The ideological basis of antiscientific attitudes: Effects of authoritarianism, conservatism, religiosity, social dominance, and system justification
Serious concerns about public distrust of scientific experts and the spread of misinformation are growing in the US and elsewhere. To gauge ideological and psychological variability in attitudes toward science, we conducted an extensive analysis of public opinion data based on a nationally representative survey of U.S. adults ( N = 1,500) and a large replication sample ( N = 2,119). We estimated the unique effects of partisanship, symbolic and operational forms of political ideology, right-wing authoritarianism (RWA), social dominance orientation (SDO), and general system justification (GSJ), after adjusting for demographic factors. Multiverse analyses revealed that (a) conservatism and SDO were significant predictors of distrust of climate science in > 99.9% of model specifications, with conservatism accounting for 80% of the total variance; (b) conservatism, RWA, religiosity, (male) sex, (low) education, (low) income, and distrust of climate science were significant predictors of skepticism about science in general (vs. faith) in > 99.9% of model specifications; (c) conservatism, RWA, (low) education, and distrust of climate science were significant predictors of trust in ordinary people (over scientific experts) > 99.9% of the time; and (d) GSJ was a significant predictor of trust in scientific experts (over ordinary people) 81% of the time, after adjusting for all other demographic and ideological factors. Implications for the role of science in democratic society are discussed
A gain-coefficient switched Alexandrite laser
We report on a gain-coefficient switched Alexandrite laser. An electro-optic
modulator is used to switch between high and low gain states by making use of
the polarization dependent gain of Alexandrite. In gain-coefficient switched
mode, the laser produces 85 ns pulses with a pulse energy of 240 mJ at a

Mapping individual electromagnetic field components inside a photonic crystal
We present a method to map the absolute electromagnetic field strength inside
photonic crystals. We apply the method to map the electric field component Ez
of a two-dimensional photonic crystal slab at microwave frequencies. The slab
is placed between two mirrors to select Bloch standing waves and a
subwavelength spherical scatterer is scanned inside the resulting resonator.
The resonant Bloch frequencies shift depending on the electric field at the
position of the scatterer. To map the electric field component Ez we measure
the frequency shift in the reflection and transmission spectrum of the slab
versus the scatterer position. Very good agreement is found between
measurements and calculations without any adjustable parameters.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figure
Validation of the Dutch Freiburg mindfulness inventory in patients with medical illness
Most validation studies of the Freiburg Mindfulness Inventory (FMI) involved healthy subjects. Validation in patients who suffer from a life-threatening medical illness is needed, to investigate the FMI’s validity in medical psychology research and practice. Psychometric properties of the Dutch FMI were examined in two patient groups of two different studies: (Sample 1) cardiac patients (n = 114, M age = 56 ± 7 years, 18% women) and (Sample 2) severely fatigued cancer survivors (n = 158, M age = 50 ± 10 years, 77% women). Confirmatory factor analysis (studied only in Sample 2) provided good fit for the two-factor solution (Acceptance and Presence), while the one-factor solution provided suboptimal fit indices. Internal consistency was good for the whole scale in both samples (Sample 1 α = .827 and Sample 2 α = .851). The two-factor model showed acceptable to good internal consistency in Sample 2 (Presence: α = .823; Acceptance α = .744), but poor to acceptable in Sample 1 (Presence subscale: α = .577, Acceptance subscale: α = .791). Clinical sensitivity was supported in both samples, and construct validity (studied only in Sample 1) was acceptable. Coping with and self-management of chronic painful chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy:A qualitative study among cancer survivors
PurposePatients with chronic painful chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) may experience a negative impact of CIPN on daily life. They can use various coping (i.e., dealing with symptoms and resulting impairments in general) and self-management (i.e., practical actions to reduce symptoms) strategies to live with their limitations. This paper aimed to examine experienced helpful coping and self-management strategies of patients with chronic painful CIPN.MethodsSemi-structured interviews were conducted with twelve patients with chronic painful CIPN. We applied a hybrid deductive-inductive coding approach. ATLAS.ti was used for coding.ResultsGenerated from the data were two themes and nine codes for coping and four themes and 31 codes for self-management strategies. Coping of patients often included active strategies like planning, seeking social support, and acceptance. Additionally, patients often used passive strategies such as focusing on and venting emotions and suppressing competing activities. The most common self-management strategies were mostly passive (i.e., medication, deliberate choice of shoes, resting, sitting, and consulting healthcare professionals) but also active (i.e., exercising) strategies.ConclusionPatients exhibit a great variety of coping and self-management strategies that they perceive as helpful to deal with chronic painful CIPN. However, research has shown that certain strategies are not that helpful or even come with aversive effects. More research into the effectiveness and implementation of psychosocial interventions is needed since it may help patients adopting helping strategies. In addition, healthcare professionals need to refer patients with CIPN in a timely manner to physical therapists, occupational therapists, or rehabilitation teams to reduce or prevent (further) impairments.Implications for Cancer SurvivorsPatients can consult one of their healthcare providers in case of problems in dealing with their symptoms, to get proper guidance and possible referral.<br/
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in a large community-based population: clinical outcome and identification of risk factors for sudden cardiac death and clinical deterioration
AbstractObjectivesThis study evaluates the clinical course and identifies risk factors for sudden cardiac death (SCD) and clinical deterioration in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) in a large community-based population. Comparison was made with data from six tertiary referral and six nonreferral institutions.BackgroundHypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a disease with marked heterogeneity in clinical presentation and prognosis. Risk factors for SCD are not well defined in patients free of referral bias.MethodsBetween 1970 and 1999, 225 consecutive patients (mean age [±SD] 41±16 years) were examined and followed at yearly intervals.ResultsForty-four deaths were recorded of which 27 cases were cardiovascular. Fourteen patients died suddenly, six were successfully resuscitated, and seven patients died of congestive heart failure. The annual mortality, annual cardiac mortality, and annual mortality due to sudden death were 1.3%, 0.8%, and 0.6%, respectively. At least one New York Heart Association (NYHA) functional class deterioration was reported in 33% of the patients with a significant (≥50 mm Hg) left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) gradient in contrast to 7% without obstruction. The presence of syncope was related to SCD (p < 0.05). Younger age and more severe functional limitation distinguishes patients from in hospital-based centers from the ones in community-based centers.ConclusionsHypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a benign disease in an unselected population with a low incidence of cardiac death. Syncope was associated with a higher incidence of SCD and patients with a significant LVOT obstruction were more susceptible to clinical deterioration
A ring of instantons inducing a monopole loop
We consider the superposition of infinitely many instantons on a circle in
R^4. The construction yields a self-dual solution of the Yang-Mills equations
with action density concentrated on the ring. We show that this configuration
is reducible in which case magnetic charge can be defined in a gauge invariant
way. Indeed, we find a unit charge monopole (worldline) on the ring. This is an
analytic example of the correlation between monopoles and action/topological
density, however with infinite action. We show that both the Maximal Abelian
Gauge and the Laplacian Abelian Gauge detect the monopole, while the Polyakov
gauge does not. We discuss the implications of this configuration.Comment: 11 pages, 1 figur
Heavy Carriers and Non-Drude Optical Conductivity in MnSi
Optical properties of the weakly helimagnetic metal MnSi have been determined
in the photon energy range from 2 meV to 4.5 eV using the combination of
grazing incidence reflectance at 80 degrees (2 meV to 0.8 eV) and ellipsometry
(0.8 to 4.5 eV). As the sample is cooled below 100 K the effective mass becomes
strongly frequency dependent at low frequencies, while the scattering rate
developes a linear frequency dependence. The complex optical conductivity can
be described by the phenomenological relation \sigma(\omega,T) \propto

Readability of Dutch online patient-directed health information on breast reconstruction
Background The Netherlands and Belgium are among the top five worldwide of highest incidence in breast cancer, leading to an increase in post-mastectomy reconstruction interest. This study aims to analyze readability of Dutch-written online patient-directed information on breast reconstruction. Methods An online patient query for the term borstreconstructie was simulated using the largest search engine, Google. Content from the 10 most popular web sites from the Netherlands and Belgium was collected and formatted into plain text. Readability level assessment was performed using four available tools for the Dutch language: Accesibility.nl, Klinkende Taal, Texamen, and WizeNote, which measure readability according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Results Of the 20 websites (10 Dutch and Belgian), breast reconstruction content was mainly written in B2/C1 and exceeded the recommended B1 level. The readability tool "Klinkende Taal" was found to have the lowest average CEFR level at B2 (average 4.01, 2.40-5.00), WizeNote (average 4.57, 3.00-5.00), and Accesibility.nl (average 4.58, 3.40-5.50). Both had a CEFR level B2/C1, while Texamen scored the highest average at C1 (average 4.77, 3.60-5.25). Kiesbeter.nl, a Dutch government web site, was found to comply with the recommended B1 level on their breast reconstruction information. Conclusions Readability of online health information on breast reconstruction was generally found to be too advanced for the lay population. Therefore, it may hold benefit for patient-directed health information to be analyzed and revised in order to tailor the information to the targeted population
