databases (including MEDLINE, Scopus and CINAHL) were searched. Inclusion criteria were as follows: (1) original and peer-reviewed research, (2) qualitative, quantitative or mixed methods research, (3) research in which participants are community-dwelling older adults aged 60 years or older, and (4) research aimed at investigating factors that influence the intention to use or the actual use of electronic technology for aging in place. Three researchers each read the articles and extracted factors. Results Sixteen out of 2841 articles were included. Most articles investigated acceptance of technology that enhances safety or provides social interaction. The majority of data was based on qualitative research investigating factors in the pre-implementation stage. Acceptance in this stage is influenced by 27 factors, divided into six themes: concerns regarding technology (e.g., high cost, privacy implications and usability factors); expected benefits of technology (e.g., increased safety and perceived usefulness); need for technology (e.g., perceived need and subjective health status); alternatives to technology (e.g., help by family or spouse), social influence (e.g., influence of family, friends and professional caregivers); and characteristics of older adults (e.g., desire to age in place). When comparing these results to qualitative results on post-implementation acceptance, our analysis showed that some factors are persistent while new factors also emerge. Quantitative results showed that a small number of variables have a significant influence in the pre-implementation stage. Fourteen out of the sixteen included articles did not use an existing technology acceptance framework or model. Conclusions Acceptance of technology in the pre-implementation stage is influenced by multiple factors. However, post-implementation research on technology acceptance by community-dwelling older adults is scarce and most of the factors in this review have not been tested by using quantitative methods. Further research is needed to determine if and how the factors in this review are interrelated, and how they relate to existing models of technology acceptance.
