    Evaluation of Labeling Strategies for Rotating Maps

    We consider the following problem of labeling points in a dynamic map that allows rotation. We are given a set of points in the plane labeled by a set of mutually disjoint labels, where each label is an axis-aligned rectangle attached with one corner to its respective point. We require that each label remains horizontally aligned during the map rotation and our goal is to find a set of mutually non-overlapping active labels for every rotation angle α[0,2π)\alpha \in [0, 2\pi) so that the number of active labels over a full map rotation of 2π\pi is maximized. We discuss and experimentally evaluate several labeling models that define additional consistency constraints on label activities in order to reduce flickering effects during monotone map rotation. We introduce three heuristic algorithms and compare them experimentally to an existing approximation algorithm and exact solutions obtained from an integer linear program. Our results show that on the one hand low flickering can be achieved at the expense of only a small reduction in the objective value, and that on the other hand the proposed heuristics achieve a high labeling quality significantly faster than the other methods.Comment: 16 pages, extended version of a SEA 2014 pape

    Burstiness predictions based on rough network traffic measurements

    To dimension network links, such that they will not become QoS bottle- necks, the peak rate on these links should be known. To measure these peaks on sufficiently small time scales, special measurement tools are needed. Such tools can be quite expensive and complex. Therefore network operators often rely on more cheap, standard tools, like MRTG, which were designed to measure average traffic rates (m) on time scales such as 5 minutes. For estimating the peak traffic rate (p), operators often use simple rules, such as p = α · m. In this paper we describe measurements that we have performed to investigate how well this rule describes the relation between peak and average traffic rate. In addition, we pro- pose some more advanced rules, and compare these to the simple rule mentioned above. The analyses of our measurements, which have been performed on differ- ent kinds of networks, show that our advanced rules more adequately describe the relation between peak and average traffic rate

    Silicon micromachined hollow microneedles for transdermal liquid transfer

    This paper presents an improved design and fabrication process [ 13 for hollow micro needles with the proper mechanical strength and sharpness to be applied for painless transdermal transfer of liquids. Tests have shown that liquids like blood are drawn into the needle by capillary forces, reducing the need for active pumping. The fabrication method allows different needle shapes like blades and pencils, is robust enough to be applied for largerscale production, and enables the development of a complete micro-TAS for e.g. blood analysis

    Immunocytokines: the long awaited therapeutic magic bullet in rheumatoid arthritis?

    Modulatory cytokines such as IL-4 and IL-10 looked promising biologicals, but suffered from poor exposure at the inflamed joints when administered via the patient-friendly subcutaneous route. Immunocytokines have now been engineered with tissue targeting potential and are a possible solution to this problem, although challenges still exist. Local inflammatory processes cause destruction of extracellular matrix (ECM) components, leading to neo-eptitopes, and/or elicit the synthesis of new ECM components. This makes ECM elements interesting targets for antibody-mediated recognition and retention, to achieve higher levels of immunocytokines at the site of therapeutic interference. The study presented by Schwager and colleagues shows that targeted delivery of IL-10 is more efficacious in experimental arthritis. Clinical studies are warranted to show whether this strategy works for all rheumatoid arthritis patients or is better for subgroups with a defined ECM phenotype. In principle, the scFv-targeting system is plastic enough to allow for personalized strategies

    Parallel single cell analysis on an integrated microfluidic platform for cell trapping, lysis and analysis

    We report here a novel and easily scalable microfluidic platform for the parallel analysis of hundreds of individual cells, with controlled single cell trapping, followed by their lysis and subsequent retrieval of the cellular content for on-chip analysis. The device consists of a main channel and an array of shallow side channels connected to the main channel via trapping structures. Cells are individually captured in dam structures by application of a negative pressure from an outlet reservoir, lyzed on site and the cellular content controllably extracted and transported in the individual side channels for on-chip analysis.\u

    Pairing correlations in the even-even A=102-130 Sn isotopes are discussed, based on the Richardson-Gaudin variables in an exact Woods-Saxon plus reduced BCS pairing framework.     Potts models in the continuum. Uniqueness and exponential decay in the restricted ensembles

    In this paper we study a continuum version of the Potts model. Particles are points in R^d, with a spin which may take S possible values, S being at least 3. Particles with different spins repel each other via a Kac pair potential. In mean field, for any inverse temperature there is a value of the chemical potential at which S+1 distinct phases coexist. For each mean field pure phase, we introduce a restricted ensemble which is defined so that the empirical particles densities are close to the mean field values. Then, in the spirit of the Dobrushin Shlosman theory, we get uniqueness and exponential decay of correlations when the range of the interaction is large enough. In a second paper, we will use such a result to implement the Pirogov-Sinai scheme proving coexistence of S+1 extremal DLR measures.Comment: 72 pages, 1 figur
