Irrigation water strategies for the Buriti Vermelho watershed: towards a higher water productivity.
RESUMO: Com a necessidade de se utilizar a água de forma cada vez mais eficientemente, faz necessário melhorar a produtividade de uso da água em escala de bacia hidrográfica. Este estudo objetivou avaliar a produtividade de uso da água e a possibilidade de aumentar a área irrigada na bacia hidrográfica do Buriti Vermelho, Brasil. o modelo de Solo-Água-Atmosfera-Planta (SWAP) foi utilizado nas simulações. A bacia do Buriti Vermelho possui agricultura de sequeiro (soja e milho), e irrigada (milho, feijão e trigo). A produtividade de uso da água (CWP) foi calculada em função da lâmina total de água aplicada, que inclui a soma da irrigação e da precipitação. Avaliou-se também o período ideal para o plantio da soja, buscando-se o rendimento ótimo e a maior CWP. A CWP variou de 0,32 kg m-3, para a cultura da soja, a 1,90 kg m-3 para o trigo. Para o período estudado houve uma redução da CWP com o aumento da lâmina de irrigação. A irrigação mostrou ter grande influência no rendimento das culturas do feijão, do trigo e do milho. O rendimento ótimo e a máxima produtividade de uso da água para a soja foram observados no mês de novembro. O cenário futuro mostrou que haverá decréscimo na CWP e que será necessário aplicar mais água para se conseguir as mesmas produtividades. ABSTRACT: As water is required to be used more efficiently, the crop water productivity should be improved. The main objective of this paper was to assess both the crop water productivity and the possibility to expand irrigated land in the Buriti Vermelho experimental watershed, Brazil. Soil-Water-Atmosphere-Plant (SWAP) model was used to perform the analysis. Buriti Vermelho contains both rain fed (soybean and corn) and irrigated (corn, common beans and wheat) crops. The crop water productivity was calculated as a function of total applied water, which includes the sum of irrigation and precipitation. An additional study was performed to verify the most ideal rainfed soybean growth period. The crop water productivity varied from 0.32 kg m-3 for soybeans to 1.90 kg m-3 for wheat. The crop water productivity decreased when the irrigation amount increased. Irrigation showed to have a big influence on the crop yield of common beans, wheat and rainfed corn, caused by a combination of low rainfall and low actual evapotranspiration values with higher irrigation requirements. The results showed November as being the most optimal growth period for soybeans. This month showed both the optimal yield as maximum crop water productivity. The future forecasts a decrease in crop water productivity, what means more water will be needed to reach the same amount of crop yield
Anomalous crossover between thermal and shot noise in macroscopic diffusive conductors
We predict the existence of an anomalous crossover between thermal and shot
noise in macroscopic diffusive conductors. We first show that, besides thermal
noise, these systems may also exhibit shot noise due to fluctuations of the
total number of carriers in the system. Then we show that at increasing
currents the crossover between the two noise behaviors is anomalous, in the
sense that the low frequency current spectral density displays a region with a
superlinear dependence on the current up to a cubic law. The anomaly is due to
the non-trivial coupling in the presence of the long range Coulomb interaction
among the three time scales relevant to the phenomenon, namely, diffusion,
transit and dielectric relaxation time.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Femtosecond Laser-Induced Emission of Coherent Terahertz Pulses from Ruthenium Thin Films
We demonstrate emission of electromagnetic pulses with frequencies in the terahertz (THz) range from ruthenium thin films through a second-order nonlinear optical process. Ruthenium deposited on different substrates showed different THz emission properties. We provide evidence that for Ru on glass above a certain power threshold, laser-induced oxidation occurs, resulting in an increased slope of the linear dependence of the THz electric field amplitude on pump power. The THz electric field is mainly polarized parallel to the sample surface, pointing in the same direction everywhere. In contrast to Ru on glass, the electric field amplitude of the THz pulses emitted by Ru on sapphire and on CaF2 shows a simple single linear dependence on pump power, and it is polarized orthogonal to the sample surface. In this case, thermal oxidation in an oven enhances the emission and introduces an additional polarization component along the sample surface. This component also points in the same direction everywhere on the surface, similar to the as-deposited Ru on glass. Although the precise THz generation mechanism remains an open question, our results show a strong correlation between the emission strength and the degree of oxidation. Furthermore, the results highlight the importance of the interfaces, i.e., both the choice of the substrate and the chemical composition of the top surface in THz emission experiments. Knowledge of the state of the sample surface is therefore crucial for the interpretation of THz emission experiments from (nonmagnetic) metal surfaces.</p
Cenozoic inversion of the Weald-Boulonnais and the Dover Strait: new data
The Boulonnais is a former marine gulf superimposed on a zone of tectonic inversion, which was already excavated at least at the early Middle Eocene. New sedimentalogical and paleopedological data discover within the Boulonnais and fresh seismic sections able now to better understand the process of inversion step by step. The initial breaching probably took place in the late Eocene. The Dover Strait was probably open during the Lutetian, a part of the Oligocene and of the Late Neogene. Oligocene and Pliocene faunal assemblages are identical on both sides of the Strait. It was closed again for tectonic and eustatic reasons in the early Quaternary and reopen lately from Last Interglacial. This reopening is related with the evolution of the Western Channel and of its paleovalley system. This inversion of the Variscan front accommodates most of the shortening induced by the Pyrenean Orogen on the Western border of the European plate. The inversion of the Dover Strait region is almost synchronic with those of other basins of the Channel and North Sea areas. Tectonic, geomorphologic and climatic implications of this dynamic are discussed within the Western European context
Shot Noise in Linear Macroscopic Resistors
We report on a direct experimental evidence of shot noise in a linear
macroscopic resistor. The origin of the shot noise comes from the fluctuation
of the total number of charge carriers inside the resistor associated with
their diffusive motion under the condition that the dielectric relaxation time
becomes longer than the dynamic transit time. Present results show that neither
potential barriers nor the absence of inelastic scattering are necessary to
observe shot noise in electronic devices.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure
Effects of rapamycin and curcumin on inflammation and oxidative stress in vitro and in vivo - in search of potential anti-epileptogenic strategies for temporal lobe epilepsy
Background: Previous studies in various rodent epilepsy models have suggested that mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) inhibition with rapamycin has anti-epileptogenic potential. Since treatment with rapamycin produces unwanted side effects, there is growing interest to study alternatives to rapamycin as anti-epileptogenic drugs. Therefore, we investigated curcumin, the main component of the natural spice turmeric. Curcumin is known to have anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects and has been reported to inhibit the mTOR pathway. These properties make it a potential anti-epileptogenic compound and an alternative for rapamycin. Methods: To study the anti-epileptogenic potential of curcumin compared to rapamycin, we first studied the effects of both compounds on mTOR activation, inflammation, and oxidative stress in vitro, using cell cultures of human fetal astrocytes and the neuronal cell line SH-SY5Y. Next, we investigated the effects of rapamycin and intracerebrally applied curcumin on status epilepticus (SE)-induced inflammation and oxidative stress in hippocampal tissue, during early stages of epileptogenesis in the post-electrical SE rat model for temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). Results: Rapamycin, but not curcumin, suppressed mTOR activation in cultured astrocytes. Instead, curcumin suppressed the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway. Quantitative real-time PCR analysis revealed that curcumin, but not rapamycin, reduced the levels of inflammatory markers IL-6 and COX-2 in cultured astrocytes that were challenged with IL-1β. In SH-SY5Y cells, curcumin reduced reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, suggesting anti-oxidant effects. In the post-SE rat model, however, treatment with rapamycin or curcumin did not suppress the expression of inflammatory and oxidative stress markers 1week after SE. Conclusions: These results indicate anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties of curcumin, but not rapamycin, in vitro. Intracerebrally applied curcumin modified the MAPK pathway in vivo at 1week after SE but failed to produce anti-inflammatory or anti-oxidant effects. Future studies should be directed to increasing the bioavailability of curcumin (or related compounds) in the brain to assess its anti-epileptogenic potential in vivo

The Neuropsychological Profiles of Mild Alzheimer's Disease and Questionable Dementia as Compared to Age-Related Cognitive Decline
Test scores from a comprehensive neuropsychological battery administered to 1602 subjects consisting of 1347 subjects with probable Alzheimer's disease (AD), 100 subjects with questionable dementia (QD) and 155 non-demented elderly control subjects were cross-sectionally analyzed. Subjects with probable AD were categorized as mild (n = 244), moderate (n = 480), severe (n = 376), and very severe (n = 247) according to modified mini mental status exam (mMMSE) scores. Mean scores on individual neuropsychological tests are provided for each group of subjects. Stratified random sampling was performed to select a sample of mild AD subjects who were matched in age and education to non-demented elderly controls, and analyses focused on the performance of QD subjects and mild AD subjects, whose scores were compared to those of the elderly control subjects. Selected scores were organized by cognitive domain and logistic regressions were used to determine the domains and individual tests within each that were most predictive of group status. Results suggested a profile of scores associated with QD and mild AD including impaired recall of verbal information for both groups.
