Tatari, tautoko, tauawhi - Hei awhina tamariki ki te panui pukapuka: Some preliminary findings

    Get PDF
The Tatari, Tautoko, Tauawhi reading tutoring procedures have been adapted from the procedures known as Pause, Prompt, Praise, first developed in Mangere in 1977. The first author offered the procedures as a koha at a Special Education Service hui at Poho o Rawiri in 1991. The second author took up the koha and obtained the support of kaumatua and kuia at Hairini marae Tauranga Moana, and the support of senior Maori staff of the Special Education Service National Office to produce a Maori language video and training booklet. This began an important bicultural journey through the processes of producing instructional materials and trailing and evaluating them in ways that are biculturally appropriate. This paper reports on that journey and presents some preliminary data on the implementation of Tatari, Tautoko, Tauawhi by seven tuakana - teina pairs in a bi-lingual classroom

Bilingual behaviour checklists: initiating a student, teacher and parent partnership in behaviour management.

    Get PDF
Three bilingual (Maori and English) behavioural checklists formed part of a project designed to facilitate student, teacher and whanau collaboration in overcoming behavioural difficulties experienced by Maori students, (Hei Awhina Matua). The checklists assessed rankings by 163 students, 21 teachers and 96 whanau members of (1) contexts in which problem behaviours occur, (2) specific problem behaviours and (3) specific most valued behaviours. Data were gathered in three schools: a mainstream intermediate school with a Māori medium syndicate of three classes, a rural Kura Kaupapa Maori (Maori-controlled total immersion school) and a bilingual contributing primary school. While the three schools differed markedly in location, size, and in the proportion of Maori students enrolled, the rankings of settings and behaviours by students, teachers and whanau in each school were highly similar. The paper discusses how these data contributed to the design and development of the Hei Awhina Matua video and training manual, and provided a first step towards a collaborative student teacher and parent partnership in the management of student behaviour

The Role Of A Catalyst In The Isotopically Excited Laser Photochemistry

    Get PDF
Laser photochemistry of BCl3/H2 using catalysis was carried out experimentally. The 10.55 μm radiation from a high power (GW/cm2) TEA CO2 pulse laser was used to selectively excite the 11BCl3 molecules. Using Ti catalyst the reaction products analyzed were 10B11BH2Cl 4, 11B11BH2Cl4, and HCl, whereas those were 10B11BCl4, 11B11BCl4, and HCl when Pb metal powder was employed, i.e., 10B10BH2Cl4 and 10B10BCl4 molecules were not generated in our experiment. Moreover, it was found that the 10BCl3 concentration in the unreacted BCl3 gas increased from 20% to 37% after 360 laser pulses, but the isotopic enrichment was not obtained for the reaction products. The mechanisms for the observed catalytic laser photochemistry are proposed. © 1978 American Institute of Physics.6894233423

Implementation of a double-scanning technique for studies of the Hanle effect in Rubidium vapor

    Get PDF
We have studied the resonance fluorescence of a room-temperature rubidium vapor exited to the atomic 5P3/2 state (D2 line) by powerful single-frequency cw laser radiation (1.25 W/cm^2) in the presence of a magnetic field. In these studies, the slow, linear scanning of the laser frequency across the hyperfine transitions of the D2 line is combined with a fast linear scanning of the applied magnetic field, which allows us to record frequency-dependent Hanle resonances from all the groups of hyperfine transitions including V- and Lambda - type systems. Rate equations were used to simulate fluorescence signals for 85Rb due to circularly polarized exciting laser radiation with different mean frequency values and laser intensity values. The simulation show a dependance of the fluorescence on the magnetic field. The Doppler effect was taken into account by averaging the calculated signals over different velocity groups. Theoretical calculations give a width of the signal peak in good agreement with experiment

Probing Interchain Interactions In Emissive Blends Of Poly[2-methoxy-5- (2′-ethylhexyloxy)-p-phenylenevinylene] With Polystyrene And Poly(styrene-co-2-ethylhexyl Acrylate) By Fluorescence Spectroscopy

We present dynamic and static photoluminescence studies on polymer blends of conjugated poly[2-methoxy-5-(2′-ethylhexyloxy)-p-phenylenevinylene] (MEH-PPV) with polystyrene-co-1-pyrenyl methyl methacrylate and its copolymer poly(styrene-co-2-ethylhexyl acrylate-co-1-pyrenylmethyl methacrylate) (with 9 mol% and 19 mol% of 2-ethylhexyl acrylate units and 0.06 mol% of 1-pyrenyl). Pyrenyl-labeled polystyrene and its copolymers were synthesized by emulsion polymerization and characterized by 13C and 1H-NMR, FTIR, GPC, DSC, and UV-Vis. Spin-coating films of the blends were prepared from chloroform solutions with 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, and 5.0 wt% of MEH-PPV. The miscibility of these systems was studied by non-radiative energy transfer processes between the 1-pyrenyl moieties (the energy donor) and MEH-PPV (the energy acceptor). The relative emission intensities and the fluorescence lifetimes of the donor showed that the miscibility of MEH-PPV and the copolymers is greater than that of MEH-PPV and polystyrene and this was confirmed by epifluorescence optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. ©2006 Sociedade Brasileira de Química.17510001013Miyata, S., Nalwa, H.S., (1998) Organic Electroluminescence Materials and Devices, , Gordon and Breach: TokyoLiu, Y., Liu, M.S., Li, X.C., Jen, A.K.Y., (1998) Chem. Development of acoustically lined ejector technology for multitube jet noise suppressor nozzles by model and engine tests over a wide range of jet pressure ratios and temperatures

    Get PDF
An experimental program comprising model nozzle and full-scale engine tests was undertaken to acquire parametric data for acoustically lined ejectors applied to primary jet noise suppression. Ejector lining design technology and acoustical scaling of lined ejector configurations were the major objectives. Ground static tests were run with a J-75 turbojet engine fitted with a 37-tube, area ratio 3.3 suppressor nozzle and two lengths of ejector shroud (L/D = 1 and 2). Seven ejector lining configurations were tested over the engine pressure ratio range of 1.40 to 2.40 with corresponding jet velocities between 305 and 610 M/sec. One-fourth scale model nozzles were tested over a pressure ratio range of 1.40 to 4.0 with jet total temperatures between ambient and 1088 K. Scaling of multielement nozzle ejector configurations was also studied using a single element of the nozzle array with identical ejector lengths and lining materials. Acoustic far field and near field data together with nozzle thrust performance and jet aerodynamic flow profiles are presented

The Effect Of Dye-polymer Interactions On The Kinetics Of The Isomerization Of 4-dimethyl-aminoazobenzene And Mercury Dithizonate

    Get PDF
Thermal and photo-isomerization reactions of mercury dithizonate and 4-dimethyl-aminoazobenzene were studied in solutions and in polymer matrices. We used exponential functions to calculate the rate constants for both processes. The kinetic behavior was well described by monoexponential functions for these dyes dissolved in solvents, although bi-exponential functions are required when these dyes are dissolved in polymers. The rate constants are strongly influenced by dye/solvent and dye/polymer interactions, as well as by the aging processes of the polymer matrix. In general, the reaction is faster in more polar mediums, solvents or polymer matrices, since stabilization of different tautomers takes place. We also showed that larger molecules isomerize slowly and slower isomerization has also been observed for annealed samples. Both results are attributed to the importance of free-volumes in polymeric matrices.152253261Natansohn, A., Rochon, P., (2002) Chem.
