Artificial neural networks for 3D cell shape recognition from confocal images
We present a dual-stage neural network architecture for analyzing fine shape
details from microscopy recordings in 3D. The system, tested on red blood
cells, uses training data from both healthy donors and patients with a
congenital blood disease. Characteristic shape features are revealed from the
spherical harmonics spectrum of each cell and are automatically processed to
create a reproducible and unbiased shape recognition and classification for
diagnostic and theragnostic use.Comment: 17 pages, 8 figure
Optimisation of bulk carrier loading and discharge
This report summarises progress made towards the problem submitted by Rusal Aughinish at the 93rd European Study Group with Industry. Rusal Aughinish is a company that refines alumina from bauxite. The problem presented to the study group was to review the percentage of time that the company’s inner berth was occupied and how to minimise this percent- age. A number of different approaches were taken with this aim in mind. Firstly, data supplied by Rusal Aughinish was analysed. This analysis found that there is an optimal loading rate (with respect to eliminating demurrage costs) and suggested bands of optimal ship sizes. Further to these studies, two models of Rusal Aughinish’s shipping process were developed by the group: a simulation model and an analytical model. Both models were found to replicate the shipping process reasonably well and were, hence, used to study alumina output, berth occupancy and demurrage costs

Complex Odor from Plants under Attack: Herbivore's Enemies React to the Whole, Not Its Parts
Background: Insect herbivory induces plant odors that attract herbivores ’ natural enemies. Assuming this attraction emerges from individual compounds, genetic control over odor emission of crops may provide a rationale for manipulating the distribution of predators used for pest control. However, studies on odor perception in vertebrates and invertebrates suggest that olfactory information processing of mixtures results in odor percepts that are a synthetic whole and not a set of components that could function as recognizable individual attractants. Here, we ask if predators respond to herbivoreinduced attractants in odor mixtures or to odor mixture as a whole. Methodology/Principal Findings: We studied a system consisting of Lima bean, the herbivorous mite Tetranychus urticae and the predatory mite Phytoseiulus persimilis. We found that four herbivore-induced bean volatiles are not attractive in pure form while a fifth, methyl salicylate (MeSA), is. Several reduced mixtures deficient in one component compared to the full spider-mite induced blend were not attractive despite the presence of MeSA indicating that the predators cannot detect this component in these odor mixtures. A mixture of all five HIPV is most attractive, when offered together with the noninduced odor of Lima bean. Odors that elicit no response in their pure form were essential components of the attractive mixture. Conclusions/Significance: We conclude that the predatory mites perceive odors as a synthetic whole and that th
Behavioral genetics of temperament and frontal asymmetry in early childhood
Temperament has been suggested to be influenced by genetic and environmental factors. The current study examined genetic shared environmental and unique environmental factors accounting for variation in Fear, Effortful Control (EC), and Frontal Asymmetry (FA) in 4- to 6-year-old children using bivariate behavioral genetic modeling. We included a total of 214 same-sex twin pairs: 127 monozygotic (MZ) and 87 dizygotic (DZ) pairs. FA was measured during a rest electroencephalogram (EEG) recording, and Fear and EC were measured using parent report. Results show that differences between twins were best explained by genetic factors (about a quarter of the variance) and unique environmental factors (about three quarters of the variance). However, the cross-trait, within-twin correlations were not significant, implying no overlapping genetic or environmental factors on Fear and EC or on Fear and FA. Future research should try to elucidate the large role of unique environmental factors in explaining variance in these temperament-related traits
Network inference analysis identifies an APRR2-like gene linked to pigment accumulation in tomato and pepper fruits
Carotenoids represent some of the most important secondary metabolites in the human diet, and tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is a rich source of these health-promoting compounds. In this work, a novel and fruit-related regulator of pigment accumulation in tomato has been identified by artificial neural network inference analysis and its function validated in transgenic plants. A tomato fruit gene regulatory network was generated using artificial neural network inference analysis and transcription factor gene expression profiles derived from fruits sampled at various points during development and ripening. One of the transcription factor gene expression profiles with a sequence related to an Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) ARABIDOPSIS PSEUDO RESPONSE REGULATOR2-LIKE gene (APRR2-Like) was up-regulated at the breaker stage in wild-type tomato fruits and, when overexpressed in transgenic lines, increased plastid number, area, and pigment content, enhancing the levels of chlorophyll in immature unripe fruits and carotenoids in red ripe fruits. Analysis of the transcriptome of transgenic lines overexpressing the tomato APPR2-Like gene revealed up-regulation of several ripening-related genes in the overexpression lines, providing a link between the expression of this tomato gene and the ripening process. A putative ortholog of the tomato APPR2-Like gene in sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum) was associated with pigment accumulation in fruit tissues. We conclude that the function of this gene is conserved across taxa and that it encodes a protein that has an important role in ripening

Steering in computational science: mesoscale modelling and simulation
This paper outlines the benefits of computational steering for high
performance computing applications. Lattice-Boltzmann mesoscale fluid
simulations of binary and ternary amphiphilic fluids in two and three
dimensions are used to illustrate the substantial improvements which
computational steering offers in terms of resource efficiency and time to
discover new physics. We discuss details of our current steering
implementations and describe their future outlook with the advent of
computational grids.Comment: 40 pages, 11 figures. Accepted for publication in Contemporary
